SupCom 2 Catch-All
Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010 - 4:49pm
This is scheduled for release Tuesday March 2rd.

Here is a long youtube video. If you are interested in this game it is well worth your time.

In Supreme Commander 2, players will experience brutal battles on a massive scale! Players will wage war by creating enormous customizable armies and experimental war machines that can change the balance of power at any given moment. Take the role of one of the three enigmatic commanders, each representing a unique faction with a rich story that brings a new level of emotional connection to the RTS genre, or fight the battle online. Where do your loyalties lie?
A deep and powerful story - element adds a personal, human aspect to a storyline previously focused on warring factions and the politics that fuel them. The single player campaign features three character-driven storylines set 25 years after the events of Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance
Command enormous armies made up of customizable land, air and naval units. Each of the three diverse factions – The United Earth Federation (UEF), the Cybran Nation and the Illuminate – have been completely redesigned from the original game, with many units.
Experimental units - returning with new designs and greatly enhanced looks….and some new tricks that can be unlocked through research
New Supreme Commander Gameplay Experience - players now have the ability to research new technologies and units and deploy them instantly on the battlefield, allowing them to upgrade a base-level tank to a high-powered, multi-barreled, AA-sporting monster by the end of a given game.
Strategic Mode UI - the redesigned UI that is faster, takes up less screen real-estate and gives better player feedback
New rendering technology that allows us to create visually spectacular environments
Steam has it for 10% off if you pre-order.
Anyone else interested in this?

I've forgotten this game exists more times than I can count.

I loved the first one.
I will get this one for sure.
Wow, so soon. Will pick it up on sale someday, unless I give in.

I'm interested, but the fact that this game has been running on radio silence, no buzz or PR, kinda has me worried. Also, it is going to console too. I hope that doesn't mean a lobotomized PC version.

This is what is keeping me from pre-ordering it. The vid I linked to makes it look like that is not the case though.

Yeah that's what I am concerned about as well but I will wait and see what people say.

My wallet has to stay in my car when I get home. Like everyone I'm worried they dumbed it down to fit into the XBOX360 but at the same time its freaking SUPCOM! Tasty robots crushing trees and frying each other with fricken laser beams attached to their heads!
Good news is that it is on steam which makes it even more tempting, also there is LAN play which means I can play it at my parties..

Tempest says: "A team hat doe snot communicate and talk to each other about what the next move will be is going to lose."
Pharacon, the first game was also on the 360.
Chris Taylor has said that they are trying to make it quicker to get into the action due to customer feedback. Also, I think he is interested in expanding the player base due to lackluster sales of the first title. I never really got into the first one but this one has me slightly interested, partially b/c we are RTS drought.
If you are planning on buying another game soon Amazon's deal is much better then steams with a $15 game credit.

If they sped the game up further even from Forged Alliance then they may just get me for this one.
FA was already an improvement over vanilla Supcom. If games moved just a little faster yet playing this could take some of the sting out of not being in the Starcraft 2 beta.

I pre-ordered this game last night and am looking forward to it quite a bit. A few of my friends from college still play multiplayer Forged Alliance now and again, and we're all waiting for Tuesday so we can give this a whirl.
If anyone else wants to give multiplayer a spin as well let me know.
Steam
What? Don't have $300 to buy a beta key off eBay?
I liked SupCom. I never got the expansion, but that's because I realized that my enjoyment of the type of rts that SupCom is no longer appeals to me.
That said, I can totally be suckered into buying SupCom2 again, but it'll only be through a super sale. I am still interested in people's reactions and I like watching the game, I just no longer like playing this type of rts.

There are no keys. They're linked to the new Battle.net account system. So.. you know, the only way you can sell your access to the beta is selling your WoW account and every other Blizzard game you own too.
I've spent the last bit reading about SupCom 2 and I admit I'm warming toward a purchase.

Not to derail too much here, but I was referring to this.

I've just received PR that there's a demo out on Steam now. Single player only, it weighs in at 1.6GBs.
I heard that they were keeping Elysium in the ICU not because he needed intensive care, but because they needed to be careful of his intensity. - Wordsmythe
The demo's definitely there on the store now but I can't get it to download.
*edit*
Yeah. It doesn't matter whether I try to install it with the shortcut from the regular website or from inside the steam client. It won't add to my games list or start the download. It just keeps refreshing the Supcom 2 game page.

Restart steam and keep refreshing the store, mine is working and about 2/3 done.
Mine finished downloading, impressions later tonight.
Steam
It's more SupCom! The way units automatically group when built is nice, and those groups show up on the overlay when you zoom out. It runs a whole load better than SC1 did.
So far a big resounding meh from me. They went to a "pay up front with your resources, if you can't afford it you can't build it" approach to the economy, and the TA/Supcom economy was absolutely my favorite thing about the titles. I'll have to see what I think about it after a bit more time.
The demo is only the first two campaign missions, with the limited tech tree and one dimensional enemy AI that unfortunately entails, maybe skirmish mode will woo me over.
Steam
Every thing about this demo feels worse then the first game. It's uglier, smaller, the economy *sucks*, the pathfinding is a joke and the units are very slow to respond to orders.
Gas Powered Games fails again.
My days of not taking you seriously have certainly come to a middle.

Sinatar I'm really hoping you're wrong, just because Supcom was such a promising game that just needed a few more tweaks and improvements to make it the king of its genre.
Unfortunately I'm afraid they've gone and looked at Demigod,Starcraft, and Dawn of War, and decided that the close and personal click-fest was the wave of the future. Less features, less complexity, more 'Experimentals'...
The only thing at this point that would get me to buy the game is strong modder support. If they lock out new maps and new units I'm just going to go away and be sad in corner for a while
Less QQ more pew pew!
Nah I'm with him completely.
In the second level you capture static experimental factories which endlessly produce fatboys that follow a set path to the enemy base, and you need to protect them. It's basically a super-simple Demigod level.
I've got other complaints too, but I'll wait to see what other people say, maybe try Forged Alliance a bit to make sure my glasses aren't too rose-tinted.
Steam
The voice over work is awful... not Men of War level, but pretty darn bad. Disappointed over all, I enjoyed the first game.
I tried the demo, hitting the tutorial because I felt like a refresher was in order. Started out liking it, but when I tried a campaign mission, it felt wrong.. somehow. Pretty underwhelming. I'm thinking the only reason I actually liked it at first is because I wanted an RTS.
Oh well.

Well, the voice work was pretty bad in the original Supreme Commander, too.
Played the demo a bit. SupCom 2 almost seems redesigned from scratch, gameplay-wise. Different economy, research, upgrades, units. Weird.

The one good thing I can say about the demo: I'm glad they released it before the game -- saved me $50.

As usual, the Eurogamer preview is interesting and matches my demo-playing experience.
What's in the water at Gas Powered Games? First Space Siege, now this?

I am probably going to get it. I tend to like most games Chris Taylor makes. I think what would take this game to the next level is having a regular group of people to play semi-competitively. I have been playing Sins of a Solar Empire every Saturday with GWJers and it has kept the life in the game. We should try to do something similar.

Bah, I wasn't planning on buying this right away, but given these comments, I think I'm going to miss it altogether now. I felt like the in/out economy balancing gameplay was really the heart and soul of Sup Com - with that removed and the experimentals (by the sound of things) made less special, this loses a lot of its draw for me. Might give the demo a crack at some point though, just to check. Might have to go and have another look at the original now, I wonder if this will spark a resurgence in balancing/fix mods for it? That would be nice.

After watching that long video in the OP I think that the weaker experimentals are more a function of the demo being of the first two levels of the game. It seems like in the decades since the earlier game the Tier 1 and 2 units have been obsoleted. I think the starting tier of units are supposed to represent tier 3 units from the last game. The experimentals you see from the old game (Megalith, Fatboy) are embarrassingly weaker, but in watching the video there seems to be another tier of larger experimentals above that.
