Blizzard Project Dropped (?)
Monday, February 9th, 2004 - 11:58am
Of course, neither SC: Ghost nor WoW.
Quote:
According to industry observers, the departure of 25-30 Blizzard staffers in the past 10 months has prompted the San Mateo, Calif.-based Blizzard North development studio to merge its two teams into one and to cancel one of its two unannounced projects.

Must have been StarCraft 2

WOW: Bounce
Gotta be SC2. That''s sad.
It says one of 2 unannounced projects...What would the other one be besides SC2? Let''s hope it is the second one....
I can''t imagine them cancelling SC2 - it would be a huge hit. Unless they''ve overextended themselves by moving into MMOs...

If they kept Starcraft: Ghost over Starcraft 2 they''re in the running for a Darwin this year. Starcraft 2 would be like printing money.
I''m betting it''s just a couple of other projects that probably weren''t sequels. Which would be a shame.

Cancelling SC2 is fiscal suicide. Chances are that it was original piece not tied to any of their other franchises. Which is kind of sad, if you think about it; we all complain that certain dev houses have turned into one trick ponies these days, so it would have been nice to see Blizzard try for something else.

Since Ghost isn''t being devloped in-house, I doubt cancelling it would make any difference.
My guess is that it was Diablo 3. People have been hungry for a new SC for a lot longer and Diablo 3 probably wouldn''t have been as far along.

IT was neither of those...those are huge titles..
it was in fact another console game..
Neither of those titles has even left design/documentation stage.

GG speaks! So, industry insider, which was it?
I have to admit, hearing it was a console game that received the axe made me smile.
I have another confession to make. In the darker parts of me, I hope StarCraft: Ghost tanks. I fear the abandonment of high quality developers.
That''s counter-intuitive....if Blizzard tanks on this game, it will be a major blow to the developer. Given their release schedule, and Vivendi''s overall management scheme, every game out of Blizzard''s studio must be a home run, or the developer might be dissolved, like Black Isle.
Vivendi can continue to develop Diablo/Warcraft franchise games without Blizzard''s help, since they have control of the rights. The only thing keeping Sierra, Blizzard, and the other VU subsidiaries afloat as distinct entities is that the brands have some remaining value.
Actually I have no idea...
but we were part of a large ""syndicate"" looking to possibly buy out the VU game division when it was being shopped (which AFAIK it still is kinda)
Part of the ""financial package"" was a title list of current and upcoming projects..
Under Blizzard with the announced projects were two untitled console titles....
SC2 or Diablo 3 were not on the list at all as upcoming titles/projects
They were listed as IP''s for obvious reasons. Blizzard was really the sole interest we had in the package.. as their IP''s are REALLY REALLY golden.
Which leads me to ponder when/if SC2 or Diablo 3 get the green light..what form they will surface..
I suspect Diablo 3 will become a true 3D title...
SC2 may possible go the WC3 route though I suspect they may strive for greater things as they originally had planned for WC3 in the early goings before the reality of the tech interfered with their design.
Shame Microsoft didnt pull the trigger and get VU.. I think Blizzard would be in good hands with good old Billy boy.

I dont know about SC2 but I do know D3 is at some point of the development phase.
If you think about it, it would serve Blizzards purposes better to not list SC2 and D3 as upcoming titles as they are very protective of the press surrounding all their franchizes. Blizzard is a hot ticket item even without the listing of SC2 and D3 so why include them?
We know Blizz North is up to something and it isnt WoW or SC:Ghost (Nihilistic)...

Yes...but AFAIK its not left the document/design phase..
My understanding was the 2 console titles listed in the prospectus were/are at some stage in development..
Again..in the prospectus Diablo 3 and SC2 where mentioned a few times..but simply as IP''s not current/upcoming projects.
If its under wraps and in actual development..its a very very well kept secret..

On the bright side, with the cancellation of an untitled console game, maybe they''ll get started on SC2 or Diablo 3 sooner than they would have otherwise. Of course, either one would still be a good 3-4 years away, but hey, we can hope they''ll start, right?

Although 25-30 staffers seems like an awful lot of people to support one early stage, second teir console project. Or is it?
Xbox Live: hubbinsd
I don''t think the resources from this will move to SC2 or D3, the games were cut because the resources left the company, that doesn''t make any sense at all. They have fewer resources now, hence fewer games. They''re not trying to fill up the hole left by cancelling these games.

No, but blizzard doesn''t seem to like releasing more than one game at a time. If they now only have 1 game in development, that means the next release after that is more likely to be SC2 or Diablo 3, rather than some game nobody cares about. It''s not about a redistribution of their resources, but a redistribution of their release plan.
Graktar, Orc Hunter
The possiblity that they have games on the drawing board other than SC2 and Diablo 3 is what annoys me.
I wouldnt be. It could just be that they are trying to release games more often. It would be nice to not have to wait 2-4 years for a new Blizzard game provide quality is intact.

You''re right! It''s completely counter-intuitive. I didn''t say the rational side of me wanted it to tank, did I?
There are a few Korean guys at the dojang where I practice. I know that if SC2 is cancelled/suspended, they''re going to visit Blizzard HQ to rip them a new one in the truest sence of the word.

SC2 may be on hold but it would never be cancelled...
It will show up in some form at some time..
I''m hoping Blizzard give the Massive online RTS a shot..
I would have faith that they could figure out how to make it work.

The million dolar question:
Can anyone, even Blizzard, make a worthy sequel to Starcraft?
I mean, let''s face it, we''re talking about almost a new religion here. Starcraft is, by all means deservedly, valued so high that I think that even Blizzard at it''s peak may have too much to do in making a worthy sequel... As much as I would like to play SC2 RIGHT NOW, I can''t but fear about will it be good enough, following in the footsteps of a true gaming legend.

No...your right..simply doing SC2 with the WC3 engine would be the work of EA...
Blizzard will wait...and wait...until they can do something beyond that..
I''m holding out for MMOG StarCraft.. I believe it can happen!

Only way that MMOG Starcraft can work is Battlefield way IMO. Give me canister rifle, laser pointer and nuke silo and let me at ''em.

One the one hand I wouldn''t mind seeing something like this, on the other hand I have such fond memories of StarCraft and am afraid that witnessing hopping Protoss units at the Scout spawn place might destroy the experience.
Man, I''ve got the blinders on... I never even *considered* a MMORTS!

As an obsessive RTS player, I long for the day that this game exists, especially from Blizzard and especially in the Starcraft world. The rest of my life fears it.
