I am an idiot...no really...

Just dawned on me... I need my head examined.
Case in point..
I've now had my car in for oil changes, new tires, inspection etc.. what? 4-5 times last year?
I've now not had a physical checkup in over 5 years.. and I'm 33..
Talked about screwed up.

What''s wrong with that? I''ve lived in Baltimore for three years and I don''t even know who I would go to for medical needs out here. Lived in Ohio for five years before that - went to the doctor twice, once for a drug test for a job, second because of an animal bite.
It could be that our bodies are built much better than your car ...

When the doctor starts topping off fluids or replacing limbs, then you may have a point. Until then, at 33 there''s not a lot of reason to be going to the doctor unless you already know something is wrong with you.

I have a physical checkup every year. I''m not paranoid or anything , but should I ever get some type of cancer, I''d rather know about it in the early stadium. And going to my doc once a year is totally worth the effort considering the consequences. Heh, just two months ago a brother of a friend of mine was diagnosed to have lung cancer. Fist-sized. 27 years old and he hasn''t smoked cigarettes or anything like that. It was found during a standard checkup and while the docs didn''t seem very optimistic at first it looks like the chemotherapy might have helped it.
Also, having worked in the surgery section of a hospital for about one year has sensitized me. I got to see all kinds of things every day and many of them could have been dealt with a lot better had these people visited a doctor regularly.
Damn you Spunior and your harsh realities!
I''m in the same boat as you Gameguru same age and haven''t been to a Dr''s in a long time, just haven''t really ever felt the need.
Spun: Stupid/serious question, wouldn''t you feel a tumor like that inside you ?
End of line
Look guys, speaking from experience, get your asses over to the doctor.
I''m 32, and I just found out, after a 3-4 year lapse in going to the doctor that I have something like 200+ cholesterol, and 350+ triglycerides, basically off the chart as far as heart attack precusors go.
Maybe I''ve added 10-15 (or more) years on my life by attacking this now, before I end up in the emergency room.

Thanks guys you motivated me
I''m making an appointment now

I''m on meds that need to be refilled every year, so I always get the basics checked out. Then again, things usually happen to me that I end up going in anyway.

I need to get a check up.
Im 33 as well and havent had a physical for 7+ years.

Yeah, checkups are a good thing. I don''t speak from the same experience that mateo does but I''ll add something in.
My mother hadn''t had a checkup for about two years before she went in a few months ago. In one fell swoop they found the dreaded ""Lump"" and found out that she was in the early stages of Diabetes.
The lump was, happily, pre-emptively removed and she''s on a completely new diet to deal with the Diabetes. But finding all that out in one fell swoop is a wake-up call, if anything.

I''m with Guru and Fang. 33 and not a physical for years. When stuff comes up I''m on it though. I had a tetanus shot last spring after opening up my hand.

All this science I don't understand. It's just my job five days a week.
In some cases you will, in some cases you probably won''t. It depends on the type of cancer and, of course, the part of the body that is affected. A carcinoma that has the size of a marble or bigger isn''t something that pops up within one day, it''s growing slowly (weeks and months) and therefore the change happening within your body may not be that notable. And if has affected something like the colon region one probably wouldn''t notice it too soon since it''s not like some knot you could feel.
I''d like to elaborate some more but my English is hitting its limits a lot faster in the case of medical terms and the like.
Dammit, I haven''t been to the doctor in about 10 years and I''m 27. Guess I''d better go. The last time I tried to make an appt was a few years back when I was deathly ill with the flu. The doctor''s office told me they couldn''t fit me in for two weeks. My response: ""I''ll either be well or dead by then. Thanks for nothing."" Click. Goddamned HMO''s.

Colonoscopy? No thank you, just give me the chemo.

X-Raying is still better than nothing at all. Physical checkup doesn''t necessarily mean that you''re going to get a camera shoved in.
Question: have you ever gone through chemo or lived with someone who had to? It''s a physically incredibly exhausting process. It''s more than swallowing some pills and losing one''s hair. Sometimes you''ll feel like crap all through the day, and often you won''t have enough condition for any activity that takes longer than 30 minutes. (And I''m not even talking about sports here.) And that''s just two of the side effects.
Apart from being physically exhausting, it also is psychology exhausting. Not only for you, probably even more so for your family and friends.
I will probably get my first colonoscopy later this year. My family history seems to tell me it should be done.
I have already had a catheter inserted for bladder and prostate inspection. I will have nightmares of that experience for years to come.

Vector, how old are you? I''m pretty sure Pyro, Ulairi and I are all around 22-24.
I''m 26, and still quite convinced of my own immortality. It''s starting to get to my wife (""Go see a doctor!"" ""Get a checkup!"" ""Splint that leg!"" ""Have that eye replaced!""), but quite honestly, I don''t have a lot of faith in modern medicine. Last time I went to a doctor, it was a walk-in clinic, and I could barely drive myself there after 3 days off work. (Turned out it was strep.)
If I can''t walk, can''t see or can''t pee without pain, then I''ll go to a doctor. Before that? Let it go for a couple of days, and see how I feel then.

Stop right there!! That was your problem. Don''t base modern medicine on some jackass at a walk-in clinic. The ""doctors"" at the clinics are average at best.

Actually, the doc I talked to at the clinic seemed fine (and what I had wasn''t mysterious or earth-shattering). It''s not that I don''t like doctors, or even have a particularly bad opinion of them. It''s more a general distaste for the way many people seem to view modern medicine. It''s like people aren''t allowed to have problems any more - at the first sign of a possible something wrong, it''s off to the doctor to get a prescription. I realize that not everybody (not even most people) are like this, but there are enough of them that I actively don''t want to emulate them, to the point of probably not seeing doctors when I should.
Add to that the fact that there are medicines and procedures out there for things that (in my mind) don''t even need to exist - 180 different brands of medicated face cleanser, the Atkins diet, and don''t even get me started on liposuction - and I''m left with an overall desire to stay away from medicine as a whole unless I''m seriously non-functional. Kinda like at Cub Camp, where the outhouses were nasty enough that we all just went for a week without using ''em.

*edit* no, wait... 26? Gah; I hate calculating my age. Yeah, 26, I turn 27 this year.
...what? don''t look at me like that, I typically don''t care enough about age to even remember my own. I wouldn''t even remember my girlfriend''s if she hadn''t just gone through the ""turning 30"" crisis last year.
I didn''t see what the big deal was; heck, she could pass for 25 if she wanted, and again, age isn''t that big a deal unless someone''s not legal.
I know what you mean, I can''t remember whether I''m 22 or 23 half the time. I think I''m 23.

Bunch of young pups, aren''t ya?
Get yourself to the doc anyway. Might save yourself some trouble in the long run.
heh.. hmm.. age... i think i had to memorize my fiancee''s birthday and that bit of knowledge slipped right out... 26 i believe.
I haven''t been to a doctor in a couple years.. and haven''t had a physical in quite a bit longer.. I really should have one soon. Unfortunately motivation is quite difficult to get... however at least unlike GG I''m consistant in my inability to get things done.. my registration and inspection for my care is over a month overdue too. I really need to get around to doing this. I really am a responsible adult.. really.. like almost some of the time even.
Man. This string gives me a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach, which I can now imagine decaying as I sit here.
I''m trying to find a new primary care phys. after being unemployed for more than a year and a half.
I called numbers from the list supplied with my new health care, but have been having a hard time finding a doc taking on new patients.
I was speaking with the receptionist, nice lady, for one doctor. She took some of my information, then stopped and asked me, ""You DO know this is an OB/GYN office, right?""
""Well,"" I said. ""No. I did not know that. I guess it''s better to find out this way, isn''t it?""
I have yet to find a doctor. But I really want one. Really.
I know my cholestorol is something like 260. And someone mentioned something about Triglicerides...? Something like that.
Sounds like the kind of thing I should know about, and yet...
"Is that your blood?"
"Some of it, yeah."
