January 11 - January 15

January holds full the promise of some excellent new years gaming, but probably not for this week. With relatively little competition, Army of Two: The 40th Day gets a perfunctory and default nod as game of the week.

It will not, however, actually be my game of the week. I'm still happily ensconced in the offerings of last year, and have taken a renewed interest in Borderlands. Yes, this was a game with a rich foundation of cooperative play, but to be honest it is painfully underrated as a fine single player game. My travails about the desolate realm of Pandora has been a one-man trek, and I don't really feel like I've missed much as a result.

Also on my play list this week, in honor of the ongoing NFL playoffs, is going back to try out the new Ultimate Team additions to Madden, with the caveat that I recognize the add-on as the dirty money grab it is and I absolutely will not spend a dime to get marquee players who can only be used for 10 games. Do you hear that, EA? You can take my time, but you'll never take my Benjamins!

Hmpf! I would've picked Sands of Destruction just because of the awesomely generic title.

Borderlands is so fun as a group, but you really have to find 3 other people within about 5 levels otherwise the lowest guy will just get slaughtered and have to hang back all the time. The good thing is that they will begin to catch up to the higher guys, as the lower player gets the majority of the experience that gets divided up. Its just makes for fun player stories, its the kind of game where you can play and carry a conversation, because its just not that overwelming except for a few spots.

What are you talking about? That cover art has me at least 10 times as excited. So, after I do some maths in my head, hmmmm, yup, that means my interest still remains at zero. Nada. Zilch.

(Btw, I don't think the spoiler tags work for images, just text.)

I'm waiting for a rhythm game that scores you on your ability to sing and dance with a rockband mike and DDR dancepad. With Natal on the way, the game could even give you feedback on your Jazz Fingers. Recreate Rent, the Thriller video, and the Pussy Cat Dolls on your xbox 360!!!

But what would we name such a creation?

EA seem to be doing just fine taking your benjamins each year when they basically patch their sportsgames and release them , adding one to the year... I already felt bad about Tiger Woods 10 for the Wii since I already own '07 for the 360, but some folks just keep falling for it every year.

Nothing for me this week btw and there probably won't be for quite a while. Now where did I put my Arkham Asylum copy?

+1

I couldn't disagree more with a certain other GWJ co-founder who called it overrated. I think it's a great game as both multiplayer and single player.

I just played this, and it's one of those games where you keep at one puzzle for 30m. A good candidate for the next gameplay>graphics debate. I love the music as well.

Some links for the lazy, so there's one less excuse for not playing it

At $15/£9 it's a little steep for the full version, which makes me feel a bit stingy if I'm honest.

After 15 hours of single player I tried out the multi player this weekend with some randoms. It wasn't as fun as single player because I enjoy screwing around and exploring the world, where with the groups we were just blasting our way from mission to mission with barely enough time to read the mission or turn in text. It may be weak, but I felt like I was missing out on the story. I happily went back to the single player knowing I was not missing anything with coop.

Also, did I mention VYPER DRIVE!!!?

Sean,

I have only played Borderlands single player, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Glad I wasn't the only one. I even got the Island of Dr. Ned (which was very cool), and i never buy expansions.

Everyone,

About the ending, did I miss something? (spoiler).

Spoiler:
I'm not sure what happened. I think I got to the vault, and I fought this huge cool monster (who could lamely be destroyed by hiding behind a stone pillar and shooting the tentacle that it was grabbing it with). Then it died and spit out a bunch of lame stuff, and then... nothing. There was no vault? I was expecting a cool room full of awesome alien tech: shields, weapons, upgrades, etc. Did I miss it? I didn't quite catch what the vision lady said or the scientist either.
Did everyone have the same experience?

We're all plants now...

I've been an anti-EA Sports guy for a long time, but they have really improved their library of games by a significant amount over the last few years. Even Madden is a significant improvement. But NHL 10, TW 10, and Fight Round 4 are all excellent releases.

I do think some of EA's DLC stategies for their sports titles are misguided, at best. But as a sports gamer, I think the job done by Peter Moore has been outstanding. He took a division that deserved the kind of comments you made, and cranked out some of the best sports games ever. I'm actually looking forward to EA getting baseball back in a couple of years.

Steam sounds like a fun game! Look for the best deals, enjoy the thrill of finding them and then consuming till your philtrum bleeds! Special purchases give you trophies (in your mind), and share your accomplishments with your Steam friends for added fun!

On that note... EA Expects Worse Fiscal 2010, New "Innovative" Madden 11

Quote:
Electronic Arts announced today that it's going to have another tough fiscal year, having a worse FY 2010 than previously planned. But CEO John Riccitiello was upbeat on the company's 2011, which features "an innovative and new take on Madden."

I wonder if Elysium will swear not to buy yet another Madden game before eventually buying that one. Maybe he'll realize the futility and welcome this "innovative" iteration of the game with open arms (and wallet).

Glad to see you finally came around on single player Borderlands.

I paused in that one long enough to finish Batman: Arkham Asylum (which I did last night). Tonight, I return to Pandora to take out Sledge and whatever else the game wants to throw at me.

I've got a mod that only works if you're level 25, and I've got six levels to go.
