New Xbox Live features
Monday, February 23rd, 2004 - 11:00pm
From an article at CNET about new features being planned for Xbox Live.
Quote:
There has been speculation within the industry that Microsoft may not include a hard drive in the next version of the Xbox console, in favor of network-based storage that would reduce the console's physical size and cost.
I still can't believe they'd forgo a HD for some kind of upload/download storage. What about those people who play their Xbox without any kind of internet access in the home?

Other enhancements in the works, Microsoft said, include the ability for game publishers or group of players to create competitions for specific games...
Hope it's better than their XNS sports system. ![]()

Microsoft has been strongly hinting that they want custody of the data of the entire planet. They are looking to use this type of system for the PC''s replacement. I personally think that not only they, but anyone who would allow them to store all their data, is on crack. I would switch to anything else, even if it meant never playing a game again.
I just don''t see going backwards and not including a hard drive.

Well, in a more global bandwidth use is good for my stock sort of way I support this idea... ok I don''t really support the idea, but I would be willing to meet them part way. I would like to be able to load my saved game at friends house for example.
Fundamentally a large drive, the larger the better, lends it''s self to being a true network entertainment center appliance hub so I don''t really put any stock into this being their goal. Until we all have fiber to our door and have something way WAY beyond cable/DSL sh*t upload speeds a comprehensive remote storage concept will never get off the ground. Just to be clear I support 10Gig drops for all of us soon as possible
. If I can have that I will be willing to talk about giving them back their hardrive...maybe.

Did Samurai Jack ever get back to the past?
I''ll second that. The XBOX is great, but I''d rather help the WINE team bug hunt FlashMX than be part of this. And that''s saying something.
I was just talking about this today. My thoughts on this is that they may give you options on hard drives as well or the ability to upgrade and have multiple hard drives...kinda like an over glorified memory card... 2nd idea is they may make the hard drive apart of a pvr kit, just like the dvd kit on the first xbox...

Never happen. You all have me on record as saying this - If the next Xbox doesn''t have a harddrive (or something capable of storing gigs of data) I will eat my own shoe.
Hell, if the PS3 doesn''t have one I''ll eat my other shoe.
Someone will have to get you new shoes!
Someone will have to get you new shoes!
So, if Ridlin eats his other shoe, someone will have to get him new shoes?

Couldnt he just buy new shoes with the money he saved from buying a console without a hard drive?

I''ll videotape it and have Certis post it up on the site for everyone to watch.
I mean it!
I''d also like to reserve the right to use ketchup - should my bet backfire on me.
I''ll hold you to that.

Memory card sales = cash for Sony and lost revenue for MS.

Being fangoriously devoured by a gelatinous monster.
One of the reasons I chose xbox, over PS, is for the very fact that I hate memory sticks. Cash for MS and lost revenue for Sony.
So there!

Broadband internet access required for a console is a bad idea. How many people want a network cable running through their living room or to spend an extra $50+ on a wireless adapter?
By the time the next xbox comes out, broadband will be available over the water pipes at 10 gigabytes a second. Your refrigerator will order groceries for you over the internet and your Jetsons car will fold up into a brief case. Mr. Spacely will always be a prick though. Still, there would be no excuse for not having a HDD. If they try to pull that crap, I''ll get a PS3.

I''d be very disappointed if it didn''t come with at least a small HD or other storage device. Forcing people to purchase (multiple) cards to store saved game data is ridiculous at this point in time.

Even though in the intro they say this new information bolsters the idea that the Xbox will ditch the HD, the article actually does the opposit, imho. It looks like M-Systems is making more of a memory stick, than a HD. Where does it say they''re making a HD and not another memory stick?
I read somewhere that DOOM3 for the xbox is going to utilize the HD more than any game before it. They''re gonna store textures on it.
nah, just a provisional puritan town!
Look, I agree with you that it could just be a newer bigger flash stick, but I''m just pointing to articles. How''s that for a back up?
To elaborate, I think it would be de-evolutionary for MS to give up the HD in XB2. I think devs are going to want a bigger footprint for the next generation of games not a smaller one. sh*t, they could release the same box with a better CPU and more ram and I''d be happy.
The only point the article made that was really anti-HD was near the end when they said the HD made the hacks more desirable and somewhat easier. (edit - they actually said it was a ''liability'' in hacked systems

Though I quoted your link to the article Eezy, none of my comments was directed towards you. It just seemed to me that the article contradicts itself. You didn''t argue one way or the other, so I don''t see how you thought it was directed at you.
I can see MS implementing a good system that makes use of flash drives instead of a regular HDD.
My question is how can they have backwards compatability without a hard drive?
They won''t have backwards compatibility, Nvidia won''t cooperate to do it.
