I dunno, looks OK. True to canon, in a good meaning of that word. Gylenhaal seems to capture the essense of the "original", Sands of Time prince's character.

Slow mo freezes, however, made me involuntarity reach for a controller. I didn't know those quicktime events etched into my memory so permanently.

I didn't have high hopes, but I was willing to give it the benefit of the doubt simply because Jordan Mechner is one of the screen writers on the thing. I have to say, the trailer made me feel better about it.

I think Gyllenhaal makes a pretty good Prince. He looks and sounds the part enough for it to work for me. I mean, go back and play Sands of Time. That Prince totally looks like Donnie Darko.

Plus, I didn't realize it was Disney. I thought it was from Universal. That made me happy, even though it doesn't really make a difference in the end. In my mind, though, this will help it end up being something closer in feel to the awesome Pirates of the Caribbean movies and much farther away from those terrible Mummy movies.

He looks a lot more like emo-prince from the second game, but I have to admit he certainly sounds the part.

This might actually be watchable, even if it IS a Bruckheimer film.

I'm reasonably hopeful.

Gyllenhaal may seem hard to take seriously, but remember when Heath Ledger was announced as the Joker? At the end of the day actors act for a living, except for Hayden Christensen, so most should be able to carry most roles.

So long, and thanks for all the fish.

I was about to accuse you of blatant cynicism, but then I realised you were right.

I am not giving up on this yet though. I haven't seen the trailer (damn work) but I will look when I get home. I loved the games - even the much maligned second installment - so I refuse to write this off until it is actually out.

If you can't be a good example, at least be a horrible warning.

I know someone who was working on the special effects when the movie was initially delayed.

According to them it was looking pretty sweet, even in its rough state, and this person is not prone to exaggeration.

I'm throwing down a new rule. The Phantom Menace is the Hitler of movie discussions. Any comparisons to the Phantom Menace are terrible, and only hurt your argument. I call it Qui-Gon's law.

Seriously, saying that The Phantom Menace had color in it is a solid argument for black and white movies.

I'm hopeful. Its interesting that they went for a story similar to Sands of Time, but went with a look similar to Warrior Within. However it does, I really hope they make a sequel that has the Dhaka in it. That was a freaky thing.

It looks like another Pirates of the Caribbean movie without Johnny Depp. Whether this is a good thing or a bad thing is up to you. I think it looks tedious, loud, and over-stuffed with characters; your milage might vary.

The Phantom Menace is of the same level of quality as A New Hope and Return of the Jedi. It's the perfect example of a not-bad movie being maligned because of elevated expectations based on nostalgia.

If you want a Hitler of movie discussions, I suggest Attack of the Clones.

I'm hoping this movie is really good and opens the doors to more video game movies that are allowed to not suck and that somehow there is an inexplicable series of events that manages to place me as the writer/director of a Katamari movie. Cannonball Run meets Godzilla with Katamaris. Best movie ever two thumbs up five stars A+!

This is incorrect. I went back to it a while ago to check that I wasn't being to hard on it because of all of the internet-dissection, but I really wasn't. The Phantom Menace is terribly written, terribly acted, terribly put together, and even the cgi has aged in ways that practical effects simply don't. It's an awful movie.

As for Prince of Persia, Mechner being involved makes me interested, Mike Newell is a fairly decent director and I quite like Gyllenhaal as an actor. The trailer doesn't do much to separate itself from your average effects-driven blockbuster though.

Yes. I think it was before Clones was released that one of the networks showed the 4 movies on 4 different nights, and I happened to come in right at the beginning of Menace. I spent 10 minutes thinking very much like you, adam. "Why was I so hard on this movie?" I thought...until Jar Jar waddled onto the screen, prompting an audible "Ooooooooh"

I realize that I'm in the minority opinion here on the internet, but I'm not all that impressed with the writing, acting, direction, and editing of Star Wars itself. It, like The Phantom Menace, is a great movie when you're a kid that doesn't hold up as well, sans nostalgia, when you're older (although I will grant you that the special effects are better in the original trilogy than the prequels).

I'd agree with you that the original Star Wars isn't brilliantly written or put together either, but it's still substantially better than The Phantom Menace, and there's a spark there that's completely missing in the prequels.

I'm actually pretty fond of Star Wars. I plan to watch them with my son when he's old enough, and I expect that we'll hop around like crazy Jedi and have lightsaber battles with yardsticks. I just don't think it's as good (or the prequels as bad) as many would claim.

But, regardless, it's all off-topic. How about that Prince of Persia?

As someone who hasn't played the game, looking at the trailer, it looks interesting. The plot is pretty much one of those fill in the blank things. For me, it is in the same vein of movies as The Mummy, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Die hard (to name a few). Mindless entertainment. Summer Blockbuster.

I won't go to see this move expecting it to have the same impact upon me as, say The English Patient or Saving Private Ryan. Heck, I don't think it will have the same impact as Wall-E or Finding Nemo. I will go into this movie with my suspension of disbelief set to full power, ready to be entertained.

For me, it is all about expectations.
