Things to do in Portland OR?

I will be in Portland OR for the Public Library Associationconference from March 23-27 and I wondered what there is to do in Portland in the evenings when the exciting conference is done. I am not a night club or titty bar type (anymore) so any suggestions of more laid back stuff?

Anyone from out there? I wouldn't mind meeting GWJers for a beer some night if anyone does live in the area.

Here's a list from not too long ago. I'd skip 23rd street right now, lots of construction and bad times have hurt that a bit. Hawthorne district still rocks though. And I still recommend Pok Pok:)

I'm not in town that week, but some S&T action needs to happen.

If you have time, also go to Bunk Sandwiches.
Outstanding.

edit: other things i'm not sure are in that thread:

Bijou Cafe for breakfast.

Stumptown Coffee next door to Bijou, killer espresso and mochas. I don't like mochas and theirs make my toes curl. SO good.

Por Que No on Hawthorne or Mississippi, great tacos.

If you're downtown and want some great lunch, check out Ping. Run by the Pok Pok guys.

Evening entertainment: Ground Kontrol. Arcade games and beer. Say no more.

Double edit: It's probably obvious, but get yourself to Powell's. Also, check out the area around Powell's, there's a great Comic Book shop close by (cant remember the name), a Jackpot Records, as well as Billy Galaxy (they're all in the same building).

triple threat edit:
And like Gorilla says, Voodoo Donuts. Downtown location is open 24hours now.

4th times the charm: Guardian Games is a good walk from the convention center. They have pretty much everything.

Voodoo Doughnuts is in Portland and is good.

The link to that previous thread has lots of good stuff... I'll throw out this stuff even though it may be redundant.

Definitely hit up one of the Stumptown Coffee shops and get some of their regular french pressed coffee. It will blow your mind. They started me on the path towards coffee snobbery (not sure that ends up being a good thing because now I don't like many roasters). There are several locations in the Portland area, one location in Seattle and one in New York now I believe.

Pambiche has good Cuban food and is quite a fun little hole in the wall place.

There's quite a bit of stuff to do on both the west and east side of the river (the convention center is on the east side of the river). To be honest, just walking around downtown on the west side is an easy way to find stuff to do. There are several record shops and bookstores along Burnside (road).

As far as good places to grab those beer things, they're all over the place (lots of good brewpubs listed in that previous thread). There are a lot of more trendy/upscale bars/restaurants in the Pearl District which can be fun. I usually end up going to more hole in the wall/dive bar kind of places as they are cheaper and have more character (My Father's Place used to be one of my favorites).

There are quite a few music venues scattered throughout so you could probably pick up a show somewhere if you were bored.

One of the best things about Portland is that it is a smallish big city. Massive amounts of things to do and places to go without being overwhelming in scale. From the convention center you could walk just about anywhere (although you might be taking a bit of a hike to get to some places).

The Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall is a beautiful building where the Oregon Symphony plays (they also have other shows there too - I've seen Sigur Ros there twice). I checked really quick to see if there were going to be any performances while you are in Portland, but it doesn't look like there are. However in checking, I noticed that they're doing Cats at the Keller Auditorium on all the days you'll be in Portland. Tickets start at 23.50. You could probably just pick a ticket up at the box office if you felt like going to a performance. The calendar is here and the place is right next to the Schnitz.

It'd be worth it to go have a look at the Schnitz even if there isn't a performance. You can probably check it out during the day.

Speaking of: Why hasn't there been an S & T at Ground Kontrol? And why is Druidpeak in Germany? These questions need answers.

S/T anyone? I was just thinking we were overdue. I should be available pretty much any evening during 23-27.

Alright that is a great list, probably more than I will actually get done on the few evenings I have.

I have heard public transportation is great and I hope it is because I really don't want to pay for a bunch of cabs!

I'm going to try to do all of them this weekend, so i think you'll have plenty of time:)

The Max train is your buddy, he'll see you downtown, and i think it's still free all the way out to the convention center and lloyd center.

Make sure you hit up Voodoo on Saturday. They only make the bacon maple bars on the weekend, and in limited batches, so your best bet is to stop by on Saturday morning.

MAX + streetcar gets you around the west side quite well, if you are willing to walk for a few blocks to get to specific places.

Also, bring a jacket with a hood. Natives don't use umbrellas, and we will think less of you if you do.

The only time my wife carries something like that is when it's sunny. That's how we do it in the NW.

If you love cheeseburgers, you must go to the Brunchbox food stand on SW 3rd and Washington. Outstanding. During my last trip to Portland, I went back there several times. Just wonderful greasy burgers.

Also, Powell's Books is a must see for any fan of books.

This. It is a MUST. I would live there if they would let me, but alas, my home is in Washington, so I can't live there and attend work at the same time.

I hated it. The whole freaking time it looked like the inside of the Denver airport!

Seriously though, I never got there. I got into Denver at 10pm on Tuesday, around 12:30 they just canceled the flight (and all flights out of Denver). I finally talked to a customer service agent around 4am and was told the soonest they could get me to Portland was Friday! 3 whole freaking days! I said that wouldn't help much since the conference ended on Saturday. He very kindly apologized and told me he could get me back to Cedar Rapids Wednesday morning!

So my great trip ended up being less that 24 hours spent in the Denver airport!

Everyone who did make it said it was great in Portland and the conference was great too so I was pretty bummed.
