Rocketbirds: Revolution

Badass

You're crouched in a concrete hallway, waiting for your enemy to show himself. This bunker is crawling with them and you know what you have to do. Your dual-pistols are prepared to rain a lead-filled death on the first person through that door. You know they deserve it--their oppressive regime has caused countless to suffer under the weight of their jackbooted heel. Sweat drips down your beak and, …

… Did I mention you're a chicken? Named "Hardboiled"? And that you're fighting the evil penguin empire in their own capital of Albatropolis?

Rocketbirds: Revolution is an old-school action game, ala Flashback, where you're a commando named 'Hardboiled Chicken' trying to take down the oppressive penguin regime. The story is awesomely ridiculous. Characters stare at the screen giving dramatic speeches while the camera slowly zooms in on their beak-adorned face. Propaganda posters and cartoons for the penguin empire are strewn about the levels. A sign beneath a camera says “Big Brother Likes To Watch”.

The animation and art direction are also superb. The quality seen in the animation here is rare for a flash game. Art direction in the levels is terrific and full of the little details that make a game like this fun. The gameplay itself is straight-up Flashback: You can collect keycards, ammo and multiple types of weapons to slowly progress your way through the level, and if you create an account your game is automatically saved on their servers. The demo is plenty to determine whether or not you like the game.

Why You Should Check This Out: A Flashback-type game where you play as a chicken commando badass named 'Hardboiled'. The story revels in puns and other hilarity. The animation and art direction are just top-notch, easily the best animation I've seen in an indie game in a while. The gameplay is spot-on with tight controls, and it has a great demo that plays instantly in your browser--making it easy to give this game a shot.

All the images at the top of the page broke around the time I posted. I'm pretty sure penguins are responsible.

The load times from one screen to the next are quite jarring, at least in the flash demo. Is it any better in the full game?

It's an oddly nostalgic feeling to have to make such large and discrete movements in a game like this. Which is cool.

It's dependent on the resolution selected on the main screen, try turning the resolution down a notch or two and it improves dramatically.

Thanks for the plug, and glad you're enjoying it. Doubly glad you're liking the little jokes and references in the backgrounds.

Yoyoson: yeah, the backgrounds get cached at screen changes, so higher resolutions will result in a slightly longer wait.
