Darksiders Catch-all

This game seems destined to be lost in the pack of Bayonetta, Dante's Inferno, and God of War III, but it sounds like it could be really good. Game Informer posted their review and the game sound like it's a Zelda clone with God of War combat. Then there is this (I put it in a spoiler tag because it mentions some gameplay stuff that people might think is spoilerish, though I don't. Nothing plot related):

Quote:
Spoiler:
For one level, Darksiders doesn’t hump God of War or Zelda’s leg. It instead shifts its admiration of great games to the most unlikely of candidates: Portal. Yes, War wields the portal gun. And yes, if you fire it once, it makes a blue doorway. Fire it again to create an orange exit. As strange of a fit as it may be, Vigil makes it work well with the context of the game. Some of the game’s greatest moments are tied to this device.

All of the familiar mechanics and designs are handled with care, almost making me think that the Zelda, Portal, and God of War teams were involved with Darksiders’ creation. From the complexity of the dungeon designs to the finesse of combat, Vigil shows us that it is capable of much more than imitation – it can twist decade-old ideas into new experiences, and make every battle a sweat-inducing affair.

Bayonetta seems too crazy for me. Like a brawler version of a shmup. Dante's Inferno will likely offend my sense of good taste. It looks like I'll have to keep an eye of Darksiders to get maybe get my fill of beat'em up action.

I thought GameTrailers did a pretty good preview of it.

I like Joe Madureira's style. His Rogue is hot as sh*t, and his Sabretooth suitably savage. And I like the idea of a game like Zelda that's not, you know, Zelda. At the very least, it should all look neat.

I think it's only 360 and PS3 actually. I can't find a firm release date for the PC version.

Scott Morton, the composer, is an old Internet buddy of mine. He's a talented guy. He was Iron Lore's staff composer until they closed up shop, and he wrote all the music for Titan Quest and Immortal Throne. I'm looking forward to the game just so I can check out his tunes.

Darkstalkers looks very good gameplay wise from all the gameplay videos I've seen. I was nervous at first that a new studio could pull it off but it seems they have. True they are taking the best parts from numerous games including Metroid but they are making it work. Bayonetta while crazy fun seems to be missing heart. Anyone who has played Devil May Cry 1 on PS2 knows what I mean.

I don't want to come down too hard on this game (because I come down hard on almost every game and I don't know much about it), but the first impression I got when I watched the trailer was, "Look how cool my World of Warcraft character looks." There also seems to be a disconnect between the main character and the game space, like the character is more cartoony than the world he's in.

I saw some Metroid Prime in that trailer, too - more than Zelda.

I didn't once think about WoW, but the cartoon aspect is most likely because the art design was done by a comic book artist. If anything I see way more Spawn than WoW. Each to his own.

Since day one for me. The game hits all the right notes for me. I love Zelda, Metroid, and God of War. I like the setting, art, and the sound seems at least solid. I don't care for their official trailers but I doubt that has a bearing on the game's quality.

Wasn't announced for it and no word since. Biggest disappointment since I'm a PC gamer. I'll find some way to play though.

I read a short preview of this title a few months back in Game Informer, thought it sounded interesting. I'll probably wait a bit to see some impressions, definitely keeping an eye out for it.

I'm stopping by Gamestop to trade in Dragon Age and preorder Darksiders. I have DA on the pc and I'm done with the console version, so it's allowed.

I'll post up thoughts next week.

Has anyone heard if there will be a demo for this? I'm definitely interested, but for my tastes it looks like it might be too much God of War and not enough Legend of Zelda.

Well, from the Play Magazine review (not something I would cite as a review of note otherwise) talks about his play time. He says he logged 31 hours (part of which is screenshots and other time wasting things reviewers do, plus he kinda loved the game), but according to the game he spent less than 5 hours total in actual battle.

It's a jack of all trades, master of none, so it's certainly not going to have as much Zelda as some would like. Buy 3d Dot Game Heroes for that.

Anyway, no I haven't heard about a demo, which is exactly what the game probably should have to generate a little more buzz. Then again, this entire forum seems to hate Bayonetta after playing the demo.

So, Gamestop is giving an extra 25% on any games you trade in towards your preorder of Darksiders. That was nice to find out.

Eurogamer's review is up. It continually sounds like the combat is a bit of a letdown in that it doesn't continue to develop while the puzzles and dungeons do. I can live with that.

What you said reminds me of Shadow Complex. A great game that doesn't have great combat.

I preordered it. Had some games I want to get rid of so I took the 25% bonus. This game went from being off my radar to me really excited to play it in a few weeks.

I am keeping an eye on this one, but like Vrikk I'm waiting to see what you all think about it.

I've been waiting for a game that will give me the God of War experience without having to support some of the content decisions that the God of War development team made. This one sounds like it's not that game, but it still sounds interesting.

I really don't like Zelda games, though. Never could muster the patience for them.

The reviews are solid across the board, it looks fun and I like the art style and setting.

I may just pick this up on my next pay day.

Looks like it's getting good reviews. The art style still rubs me the wrong way but if it's as good as Eurogamer claims I might need to get over that.

I'll wait on a demo or a massive sale - Bayonetta sold me with the demo, but wife aggro remains a huge possibility if I pick it up - just fell in rhythm with the combat and thought it was awesome, sex appeal or not - I rather wish it didn't aim to be quite so flamboyant, then I could potentially purchase it.

So again, I'll wait on a Darksiders demo.

There will be no demo, unless something has changed in the past two weeks.

It makes sense seeing as this is their first game. They want to focus on that. Of course, that doesn't make it better for those who want a demo.

Edit: Oh, and I am actually going to leave early today because I'm not feeling well, so I should have impressions up by this evening. Honestly the only reason I haven't left work year is because Gamestop isn't open yet. Well, and if I get this damn year end review thing done I won't have it hanging over my head. Anyway . . .
