The movie "9" Ask-All

I've seen 2 trailers for this movie, called "9", coming out 9-9-09. Aside from it being a Tim Burton movie, know nothing about it, heard nothing about it, seen absolutely nothing about it. No names attached to it other than Tim Burton, which is a mixed blessing- it could be really good, or really weird to the point of no return.
What is it based on?
Where the hell did it come from, and how come it hasn't been really mentioned until recently in the main stream?
Has anybody else heard of it?
Is there a game tie-in?
How f*cked up is Tim Burton?
Is Johnny Depp mad he's not involved?

Sorry, Max, I'm just laughing because this is like the 9th thread on the movie. It's so hard to search for in the GWJ search, so no one realizes there are threads already made.

Not sure if I should post in this thread or one of the other 8!

I know a bit because I follow the computer graphics and animation community. Way back in 2005 this guy named Shane Acker created a 10-minute computer animated short that was called "9". It was good enough to win quite a few awards, one of which being best in show at the Siggraph conference animation festival that year (the largest annual gathering of CG people in the world). It also must have been good enough to get Tim Burton's attention!

I remember back four years ago when the short came out it was featured on all the big CG sites. People were amazed by it. This film has been a long time coming!

I don't know how he feels about it but I'm always mad when Johnny Depp isn't involved.

See, my wife gets all mad when I remind her that Johnny Depp is involved. She likes to pretend his wife doesn't exist.

I can't wait to see this movie! I've only seen 2 other threads on this movie, and found this one by accident while searching for the others and only getting the other movie with a 9 that came out earlier this summer about the alien concentration camps. I'd rather watch CG sackboys in a post-apocalyptic world fight for their magically animated survival.

Let's use this thread. I can't find the others either...and I think I started one of them.

I'm very stoked for this film, but I must also say that you could play scenes of grass growing to Coheed and Cambria's Welcome Home and I'd probably bust a nut.

Wow. How did I miss that?

Tkyl, I had just assumed your avatar was based on something you'd created in LBP. Apparently, I was very wrong.

Cant wait to see this. It has such a unique feel to it.

Tim Burton is also having an exhibition in the MoMa for those interested:

Based on a creative short film. Adult themed animation. Affectations of the Puppet Master. Tim Burton, Producing not directing(a la Nightmare Before Christmas). And a trailer featuring Coheed and Cambria.

Color me fascinated.

Also for similar reasons, my brother and I are in week 1.

awful film. Biggest let down of the summer.

Go watch the preview over and over for 2 hours, it's more entertaining.

That makes me sad. The trailer was still good enough to get my $10, so I'll see it anyway

I'll give a more in depth view after the weekend, so read my post as trying to take some of the wind out of the hyped up expectations for people.

Have to concur. I was incredibly bored with the movie. I was sorely disappointed and wanted very much to love the film. Can't win them all I am afraid.

The general consensus with the critics is: visually stunning but the story is lacking and cliche, but still go see it if only to encourage more animation for adults.

Okay, screw the critics. I saw the movie and loved it. My girlfriend liked the visuals but didn't much care for the plot (which I loved too). Psh. Guess I'm going to have to white knight this now.

Also, during the last 5 minutes of the film, man tears may or may not have been shed.

I wish I could have been that involved, but it really just oscillated back and forth between mediocre and really boring.

That bad huh?

I wanted to go to the movies again tomorrow though. Maybe I'll see Whiteout. Even if it's awful I'll at least be able to go all googley-eyed over Kate Beckinsale for an hour and a half.

It's pretty blasted awful. Down there with Battlefield Earth, Ballistic: Ecks vs Sever, etc. If it had any actual video game basis, I would have thought it was an Uwe Boll flick.

It's like they took the worst parts of bad movies (Death Race, Hackers) and smooshed em into one flick. Or as if the two directors were competing to see how low they could go.

D1: I hit bottom!

D2: Oh yeah? Well, I dug a hole in the bottom!

D1: Fine! I'll pour raw sewage in that hole you dug!

...

This is not a good thing.

[edit]

Er, um. Back on topic, I am sad to hear that reviews of 9 are not coming through as positive. I like the visual stylings, so I was really hoping they'd have a solid story to tack on.

I'm in the same boat. It looked like it could be interesting, and I'm a sucker for post-apocalypse movies. It's not playing in the theaters I normally go to though, so I'll probably just rent it anyway.
