Igneous

Tikis don't get enough love. How can you not like those weird, squat, little statues with oversized teeth and permanently malevolent smiles? Every time I see one I can't help but laugh. Igneous, a tiki-themed racer, puts a big, dumb grin on my face every time.

Don't get me wrong, this isn't Wacky Races meets the Brady Bunch in Hawaii. It's a race from firey death at every step. You play as a pint-sized tiki god that begins by glowing and rolling about his simple little temple. Then the floor starts collapsing beneath you and it becomes a race to get out of the fiery volcano temple before the collapsing floor throws you into the fatally hot lava.

A pulse-pounding tribal drumbeat follows your little tiki through the temple. Fireballs and other types of magic spew all over your path while the floor is constantly being collapsed by molten lava, rocks from the ceiling and evil mojo from giant idol heads. The heart-pounding soundtrack combined with the constantly changing floor give you a game that screams, “Don't stop, ever!”

There's not much to the game, only 4 levels, but that means it's fast. A student game from Digipen, the students even wrote their own 3D engine (as they proudly mention in the intro to the game) for the game. Be sure to crank up the resolution to get the best effect.

Why You Should Check This Out: Igneous is a game where you're a tiny, malevolent tiki god racing through an exploding underground volcano temple. The soundtrack moves you along while the graphics deliver some great eye-candy. A short, but stylish and fun little racing game.

Ugh. it's so hard to stop playing Dragon Age, but you convinced me. This looks like unadulterated fun. I'm in.

It is a lot of fun, albeit a bit frustrating too. In that good way, though, that makes me want to keep playing. Good find!
