Weight Loss Group - 2011 Edition (New Goodjers Welcome)

Pages

So, I'm hitting 30 this year have finally reached a point where I'm fed up with being overweight, lazy, and unmotivated. I have a gym membership that has been collecting dust, exercise equipment at home that hasn't been touched, and a kitchen and work cabinet full of junk. It's time for a change and I'm 100% motivated and focused on getting in shape no matter what it takes. I can't live like I've been living anymore. I've started making small lifestyle changes to eat better, live better, and most importantly lose weight and will hit the ground running by the start of the new year.

I imagine there are other Goodjers that may be in a similar situation and I'd like to know if anyone is interested in making a committment to make similar changes in their life. One of the most important things to have when attempting to make changes is support and I figure a bunch of us could get together and post our progress here, lean on one another when we have rough patches, and share tips, ideas, recipes, etc. to keep one another on track and push each other. We could even have a little friendly competition to see who loses the most and if people aren't embarassed we could do before and after pics but of course this would be purely optional. If enough people join up and depending on hardcore people are, I could get a page set up on one of the weight loss sites and we could keep maintain stats there. If not, we could keep it all within the tread and that would be fine.

EDIT: AnimeJ created a nice spreadsheet in GoogleDocs to track progress and I'll also be adding the changes below. Please post any progress updates in the thread and update the spreadsheet accordingly.

I've been hitting the gym ~5 times a week for about a month now, and I'm working on improving my diet as well. I'm not sure if I'll be losing weight or just redistributing it into muscle, but either would be a welcome change at this point, and I'm up for anything that keeps me honest and motivated.

I won't be doing a weight loss challenge, but I have been away from exercise for a few months and will be starting up again after New Year's. I would be happy to post my stuff here as I work myself back into shape.

I'm up for it. Myself and several of my co-workers are interested in doing one at work as well. So, hopefully motivation from multiple sources will help.

I'd say flip that around if your main goal is weight loss, work that hard on diet first and you'll lose the pounds, hitting the gym and still stuffing your face will be much less effective unless you practically live at the gym and are training like an athlete.

I've lost almost 70 pounds since August. YOU GUYS NEED TO CATCH UP.

What I'd like to do is have everyone post their current weight, goal weight, and target timeframe. Then, everyone can post a few times a month to give an update on where they're at and I'll update the first post accordingly. I added mine.

If you guys are interesting in tracking your progress online and accessing tools, check out the 50 Million Pound Challenge website. It's a quick, free registration and you can start using it right away. It's helping to keep me motivated and engaged when I'm not working out.

That's definitely a great start! Have you been tracking your weight at all during that time? What type of diet changes did you make?

No worries on getting in on the challenge but definitely stick around and keep us posted on how your doing. Post your weight/goal/goal date when you get a chance.

Good to hear. Are you guys using a tool or site to keep track of everyone's progress or just doing it more casually? You can set up a team page on the site I mentioned above if you're interested.

2010 will bring big changes in my weight, and I would love to join this, but I am afraid I may be cheating as I am having Lapband surgery in February. But my diet will have to change, and I will still have to excersise, so count me in!

I dropped abut 30 kilos (roughly 70 pounds) in the last few months, Good luck with it guys, my next step will be trying p90.

I dropped all my weight with a simple change of eating patterns. Not dieting, just cuttingcarbs, increaing proteins, especially omega 3's, and taing daily vitamin supplements.

Best mental image I've been given to help you avoid the bad processed foods is to think ofthem as 'Pre chewed food'

Because all the goodness has already been taken out of it.

Good Luck all.

Yeah, point taken. They're both high priorities, that's for sure. The reason I say I'm not sure if I'll be losing weight, though, is that I don't weigh all that much for my height (6'4", BMI well within Healthy range) - it's just that it's not the healthy, fit kind of weight, residing mostly around my midsection. If I gain weight, but look and feel healthier, then I'm fine with that outcome.

So far I've lost about 5 pounds; I was teetering right around 2 bills. The main diet change, I am ashamed to say, was cutting back on fast and processed foods. I'm 27 and I've been eating like I was still 17. Go figure I'd get out of shape eating Del Taco three or four (or five, or...) times a week, right? Making a few fresh, raw salads per week is working out well so far, and I like having a lot of fresh vegetables for flavor reasons as well. Switching all my dairy intake to reduced-fat and fat-free was a snap; I barely even notice a difference. I'm already vegetarian, so cutting out meat is already part of the bargain. Frozen faux-meat patties are invaluable protein, but I have to read packaging carefully; some of them (chicken patties usually) are more carb than protein, making them nigh-worthless nutritionally for me.

My major goal here isn't to lose some specific number of pounds, but I might as well start by trying to go back to my high school weight. After all, that's when my backside was its tightest, which is really what I'm after here. That and abs so firm you could grate cheese on 'em!

Bunch of skinny bastards. I don't want to hear anyone 200lbs crying about being overweight unless they are three freaking feet tall.

And I'm not being snarky for snarkiness sake. Sitting at 265 lbs, I'm looking for some good motivation to kick me in my considerable backside. I've always enjoyed group efforts, but was instantly deflated to see the participants so far are starting out at weights I'd likely kill to get down to. Guess I'll hold out until a similar thread is started for angry fat people.

Oh wow, I'm not overweight? Thank goodness, what a relief. So next time I catch someone looking at my spare tire, I'll just helpfully inform them that, despite evidence to the contrary, I am in fact not overweight.

Just because we feel we have work to do doesn't mean we're crying about it. I think you should work with us, skinny bastards or no. The more people join in, even if some of them have wimpier goals than others, the more motivated we'll all be. But that's just my two cents.

I feel for ya man, I am hovering just over 300 right now (put on a few pounds since August when I was 300, mostly because I've been drinking soda to stay awake when my schedule went nuts that extra 3000 C a week for a few months adds up), and that is after losing 70 pounds.

My best recommendations:

  • avoid sodas *all of them, even the diet ones (besides tasting nasty they are not really any better for you.)
  • Try to add more green vegetables to your diet, they are fairly filling and pretty low on calories.
  • If you are absolutely dying for some chips/ice cream/whatever have some, but only a small amount (a single serving of ice cream or chips is usually under 200 calories, not exactly diet breaking when snuck in every few days).
  • Diets are suggestions, not a list of commandments. The occasionally splurge may set you back a day, but it doesn't mean that you should just give up on the diet. Most of the time the crazy cravings are your bodies way of telling you what you aren't getting enough of in your current diet.
  • Measure *everything* for several months on your diet, portion creep is a Female Doggo
  • Premeasure many of your portions for "treats", I find I tend to eat a lot less potato chips when I have them measured out into 1 oz portions rather than eating from the bag. It also helps to establish how many calories you will be eating that day, and to be able to plan when to eat if you do this for everything.
  • I highly recommend livestrong or some other sort of food tracking program, especially early on when you have no clue how many calories are in a given item, most will also show you where your calories are coming from
  • Set smaller goals for weight loss, Sure that goal of 100 pounds is great, but many people get overwhelmed when they still have 90 pounds to go a month in.
  • Don't be unreasonable about your weight loss schedule, seriously 2 pounds a week is lot, you lose more than that consistently you are probably doing something wrong (admittedly us fatties can usually do more as we've got a lot of fat to lose)

I know where he's coming from on that front, though. I'm going to be taking part in this, but having done Weight Watchers a number of times, I know this from experience: having someone who's saying "I'm overweight", and says they need to lose 15 lbs. in order to be at their goal weight can be disheartening to hear when you know you have to lose 5+ times as much weight to be anywhere near where you want to be. (Also doesn't help when you're the only guy in a room full of women who snipe at you because you lost 10 lbs. in the first week, when they're lighter to begin with and women have a harder time losing weight than men in general.)

It's not intended to be a slam on you, per se, it's more a "I really, truly wish I had that problem." Seeing your goal number being 100+ lbs. away is really hard on the ego.

Anyhow, speaking of ego smackdowns:

Starting (12/20/09): 330 lbs.
Current (12/20/09): 330 lbs.
Goal: 215 lbs.
Goal Date: 5/1/11
Progess so far: 0 lbs.

Again, I'm not trying to be mean. Body image is a very, very subjective thing. You see yourself as needing work, whereas I may in fact consider you to be a shining example of all that is man seeing as to how my spare tire now has a spare tire.

I look at it as such, I need to drop a good 60 or 70 pounds. It's hard to stay motivated when the majority of your support group can get 10% closer to their ultimate goal via a vigorous sh*t. However, I am happy to see some of my fellow big boys are playing too.

I'm not going to come in on one side or the other of the 'which side has it harder' debate. I will say that workouts and dieting do not get easier as you get into better shape. As you're able to handle more (stricter dieting, more demanding workouts) you also have to do more, so that those who look like they are in great shape also feel as bad/sore/underfed as those who are struggling to walk up some stairs.

I will say that, imo, it's best not to make numbers and weight your only means of measuring progress. Unless you're trying to make weight for a combat sport, numbers are only a signpost, and often a misleading one.

This is simply a matter of perspective is everything. I'm in the same boat as some other folks around here. I'm 6ft and weigh in anywhere between 215 and 220. Am I overweight? Absolutely. That's not simply my perspective on the matter either; my waist is up around 37 or 38 inches. That's not exactly tiny, and if I was in the kind of shape I'd like to be, it'd be anywhere from 3-6 inches smaller than it is currently.

All in all, I'm of the opinion that this thread should be full of positive reinforcement for folks putting the effort forward to better themselves, regardless of how much they're trying to lose.

So, with that in mind, good luck, you magnificent Goodjers. Work hard, play hard, and enjoy getting the results you're looking for.

caustic77 wrote:

I took this to mean you were angry. As such it seemed a bit misplaced to me, because I'm not really sure why I would deserve your anger. I apologize for responding negatively, and I hope you don't let my douchebaggery get in the way of your joining in.

Rubb Ed wrote:

No doubt. But so much greater the satisfaction as the numbers tick ever closer to that goal.

Agreed. But unless we can come up with a fitness benchmark (treadmill, elevation X, speed Y, thirty minutes; or something equivalent) it makes a good number to post in a forum.

AnimeJ wrote:

I hope it will be. My intent is to have people to commiserate with and cheer on. Hell, I'll say it again: I'm probably not going to reach my goal weight. I'm here because if I put the numbers down, people will check on me, and I'll feel like I have to keep going - whether I'm making "progress" in pounds or not, I'll be making myself healthier and improving my stamina.

I'm missing a closing smiley on that one, aren't I? So...

AnimeJ wrote:

Why not join in? If there's a shape you want to be in, we'd love to cheer you on to it

Eh, I'm pretty bad about stuff like this. I've made pretty much all the changes I'm going to in the way of diet; the only thing I'm really going to do is add exercise, and well, I'm a bit lazy on that front

I have plans to work on cutting back a couple inches at least, but my major priority isn't so much weight loss, or even getting rid of my waist line. My big priority right now is a sub 8 minute mile for the first time in about 4 years

Ed Rubb? Who dat?

Rubb Ed wrote:

Ed Rubb? Who dat? :)

My bad! Does diet and exercise cure dyslexia?

As for the caustic77's comment, the fact is we're all overweight to some degree and the goal of the thread is to form a support group of sorts to accomplish weight loss together. At 5'10, 200lbs., I have a small frame but high percent of body fat (mostly stomach and caboose). My BMI is very high and I'm nearly obese for my size on some weight charts. The extra 25lbs that I'm carrying around is affecting me in a number of negative ways and it's time to shed it for good!

With that said, I'm glad to see so many people interested. I'd like to keep this thread very active and always on the first page so we can draw in as many people as possible, especially with huge Xmas feasts and heavy New Years drinking looming around the corner. Evil, evil holidays! On top of that, we're all gamers by nature so the hours sitting on the couch drinking and eating puts us further in the hole in terms of losing weight and also staying active. One of things I decided to so was pick up EA Active and mix in an hour of working out with this along with my normal play. I'm heard a lot of great things about it and I'll be sure to post once I start using it regularily.

I updated the original post with gbuchold and Rubb Ed stats. I'd like to get everyone else on there so post em when you can. Also, let's all try to recruit other Goodjers if possible. The more the merrier!

I really need to get back to the gym. I'm 160-165, 5'11", but I really hate the flab on my stomach. I just don't have any drive to.

The 50 million pounds program they have is really stunning. They even have meal plans, which is very nice. I think I might look into it.

@elewis: You don't need 15 months to lose 30 pounds. C'mon.

I don't have a scale here, but I'll try to confirm my weight soon. My goals are going to be to gain back the 20 pounds of muscle I've lost this fall, get leaner and lose the flab I've put on, and to get back into the conditioning I was gaining this summer.

Starting: 210 lbs
Goal: 215 (very different) lbs
Height: 5'9
Goal Date: 8/10
Progress so far: Sucking

I'd recommend that people include their height in their profiles. It makes a huge difference.

So you're trying to lose x pounds of fat and put that weight plus another 5 pounds of muscle back on? What weight are you actually trying to get down to?

I'm game. I always do better with someone going through the process as well. The whole feedback and encouragement thing works wonders for me. I am one of those ones who find excuses for not going to work out even though I end up doing nothing. As far as dieting goes, its all about the lifestyle changes baby. My biggest weakness is candies, cookies, and baked goodies. A positive for me starting out is I already drink lots of water.

Starting: 200 lbs
Goal: 150 lbs
Height: 5'4
Goal Date: Ideal: 7/10 Expected: 12/10
Progress so far: 0 lbs.

Nutriway multivitamins, concentrated fruit and veg tablets, 2 omega 3 tablets in the morning, High Protein breakfast (bacon and eggs or tuna, etc) 200 cal xs protein shake for lunch or meat (tuna/ham) and salad, a positrim protein bar for snacking throughout the day (no sugar 22 grams of protein) and lean meat (steak/fish) and salad/veg for dinner.

I'm using some supplements, but that's just to make life easier, not because they are necessary. Basically just increase protein, cut fats and carbs, and go for whole, unprocessed foods wherever possible. The biggest change for me was eating more fish, and cutting down breads and starchy vegetables like potatoes. Just changingmy diet I dropped from 125kgs to about 95kgs, and because of the increaed protein I've been adding muscle mass as well.

Jut be wary of diets, there is a big difference between losing weight and losing fat.

I'll jump in. I've been meaning to get rid of these extra couple of tires.
I know fast food lunches are a large part of my problem, but how else do I deal with the need to eat and get away from an annoying coworker I happen to share an office with? I've brought in lunch before but being around that coworker all day without any breaks tears at my sanity. Any ideas?

I'll hang out here until we have the angry fat people thread.

I don't believe in new year resolutions. I find waiting for the new year to make an excuse to do something right is silly. So I actually started my "lifestyle" changes a few months back. First I changed from drinking diet sodas to only drinking water. It didn't affect my weight at all but I definately started feeling more energetic. I started a few weeks ago eating only good foods, mainly doing the Subway Jared diet.

So I guess I am up for this competition. Note that the starting weight is when I measured myself a few weeks ago before dieting.

I have longer term goals but I like to look at the whole process in smaller pieces with minor victories along the way.
