New Ways to Support GWJ

You may have noticed some new images along the left side of the page recently. In our continuing effort to offer ways to support the site without punching monkeys or dodging a minefield of text link ads, we've partnered with a few services that kick a little something our way whenever you happen to make a purchase.

GoG.com was the first and continues to be a great place for old PC games completely free of DRM and tweaked to work on modern systems. Games like Divine Divinity, Psychonauts, Commandos 2 & 3 and Beyond Good & Evil are all $10 bucks and totally worth having in your collection. If you click the link to their site and sign up, we'll receive a small credit for everything you buy over the next 12 months.

Stardock's Impulse digital download service offers a ton of new PC games and a great software client to boot. It's easy to backup games you've downloaded and even better, you don't have to be online to play single player titles. It keeps your software up to date and their download speeds are super fast. If you're already a customer and have the Impulse software on your computer, all you need to to is uninstall it and then reinstall with the GWJ affiliate setup file. After that, any game you buy through the Impulse client will kick a small credit our way. Your games are tied to your login, so the process should be painless.

They have a huge Thanksgiving sale on now, so make sure you check them out!

Amazon is this little site that sells various things online. Maybe you've heard of them? We'll be linking to console games in The Week Ahead that take you to Amazon in case you wanted to buy them online. An extra cool feature is that handy search box on the left side of the page. Anything you buy on Amazon's page after using that search nets us a little something without costing you a dime provided you buy something within that browser session.

We also have the GWJ iPhone app for your iPhone and iPod Touch. Bonus content and (soon) we'll have all of the old episodes available for streaming!

Thanks for your patience, hopefully none of this is too offensive or at least easily ignored if that's how you're leaning. Happy Thanksgiving to our American readers, eat lots of food and be sure to pass out responsibly.

Awesome sauce. Thanks for setting up all these ways to support the site. I've probably spent $1000 on stuff recommended on this site in the last year, and I'm glad you guys'll get credit on some future purchases.

I probably won't be buying anything from Impulse or GOG, but I'll definitely use the Amazon search to support GWJ.

If a Canadian uses the Amazon search, will it redirect to the Canadian site or does it only work for the US site?

My son just bought Fallout 1 from GOG using the GWJ link - first time we've used it here. I feel super awesome for doing so!

When's Steam going to allow referrals? I think GWJ would make like, a bazillion dollars a hundred times over.

I'm glad the Amazon idea is generating excitement. It's pretty easy to do, unobtrusive, and might really help out.

Quick question -
I'm not at all opposed to new easy ways for you to make money - you do do an awesome free podcast, after all - but I'm just curious what the current GWJ cashflow situation is like. Was the last donation drive not enough to cover the cash? Do you have cool new plans in the future you're building a bankroll for?

I'm not at all suggesting you're trying to fleece us, I'm just wondering what the situation is since the last donation drive seemed to be pretty amazing in terms of collection.

Yeah, if the last donation drive came short you should let us know.

Nothing to do with the donation drive coming up short, that alone is enough to keep the lights on just fine and dandy and get us some convention coverage next year.

We put a lot of time and effort into the site and we'd like to get into a position where we can kick something back to contributers beyond the drive itself. Putting some innocuous partnerships in place to get us further along toward that goal is a good thing, it helps keep the site sustainable in the long run.

I don't get the Amazon search box, even after going Ctrl F5 to refresh. Is that a region thing?

I'm on Firefox.

Ah, Adblock stopped it. Forgot I hadn't disables it for GWJ on this computer.

I think it's US only, since Amazon Canada seems to do its own thing.

I'm always happy to have a new way to support the site. You guys should explore putting an Amazon link in the catch-all threads for upcoming games. I tend to pre-order anything I get on Amazon, because I have Prime and thus free release day shipping. I'd use the GWJ link for all my pre-orders, and Elysium will be sipping Coronas in paradise within a month.

If I put a game in my Amazon cart now (from the link), but don't pay for it until I get home (don't really want to use my CC on the work machine) will it still credit GWJ?

I think it's session-based, so it won't register unless you search and buy from the same browser session.

They should fleece us. But not the pullover type, the nice zip up ones. That'd be even better than the imminent t-shirts!
