Civ4 Pitboss Revival

About 2 years ago, we had at least two games of Civilization 4: Beyond the Sword running with people from the forums. The game I was heavily invested in fell apart when we lost all of our server options, and I'm not sure what happened to the others. I find myself thinking back fondly on that game, and wonder if there is any interest in getting a new game going.

For those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about: Civ4 has a solid multiplayer component, and it works alright when you have people playing at the same time. Finding a group of people who can play a turn-based game for 10 hours at a time is, to put it mildly, challenging. So Civ4 includes a stand-alone application called Pitboss (Persistant Turn Based Server) that keeps the game running while the players connect, take their turn and log off.

When we were playing in our Pitboss game all that time ago, we had it set to 24 hour turns: at least every 24 hours each player would have to log in, make any decisions they wanted to make and end their turn, and if everyone did that in less than 24 hours, the next turn would start immediately. Even with all of this, I would expect a full game to take at least 2 years to complete. The last game was going for about 16 months, and it ended early.

Looks like we are server-ready, player-ready and have basically decided on settings. Game threads coming soon.

I'm up for that. I'd definitely find at least a few minutes to make my turn each day. Does it send notifications that a next turn is due or something?

I picked up the complete pack on the Steam sale a while back and have played all of two games since, what with all the new hotness around. So yeah, I'm interested, provided you want someone inexperienced to kick around:)

What happens if you aren't able to take your turn in the 24 hours? Does it just auto-skip?

I believe it will just add your research, resources etc., just not move your units. I may be wrong though.

Last time I had to bow out after 50 turns or so, because of lack of time. I'm extremely interested in joining up again!

I haven't been involved with any cIV multiplayer yet, but I would love to find the time to play if you started after Christmas.
I'm pretty slammed all the way up to the holidays and then I'm off to the States for two weeks, back on the 7th.

If that doesn't fit with the timeline you've got in mind, Atras, then I understand.

I'd play again. The game I was in actually finished. There's a Steam group already set up, GWJ Civers or something like that, with about forty members.

I'd like to try it, I bought the game when Steam had it on sale awhile ago and haven't put much time into it, this would give me an excuse to play.

I'd love to play, I've been getting into Civilization Revolutions on my iPhone and now I'm addicted enough for some real Civilization action.

Only reason I stopped playing back in the day is because the games all dropped offline or went dead. Count me 100% in for a turn-a-day pitboss game!

+1

I still play Civ 4 multiple times a week and would love to participate in a Pitboss game again.

There was a fan-made app that runs on the server that can be set up to email people of their turn, I think it also had a webpage so you could see who had not yet taken their turn. If that is still running, I'll aim to get that going as well.

I think it will do any queued action you have. If you told a unit to move somewhere that it would take 3 turns to get to, it would advance that unit. City production can be queued, as can research, so any planned missed time can be dealt with easily.

The first few turns are only about a minute a day, however long it takes to load Civ4 and click a button, really. If we get this started before you can really play, you could jump in, take a spot, then turn your position over to the AI and take it back when you have time.

Yeah, I am in that group, but I wanted to open this on the forums first. Everyone else interested should probably join the Steam group, too.

I'm in, if we go again. Last time wasn't a horribly long outing, since I joined in partway through just before the end, but it was somewhat memorable. Namely spending all my turns fearing Farscry and his merry horde of crazed leprechauns, who had spent his turns systematically destroying every other Civ on our landmass...

What was there to fear? We merely wanted to share our love of beer and song with the rest of the world!

Apologies for console-fed retardation, but if I didn't buy Civ IV via Steam then... how does this work? Could I add the game to Steam somehow? Still play with Steam folk?

Yeah. I bought it well before it was available on Steam. In Steam you can add a non-Steam game to your list of games, and it should enable the Steam overlay. Playing with everyone is all done in-game anyway - but the group is good for finding players.

yeah, the group is independent of the game on Steam. I was using a non-Steam copy of the game last time I played. No big deal.

Just be sure you realize how very, very different it is playing with and against humans.

I take it you are interested? I can put you on the alt list. People are always dropping out of these things, and when they do, the slot becomes AI, so the next in line can take over. It makes for a very interesting situation, trying to decipher what other people had been planning.
