If I can pilot a viper in real-time joystick-driven space combat, then I'll frak a frakkin' toaster if I have to just to play it!

[edit]Browser-based?! Meh.

I don't need an MMO to do that - just give me a good SP game.

Check this BSG mod of Freelancer.

That might scratch the Viper pilot itch.

Looks like I might have to reinstall Freelancer!

I want to be NotASecretCylon007, a mild-mannered deck chief who is definitely not a cylon.

Seeing as nobody else cares, I will just have a conversation with myself

I haven't actually played it yet, but I did create a character and did the first 2 tutorials. My first impressions are: Wow, this looks pretty damn good to be sitting in a browser window!

I've only heard a few things about this. Is basically just a space shooter with BSG ships or is there any actual story or levelling/upgrade paths?

I saw browser in a description and stopped caring there. They wont be able to pull off what i want with that. That and i was never big on the IP even as a kid nor liked the reboot.

It is basically a space shooter, but there is upgrade path. I still have not played further, but there are upgrades per ship class, plus upgrades to a different class of ship (including capital ships I believe) There are also skill upgrades like guns, missiles, scanning, even mining.

It certainly isn't the in-depth treatment of the IP I would have wanted, but it does look a lot more promising than I gave it credit for. The Unity engine looks like it can do some amazing stuff, the tech demos on the site you download the plugin from look pretty good.

As an aside, I was really big on the original BSG as a kid and was not happy about them rebooting it (What! Starbuck is a woman! WTF!). Then I (tried) to watch the original and watched the reboot, and I wind up in a place where I am happy it happened, with maybe an exception for the ending

I started a Cylon on the Scorpia server. It's certainly very good for a browser game. It's still beta and buggy, but the intro stuff is pretty fun. The combat is an interesting mix of Eve and a standard space shooter. There are some electronic warfare options and what looks to be some good strategy elements for grouping. Great for lunch breaks at the very least. Your character gets XP for levels and skills, and you also buy/sell/loot goods and ship equipment. There's a wiki that's slowly filling itself out, too.

Just a quick reminder that this game is out and f2p. I played the tutorial and a couple of other missions and agree with Mix.

I asked my wife the same thing last night. She replied with "stop being a moron and wash the damned dishes" -- Paleocon asking his wife about zombies

Btw, another option for viper piloting goodness is Beyond the Red Line, a Freespace 2 mod.

A Cigar, much like Scotch and Monogamy, is an acquired taste.

Hmm. I've been seeing adverts for this on tv, and I'm tempted. I tried Eve Online, but the learning curve for pretty much every aspect of the game was just too darned steep. This on the other hand looks a little more approachable.

That said, I don't want an experience that's too 'lite'. Is anyone able to offer a comparison?

Closer to Privateer or Wing Commander in complexity, I'd say. Something like Wing Commander, but you can customize your gear and skills in more detail, but not nearly Eve detail.

Thanks, Mixolyde

I might have a dabble then.
