RunMan: Race Around The World

It's hard to really put into words the feeling I get playing RunMan: Race Around The World. It's got a weird mix of tounge-in-cheek cuteness and genuinely cute enthusiasm. It's insanely fast paced, but you can almost never die. It's quirky and it's fun.

The levels look like they were drawn in MS Paint, with the cutscenes (yes, cutscenes) look like they're in the same style but straight off of someone's canvas. The music is a mix of turn-of-the-century folk, jazz and blues. The gameplay would be right at home on the NES: arrow keys to move, X to jump, Z to “zoom” (run). There are some very interesting twists to the standard platformer formula, and while Super Mario World comparisons are inevitable, it definitely stands on it's own.

It's also donationware, you can download the entire thing for free but are encouraged to donate to the authors.

Looks like a great combination of Sonic, Mario and NO2. Otherwise known as some of my favorite things.

I'm also wondering if anybody else is finding the boss levels as hard as I am.

Game makes me think of Super Mario on star power except for the entire game!

Seems like what Sonic should be- but isn't. Neat.

Found this last night, really digging it. As others have said, feels very much like what Sonic should feel like, but without the overly punishing random deaths.

Wow, you weren't kidding about the bosses. PITA for sure.

Otherwise it's a lot of fun.

You know what Mr. Purple Sea Creature can do? He can shove it. I must have spent 100 tries (or at least 50) on that level. I thought the tornado level's ninjas were annoying, but that level was the worst. Way too difficult when the other levels are mostly ones where you cannot lose.

I thought the vines were pretty fun and their mechanic illustrates the feel of the non-boss-levels perfectly. Unlike other games with similar vines or ropes, these ones are mostly fail proof. They follow your character and therefore always grab him. I can see where trying to get medals is a challenge, but otherwise this game is more of an experience where you're along for the ride. Things are often happening too quickly for you to have much input and I don't think you could ever do a perfect run without memorizing the levels.

The music, graphics, and animations all lend to this spectacle feel. The music has a lot of quick banjo music while at other times there is moody blues music. The little animations such as the spinning while running fast and jumping are awesome. The cut-scenes are fairly poor, especially the "rough paper" background used on them. Otherwise the art style works well and is really sharp and colorful. The cut-scenes and those boss battles are the big things that pull you back from the fun and left me a bit frustrated.

Coolest music ever for a videogame

ok not the coolest but the contrast with the stupidly fast gameplay is great
