June 29 - July 3

A first and casual glance at this week's release list might make it seem rather difficult to get particularly excited about anything. This first impression is wrong, and it is in fact very easy to get excited. I speak not of a Harry Potter game which will quiety generate a hojillion dollars of revenue, nor of whatever the hell BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger is. No, I speak of Trine, one of those wonderful games that comes out of nowhere to demand your attention.

I direct you to the Trine demo and I think there within you will find an adequate and comprehensive explanation of why this game is rightfully buzzworthy. I could perhaps unload a full cargo plane of adjectives and adverbs to describe its fine demo, but I will simply say that it is a beautiful exploration of a world I look forward to playing in for hours. It is part RPG, part puzzle game, part platformer, part physics-based interactive world, part side scroller and part action title. And it is instantly charming.

Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood could be worth a rental for interested parties, and I have no solid foundation for knowing what FUEL is but with so few racing games on the PC it's hard to begrudge any even half-hearted attempt. For me, however, it's all about the digital distribution of Trine to scratch that hard to reach action, puzzle, platformer, RPG hybrid itch.

I've been keeping an eye on Trine for a few months now mainly because I liked the look of it so much. I might wait and see to make sure there's enough (varied) content in there to justify the $30 price tag.

Try €30

Anyway, with Trine, FUEL (well, it should be moderately entertaining) and Call of Juarez (interesting? Hopefully), this will be a decent week to be me.

Edit: Holy damn. Trine is tons of fun! Just to be sure, this game will have *online* co-op, right? Playing this with two friends would be utterly fantastic. I'm buying it either way.

The demo for Trine is amazing. I grabbed the demos for Arma 2 and Trine off Steam and after 5 minutes with Arma 2 (meh) I played Trine from start to end. If this is small sample of the final game, I am sold - 30 Euros or not.

Played thru the demo in 1/2 an hour or so.

Sold, this is awesome.

Edit: Steam has this for 10 bucks cheaper than the regular price right now if you preorder, and they're giving away a copy of Shadowgrounds with it. Damn those enablers at Valve.

Trine was compared to The Lost Vikings, which I remember very fondly. Any thoughts on the validity of the comparison?

I'm getting the pitchforks and torches out. I've been waiting so long for some more good 2D brawling with quirky characters.

Trine really surprised me and I was instantly sold after playing the demo. It's beautiful, charming and utterly entertaining.

Honestly though... I feel like I just can't catch up this year. I have a huge stack of games still shrink wrapped and that doesn't include all the digital downloads. Steam and Impulse are really killing me with all the sales and impulse buys.

Just a quick comment on Digital Distribution (mentioned above), and about the level of frustration involved in playing a computer game these days:

This weekend I wanted to play Dawn of War II. So, I figured I'd downloaded it from steam. First I had to update Steam. Then I had to download the game, which took a long time. Then, it had to update. Then it had to install Direct X (even though I'm sure I already have it). Then it had to download the Games for Windows Live thing. Then it had to download my profile into GWL. Each of these processes came with a progress indicator which I watched intently, waiting to play the game. It got to the point where I was getting flashbacks to the movie Office Space where he's trying to shut off his computer. So, to play the single player campaign in this game, you have to log into steam, start the game, log into Games for Windows Live, then load your save. This kind of thing is getting ridiculous. I was ready to strangle the person who thought all this crap was a good idea.

I would say that I was ready to retreat to my 360 or PS3, but that got me thinking too. Remember the days when a friend came over and you could just plug another controller in and start playing. Now you have to sync the controller, make a new profile for your friend, sign in using the second profile, and hope the game still recognizes any DLC or whatever you had on the first account.

Isn't technology supposed to make your (gaming) life easier?

That does seem like a lot of work, but I think you're mis-representing it. I mean, my Steam is on all the time, so I never run into the point where I have to update it in order to play a game. Sometimes once I'm done playing a game it asks me to restart steam to update, but I just press the buttona nd its done. No waiting there. Of course you have to wait for it to download, but the Steam servers are very quick if you have a good internet connection. If you don't want to have to download a game, you can just as easily run to the store and pick it up. Then the initial start up with Direct X configuration has never taken more than 3 minutes for me.. I don't know. I think the biggest problem is the GfWL. I hate it, and it makes EVERYTHING take forever. Growl.

Actually, this post almost has nothing to do with you or the complaint it takes a bit to get a direct download. Mostly I just hate all the hoops you have to jump through for GWL.

It basically takes Lost Viking's mechanics and puts it into a fantasy setting with a physics engine. The characters don't have exactly the same functions, but they are kind of similar.

Really just download the demo. It will only take a few minutes and even if the game doesn't grab you it's totally worth the time.

I'll gladly pay $30 for this game.

Also Dawn of War 2 is not the standard for how digital distribution works. It's the poster child for making it way more convoluted than it needs to be.

Chiming in to agree that the Trine demo was an absolutely wonderful surprise and that I'm excited about its release (it comes out this week? Seriously? Glee!).

Though I do have to ask - if I have a concern, it's that at least in the demo, co-op play is limited to local multiplayer. Does anyone know if the full release has co-op play over the tubes with Steam? I can't imagine getting a bunch of pals crowded around my PC to play this, so if this is the sort of thing where 'net multiplayer is only coming with the XBLA version - or even if not, since at least getting friends locally around the 360 is easier than the PC - I might have to just wait for that.

It's an insane 2d fighter from the makers of Guilty Gear (which is also insane). I was obviously (I hope) being sarcastic, but if you have any interest in fighting games (which I suck at btw), it's worth a look. There are basically only 4 buttons to use in the game (weak, medium, strong attack and a "special" attack), so it's a bit easier to get into than a lot of other fighting games. I'm not saying you'll be good and the learning curve after basic combos is pretty steep, but I actually preordered it and I never do that and, lest ye forget, I suck at fighting games. Stay away if you hate anime. It's very Japanese.

Big Download is saying Trine will sell for $20 on PSN. Now, I'm not ashamed to say that I am a total cheap-ass. My question having not yet played the demo is whether the PC version is superior enough (or at all) to justify a 50% premium on the price. Any thoughts?

Technical support.

I believe that's what Grin said about the higher price for Bionic Commando Rearmed.

I'm just guessing.

Edit: Apparently pricing is set by the publishers (which there are three for this game), so no reason will probably ever be given.

I think the boxed retail PC game is priced at $40 making the Steam preorder $10 cheaper. That means the PSN edition is $20 cheaper!

The first Call of Juarez was good enough that I'll likely pick up the sequel eventually.

I think Jim Rossignol did an experimental play diary for FUEL last week. I'll link if I go back and find it.

I couldn't disagree more. Finally got around to renting Fuel, and it's fan-freaking-tastic. It's just the right blend of arcadey-racer, off-road action, and over-the-top crazy to be barrels of fun for me.

I really have to wonder what game some of the reviewers out there were playing, as many of the complaints are objectively wrong if you spend some actual time with the game. I can see people not liking it since it has some pretty specific and limited appeal, but it's definitely not a bad game.

While I don't think I'd like playing the mage with a gamepad for an entire playthrough, the knight and thief handle just fine. When I get the game I'll be inviting a friend over to see how it works. (Guess who doesn't regret buying a 360 pad exclusively for the PC?)

In other news, I just tried Bound in Blood. Now, I enjoyed the first one, but it had all sorts of things wrong with it. Not the least of which was a tremendous performance issue. That is completely gone in this new one. I'm on an 8800GTS 512, Q6600 @ 2.7ghz with 4 gigs of RAM. Not too shabby a system, but certainly outdated, and everything runs smooth as butter at all maxed out.

The gameplay is largely the same, but with a lot of neat new additions. It's heavily accented with a pretty cool cover system. In first person. Not perfect, but so far it works. Bullet-time is still in there, though different. While there's the same old gauge-fill-up-then-shoot-in-slow-mo, there are also times when you and the brother you're currently not playing will team up to storm a room, and the effect is definitely appreciated.

The graphics are... better? I'm not really sure. They're not worse by any means, but they do look very similar to the first title. There's only really one thing that bothers me, and that's your own shadow. Like the other game, it looks just wrong. Strange thing to nitpick at, but there you go.

Bottom line: It's a totally new game with some cool ideas, and a really cool setting (it's a western, for God's sake). There also looks to be a lot more depth here, and--aside from the bug fixes--I think that's exactly what the first one needed. So if you played that and actually gave it the time of day, this is absolutely worth checking out.

Oh, who else but me LOVED playing with the bow in Call of Jaurez? That thing felt so bloody right.

This is why I usually watch the gametrailers review. They try and actually show you through gameplay video what they're talking about when they criticize a game. I don't think they like Fuel all that much though. Here's a link to the video review so you can see for yourself if you so choose: http://www.gametrailers.com/video/review-hd-fuel/51626
