Games X-Copy (for legal backup copies)

I've been using DVD X-COPY XPRESS from 321 Studios for several months now with great results, and now they've come out with a version for PC games called GAMES X-COPY: http://www.dvdxcopy.com/games.asp

Basically, the program will let you copy your games onto CDs or DVDs or virtual drives. The neat part about being able to copy onto DVDs is that you can put several games, or games with many CDs, on one disc.

Of course, you're only supposed to be using it to make backup copies of games you legally own. The potential for abuse is definitely there. Several groups have been trying to sue 321 over DVD X-COPY, but have not succeeded in stopping the company from selling it so far. I wonder how long it will take before the games industry files suit...

I haven't bought the software yet - I'm waiting to hear if it actually works in the next few months. Sure, there are lots of free virtual drive/copying programs out there, but this looks much easier to use.

So, does everybody think this is legit software or just another thinly veiled form of piracy?

Sounds very legit to me. Of course, it will also be used to pirate games.

I personally have been VERY happy with Alcohol 120. It''s got a free trial if you want to check it out. If you''re looking for something free but not as friendly, you can check out Daemon Tools.

EDIT: Oh yeah, last I heard the company that makes the XCopy stuff is being sued, but what''s new.

Essentially, tools vs. use, which one do you outlaw?

I think putting several games on one DVD would be awesome though, my 200+ CDs sitting around annoy me to no end.

What debate? Guns are evil and should be taken from everybody. End of discussion.

What size house do you live in Pyro that some cds sitting around is a physical space issue.

I didn''t say it was a space issue. It''s annoying. It''s like the other night, I got an IM and a friend of mine wanted to play a quick game of Warcraft 3. I had to remove the NOCD crack to update, so I had to go digging for the CD. It took me a good couple of minutes of searching through all my crap when I should have been able to just click on the icon and play. Then there''s losing CDs, or scratching them. What I''d really like is a service that applies NOCD cracks to all my games, replaces the original binary to patch and then reapplies the new NOCD crack. I''d be in heaven.

Unless they are virtual, and then they are okay, right?

That''s really what interested me more than anything else. It would be great if I could put several of my games on one DVD, so I don''t have to go searching around for the original CDs all the time. It would also be very handy for laptop gaming while traveling; the less crap I have to lug around, the better.

I''ve got VirtualDrive 7 on the cheap and am already thinking about upgrading. I suspect SecuRom updates will drive the need as NWN and WC3 don''t work with VD7. But I love not having to put discs (even that one ""play"" disc) into my tempermental drive.

Just messing with you man! From the other thread where I was complaining about the dearth of DVD releases and someone said ""how small a house do you have"".

Ah! I couldn''t remember which side of the DVD argument you were on. Oops

To play DA at least a little bit, doesn''t that make the problem of losing/damaging CDs that much worse, that you''d lose a couple of games at a time? Or would you still have the originals around somewhere, meaning that you''d need to store the originals + your copies?

It''d be easier to keep track of because there''d be fewer of them.
