My daughter wants to model for Playboy *nsfw*

Notice this is probably the first thread I've seen in a long while that doesn't have a "pics or it didn't happen comment". I think Badken must have known what the community is like and pre-empted it

If only more Goodjers were as wise as he.

So, is it considered rude to go hunting on the internet for the "rest" of the photos?

I'm wondering about this as well.

Only if you don't share them.

I think she's beautiful. And having been a 21 year old girl, I understand the draw of the attention. But if I could add a bit of feminist perspective, I suggest that modeling for Playboy is a decision that should not be taken lightly.

Think of this: In this thread; which is full of rational folks who like you and are trying to avoid being offensive, the thing that is most discussed is how she looks. How she presents herself in a way that pleases men (and some women). The sly innuendo of using her picture as an aid to gratification. The things being discussed about her are not her experience in the hospitality industry, not her education, not her hopes and dreams; but rather if she has the necessary requirements to be considered, pardon the expression, "wank-worthy".

These sorts of magazines, which granted, are fairly mild, still portray women as passive packages, devoid of free will, actors who exist only to pleasure the audience. There is a strong culture of sexism that surrounds them, especially the Playboy mythology. Bunnies exist to please...that's the whole point of Bunnies.

Comparing Playboy to Michelangelo is a bit of a reach. Michelangelo as never packaged, sold, promoted as a way for suburban Italians to get their jollies in a brief stop at the outhouse.

Also worth noting, Playboy just this quarter published an article containing a list of conservative women who deserved to have bad sexual things happen to them. (The article used the term "hate-f**k".) The article mostly targeted conservative women; such as Michelle Malkin (whom I despise, but still doesn't deserve to be the target of this sort of misogynist venom). The fact that the corporation vetted, edited, and published this screed of rape fantasy, shows a corporate culture that values women only when they are objectified silent sex objects, and that women who disagree with them should be humiliated and threatened.

As well, every playboy centerfold is listed on Wiki, making it a "top of the list" search result when anyone ever searches her name...forever. In the hospitality industry, that could be a killer. Keep in mind how many places are owned or operated by women...women who have worked their asses off to compete in a men's field that is insanely sexist, and how they're likely to respond to someone whom they think is trying to use their looks rather than their skills to get ahead of the game? The word sabotage doesn't even begin to cover the things that will fall into the path of your daughter's success. That may be true in any field, but it's going to be especially true in a professional kitchen or hotel.

As I've said; I understand the ego boost, I understand the cash, but I suggest that the short term gratification may not be worth the long term fallout. Were it my child, I would probably council against this decision.

Bam said the lady.

If she's doing it no matter what, avoiding using her real name might be a good idea as far as Google goes.

I totally agree about the Bunny culture, and I said as much, but...

I'd like to learn more about this. That's pretty repulsive, surprising to me and very un-Playboy-like. It could unfortunately be the case that the guy who moved from Maxim management to Playboy management is just gearing up to wreck the brand.

EDIT: after a bit of googling I a lot of commentary on the article (though I couldn't find the original). Really sad, and hopefully not representative of a new wave of Playboy attitude. Playboy has gone through a lot of cultural changes, from the initial subservient sex-toy bunnies to the empowered women of the 80's and beyond, after the Playboy clubs closed and the women took charge at the magazine. I think it would be a loss to have the brand turn into another attitude-laden and outright offensive crapfest like Maxim.

BTW, my daughter did not use her real name. Like I said, smart girl.

I vote for Certis E. Legion.

It absolutely was.

That's right, Legion is the last name. If not for those damn polygamy laws, she would just be the start!

Certis always comes before Legion.

That's what she said.

Wow. Far too much information there.

And Elysium's always in the middle, in case you were wondering what the "E." stood for.

Certis wrote:

That's just selfish.

A few things:

Beware the lure of easy money. She doesn't want to be drawn away from her career by easy money until it becomes more and more difficult to pickup where she left off.

I'd ask what your daughter wants out of this? Is it not enough that she is pretty or that her friends and family recognize her as beautiful? Does she need confirmation that she is in a class of beauty far above norm that a picture spread in Playboy would validate? I worry that needing that kind of recognition, may not be a one time deal. After that, her loved ones won't be able to compete.

A beautiful woman shouldn't have to seek this kind of affirmation out. She wouldn't sweat how often it comes to her unsolicited. And she always has free discretion on whether to act on it or dismiss it. The fact that she is seeking this out, may indicate that she is devaluing the love she gets from friends and loved ones and that is not healthy.

I don't think, "because she can" is a good enough reason. If she can, then she can do it again and again. Most of the paths leading from that are not rosy.

Sure flaunt it if you've got it. But there is no added benefit from doing it on a national stage as compared to everyday life. Ambition is good but physical beauty is not a talent, despite the excessive value society places on it.

The only ting redeeming the images in my head from the turn this conversation has taken is Legion's avatar, Certis' and elysium's are messing with my brain.

Prepare to be messed with more:

Please! We already have pictures of Certis and Elysium sleeping together, we don't need to see them in scantily clad outfits.

That's crappy news regarding that article in Playboy. Although it's a common joke, Playboy, at times, has also been known for "the articles". That one described sounds horrid.

Jesus people, I just ate...

Well good for her. I don't know if I would advertise that my little girl was going to be in playboy but I'd be happy for her if that is what she wanted to do.

Let's say she used the money to open her own restaurant, instead of taking out a small business loan and burdening the business the first five years with a debt load. She could also use the publicity she will gain to plug her new place, helping her conquer another common hurdle on the way to a successful business.

Sure, not every ending to the story is a happy one, but there are at least as many good outcomes as there are bad.

I was thinking the same thing.

BadKen, perhaps it's best that you don't show her this thread.

Why is that? She wants to pose for playboy. People will talk/think about her in much more debasing terms, not to mention what they'll be "doing" while talking/thinking. I would think this thread is rather tame compared to what's to come.

Yes, but these are her dad's friends talking like this.

This thread delivers in multiple ways!

.. At least he didn't say "my daughter is doing stuff on a website".. that would be bad. Playboy nudes are at least tasteful, IMHSOP, well, as long as it's not that China chic from the WWF.
