Great documentary films
Friday, February 26th, 2010 - 12:51pm
What exceptional documentary films are out there for me to see.
I've just recently seen 'A Letter to Zachary' which is.... memorable and there are others I've seen in the past that, although they stick with me, I don't necessarily remember the names off. Anyone seen an brilliant or quirky documentaries (I remember a long time ago seeing one about people who run hotels in America that was really good) that I can track down?

Relax. It's Higgledy - Elysium

Good Grew Tired of Us.
That might make you cry a bit. This was one of those documentaries that didn't feel like there was a director. I felt like they did an exceptional job of letting the men and the images speak for themselves.
Jesus Camp if you want to be scared sh*tless.
The Yes Men. Very political, but fun.

The Thin Blue Line: So damn good, it got the case re-opened and the wrongly accused man freed. Also just a real thrill to watch.

Off the top of my head:
Garlic is as good as ten mothers
Wild Wheels
Gates of Heaven
Salesman
Always for Pleasure
Vernon, Florida
Shadow Boxing
In Heaven there is no Beer
Fast, Cheap, and out of control
I'll think of more later
[Edit: Jesus Camp and Thin Blue line are indeed great]

Nice.
Man on Wire - High wire act across the Twin Towers and a blissfully charismatic character? Yes, please. The best documentary I've seen in the last 10 years.
Young@Heart - Senior Citizens singing Talking Heads tracks? Rock.
Murderball - Paraplegic wheelchair rugby by inspiring spirits.
No End In Sight - A scathing accusation from DC's top brass about our inept and botched insertion in Iraq. Utterly chilling.
Spellbound - A fun romp covering participants from around the country registered in the National Spelling Bee.
EDIT:
Thanks, Switchbreak!

No End In Sight was good. I also liked Frontline's Bush's War.

I even bought the DVD after streaming it from Netflix.
Steam: [GWJ]MeatMan
Lots of good suggestions above.
Project Grizzly - Man is attacked by grizzly, builds bear-proof suit, is repeatedly hit with heavy things (not a very well-done documentary, given what they have to work with, but it's funny and you can watch it through that link for free).
Overnight - A study in hubris.

It's chilling.

Blue Vinyl: Enjoy killing us all with your house.
Oh, these are too dry? Perhaps you'd enjoy some Genghis Blues: Tuvan throat singing with an American twist.
Or perhaps punk rock is more of your style then here's Joe Strummer: The Future is Unwritten or The Filth and the Fury: Both are personal and moving.
Still too dry? Here's Darkon FTW

Oh wow. Lots for me to add to my rental queue. Thanks.
I really enjoyed Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room

Relax. It's Higgledy - Elysium
Bigger, Stronger, Faster - About steroid use in competitive sport.
Deliver Us from Evil - Catholic priest, you get the idea.
Waltz with Bashir - Animated-Surrealist-Docudrama-Thing about the Sabra and Shatila massacre in Lebanon.
The King of Kong - I'm just going to assume you've already seen this.
Though no a movie (it is epic) A Series Called the World at war, possible one of the best documentaries ever created. It covers WW2 from the lead up till the cold war.
Some Kind Of Monster is really very good, pretty much regardless of whether you like Metallica or not.
Dogtown and Z-boys is super interesting even if you're not into skateboarding.
Anvil is close to being my all-time favorite documentary. It touched me very deeply.
However, Grizzly Man takes the crown. I was just blown away by its moviemaking genius. The way there are more and more layers to the topic and how Herzog himself is present in the movie, it's spellbinding. The opening scene totally disarmed me.

Good flick. On the same note, I'd add.
Persepolis - An animated autobiography of an Iranian woman who comes of age during the Iranian Revolution of the late 70's.

The Union is a very in-depth look at the history, research, and business of marijuana.
Super High Me is also about marijuana, but it focuses more on comedian Doug Benson as he first goes 30 days without marijuana and then goes 30 days high as a kite. A little informative, but mostly just funny.
This Film Is Not Yet Rated takes a look at the MPAA and how it can and has hurt movies that have expressed ideas the MPAA doesn't like.
Outrage is from the same director. It's about closeted politicians who lobby for anti-gay legislation. Haven't seen it yet, but it looks good.

My Architect - If you are into architecture, it's great. I'm not sure if it's so great if you aren't since I am. You get to see some great work as the son of an architect goes to visit various buildings attributed to his father's name and talks to anyone he can find. So it's got the benefit of being about someone's search for knowing his father and you get to look at really cool buildings along the way.

Who Killed the Electric Car - We watched this in my AP Environmental Science class. It's interesting and might be a bit biased, but still good to watch and see how Ford really hurt themselves early on in the green movement.

At the time of its release it was very controversial and not screened anywhere in the South.

I actually just got back from a documentary film festival in Columbia, MO called True/False. It's always a good time but this year I got a chance to see Restrepo. This film was intense and heartbreaking. It details a year spent embedded with an Army unit in the Korengal Valley of Afghanistan. I think just about everyone in the theater cried by the end of it. It won the Grand Jury for Documentaries at Sundance, so check it out as soon as you can.
