March 8 - March 12

My first inclination was to remove the PC release of Assassin's Creed 2 entirely from The Week Ahead -- to essentially have it stricken from the record. So full is my distaste for the new set of pointless flaming hoops that the misanthropes over at Ubisoft's have erected for us felonious PC users to jump through. But, to deny you the opportunity to not buy Assassin's Creed 2, to attempt to take the decision making process from you, is no better. So, below and here you will find mention of the game's release.

Please do not buy it. And, for the love of God, don't pirate it either.

Besides, there are better things to talk of this week. Even though my weekend saw what is likely the final Red Ring of Death for my launch 360, I find myself rolling with the whole thing pretty well. After all, I'm finally settling into Heavy Rain and Final Fantasy XIII on a PlayStation system just seems right. And, that is my pick for Game of the Week.

Also of note is the expansion to Dawn of War II titled Chaos Rising. DoW2 was one of those games that I always intended to go back and play more of. The right way to describe my time with that game is to say that I dabbled, and this may be the perfect excuse to go back and flesh out my experience.

I was actually seriously considering getting the Xbox 360 FFXIII pack. $399 for a 250 GB 360, FFXIII and 2 controllers seem like a reasonable deal for replacing my system.

Or they could, I don't know, buy it on one of the consoles like most people already did?

Yes, I do think that is exactly what the goal of this all is.

Shall we just scrap the PC platform entirely while we're at it though, or should we keep a hex-based wargame or two around?

The point is simply this: I have a voice and I'm exercising it. It's the only recourse I have, and it's a pretty meager one at that, but if your choice is buy AC2 on the PC or not at all, I'd recommend not at all.

has there been any comparisons between the ps3 and 360 versions of FF13? Even if it's as small as the diff in hard drive installs and what the impact on loading times might be could be enough to sway me to one or the other when getting this game.

Thanks

For someone like me, who has only a hazy memory of any sort of FF game (IV was the one with the Avatars, right?), does FF13 do anything different (above say, Lost Odyssey or Star Ocean) that will allow me to actually enjoy a JRPG should non-fans of JRPG-style games stay far, far away??

That's certainly the direction I see Ubisoft going in and they might go there even faster thanks to the DRM debacle. Heck, if not for Spore and the Bioware folks, I could easily see EA doing the same thing.

Instead of repeating myself, just read what I said over here. And there's a couple links in the FFXIII thread that have comparisons you can look at.

Oh, and installs for both systems aren't mandatory. It's close to 16 gigs on the 360. I couldn't find numbers on the PS3 install size.

From what I've read from IGN (oh how dare me go to another gaming website that doesn't have the wit and maturity of GWJ...sometime I just need to be a teenager again) they suggested that you go with the PS3 version.

That and the XBox 360 version comes with 3 DVDs (unsubstantiated, I heard this from somewhere...). Imagine if you will that Square kept that "whole game's worth of content" that they cut in the 360 version, now it's about 6 DVDs. A whole season of House or Psych doesn't span 6 DVDs...although FFXIII would last a lot longer on 3 DVDs...remind me again when there was a series that spanned oh about 45 hours(?) (or for me 96 if FFXII will dictate how long I will play FFXIII).

Anyway I agree with Elysium, FF on the PS is just right. I mean in Japan it's a PS3 exclusive. Now if you want to read a review on FFXIII, I'd suggest going to Joystiq. So anyway I have my pre-order from Amazon (got it for $10 thanks to Bioshock 2...one of the many joys that Bioshock 2 gave me) and I'll be getting it on release day (for free none the less....how did that happen?).

So one question, should I go and pick up the Gold Edition of Resident Evil 5? I'm not a major fan of the series mainly because I have a past fear of it...(one terrifying night playing Resident Evil 3 in middle school really put me off on the series). I'm now older, wiser, and I have a hell of a punch (in case someone wants to pull scare with me again) should I give the RE series a second chance?

From what I hear, the 360 goes to some heavily compressed video for the cutscenes, while the PS3 either does them in-engine or from video that has no compression artifacts. During battles, supposedly, they look about the same.
