I heard about this. Crazy insane though he is, I've got to say No Mel is a deal-breaker. Of all the Great 80's Iconic characters to get revived, Max is the one for whom aging makes the most sense. It seems not only natural that Max would become a haggard old man still fighting it out in the wastes, it seems right.

Mel should make a cameo; but that's it. He just has too much crazy attached to him.
That all depends on your frame of reference, I suppose - Cannibal Crowley.
I think it would be fascinating to move forward 20 years from Thunderdome. Or if that movie doesn't count - 25 years from The Road Warrior.
What the hell are you talking about? They totally DO NOT have Tie Fighter. -Veloxi
George Miller is listed as Director, so i have hopes. (George Miller, please be the director of Road Warrior, not the director of Thunderdome. Thanks).

The problem with Thunderdome was that they just tacked the Max part on after they wrote the script. Wanted to make a different movie then realized that the hero could be Max. Road Warrior is one of my favourite movies of all time. So much awesome. It'll probably be too much for me to hope for Gibson and Spence to be in it.

I have high, high, HIGH hopes for this movie. As post apocalypse road rage is my favorite. I got my turbo interceptor ready! But I did like Mad Max slightly better than the Road Warrior, but Thunderdome made me want to murder all those children. I mean as soon as they started whining captain walker I would have bludgeon all of them to death.

I thought Mad Max was horrid. I'm a big enough fan of Road Warrior, which is where the series peaked I think but I just couldnt make it through Mad Max. I tried.. twice maybe three times. Maybe the story is in there, but the director and production values seemed abysmal. even for a b movie on a budget. Maybe it is how the film was edited.

No Mel is strike one. Resurrecting a franchise this old, strike two. Some things are just best left alone. That said, there would have to be absolutely bombastic casting and teaser trailers to make this anything but a DVD rental for me.

It starts slow and it's not really clear what's going on with regard to the setting. Except for the initial chase scene, all the good action happens in the second half of the movie.
Road Warrior was objectively the best of the series and anyone who disagrees has brain damage.

There are people who disagree with this? Aren't they like leprechauns and gnomes--creatures of myth?
NY Times critic A.O. Scott, who I respect greatly, makes a better case for the original that I can, which I think is a great movie, even if it's not as great as Road Warrior. It's pretty brilliant in it's savagery and spare nature.
Beyond Thunderdome just doesn't quite gel. It has some great ideas--even the kids have some creepy potential--but it doesn't come together with the same force Road Warrior does. But the first half, the Barter Town half, is pretty awesome. "Two men enter, one man leaves!" How can you not love that?
What I've read is that George Miller's partner, Byron Kennedy, who was the producer of the first two, was really the guy who brought the story elements together, with Miller being more focused on the visuals and the motion. Unfortunately, Kennedy died in a helicopter crash in '83, so Miller ended up cobbling Thunderdome together from old ideas they had, and it shows.
So Issue #1 for a new Mad Max: Byron Kennedy is still dead.

Yeah, Road Warrior best captures the post-apocalyptic vision. The first has its moments but lacks the "lone survivor" vibe. The third also has its moments, but it feels a bit unfocused. Not sure how I feel about a fourth, but the lack of Mel Gibson doesn't factor into it one way or another.
yeah they messed up the interceptor already, while the other car is a little over the top but there was a cow car in the other movie so I'm ok with it.

I'm fine with it not being Gibson, I don't think he fits the bill anymore.

Fury Road? It'll home video of Mel drunkenly yelling at the cops that pulled him over.
