Trine Catch-All (PC, PSN)
Friday, June 26th, 2009 - 1:18am
Coming out on Steam July 10th and the PS3 soon after, Trine is a physics-based platformer that has you switching between a thief, fighter and wizard. It's oozes charm from every glow infused pore.

Demo for the PC version is out now! Click Link Get. According to Shacknews, there may be an XBLA version sometime in the future.
I've been intrigued by this one for months now and the demo has confirmed my warm fuzzy feelings about it. It actually supports local coop but I haven't had a chance to try it.

When I first read about it, I thought "Gauntlet!"
Now I am thinking, "Warm and fuzzzyyyy unnggh!!"
EDIT: Downloading now.
The demo blew me away, feels like a next gen version of the Lost Vikings. It also controls amazingly well with the mouse/keyboard, somewhat of a rarity with platform games.
My days of not taking you seriously have certainly come to a middle.

The game looks awesome.. I think I'll go with the PS3 version though as I love playing platformers on the couch.
I wanna friend you up!

A friend of mine pointed the trailer of this game out to me. I loved the Lost Vikings, and this looks quite similar, so colour me excited!
Also, Shazam, thanks to you I now have the 'friend you up' song stuck in my head. Damn you!
If you can't be a good example, at least be a horrible warning.
Nice little game. Definitely getting the Lost Vikings feel, although you're really controlling three characters in one rather than three in parallel. Also with the 3D physics engine the game doesn't feel quite that precise. It's light on puzzles which aren't difficult anyway and the combat is just hack and slash. The platforming is okay although a little wonky at times, especially with the grappling hook. The game is pretty but visually cluttered so its hard to tell what's what at times. However there's a lot of charm to the game and it's still fun to play despite its flaws. Curse the demo for ending so abruptly.
I thought Shadowgrounds was a lot of fun, and this concept is closer to my taste, so I'm really looking forward to it.

Just finished the demo and damn it was awesome. This game went from being interesting to a must buy for me and I'm now officially a fanboy. The atmosphere just worked and the music was fantastic. Yeah the platforming was a bit "wonky" but started to feel quite good after I got used to it. So far I'm proud of my fellow Finns at Frozenbyte! Lets just hope they amp up the difficulty and puzzles just the right way and this one is an epic win. Not sure though if I'll get this on the PC or PS3. PC worked well and I would really like to try the PS3 version before i make the call.
As well as the link in the article (fileshack link), the demo is also available from Steam.
The game is ridiculously charming. The art style is really beautiful. But the gameplay mechanics did nothing for me. Lots of platforming didn't do it for me. I like the character individualization-- essentially one for puzzle solving (mage), one for platforming (thief), and one for fighting (warrior) with a good bit of crossover for these (thief can also fight, mage can also platform) but it didn't do it for me. Still, loved how it looked.

Looks amazing, will try tommrow.
FYI the demo is available from steam.
Fear the flames...
Very cute. I agree that the controls were better than expected for a PC platformer, but I am still interested in trying this one on a console.
I did note that the PC price will apparently be $39.99. I can't imagine an XBLA game going for that much, so what's with the potential disparity?

I'm probably going to wait for the PS3 version to be able to play it on the sofa with my wife, but I was surprised to like it so much. It's so pretty it's hard to not look at the screen. The feel of the platforming seemed a little off to me, but then again, so did Little Big Planet's to begin with. There's a lot to like, although some of the animation and characterization just didn't do it for me. The Knight is cool.
I knew they could do something very neat with the stuff they'd already learned with Shadowgrounds, but this is really a step above what I was expecting. Well done, Frozenbyte, looking forward to the full version.
Steam has it on pre-order bundled with the original Shadowgrounds (link) at 30€, seems like a great deal to me.

The demo was an absolute delight to play. The glowing colors and amusing narration are a big plus for me. The puzzles were kinda shallow but (as far as i could tell) it was the very beginning of the game.
However, I can't see myself spending $40 on this. $20? Totally, I'd grab it in a second. Maybe even 30. But 40 is just a tad too much.
Played this on PC. I absolutely hate it. The controls feel completely unresponsive. Its like I'm playing a bad flash game. Really, a platformer is all about moving around the world, and it is intolerably difficult to do so in this game.
Plus, 39.99. Really? I would pay 9.99 for it - if I liked the controls, that is.

I played with a 360 controller, seemed to control fine for me.

I thought it controlled well, and I used the keyboard.
It's only $30 on Steam. I expected this game to only be $20, but I also expected something much less polished. I'll probably get it.

Well, I've never been the biggest plaformer fan, so maybe I just don't get the appeal. But I thought playing Trine felt like trying to make the Yamato do the macarena.

Looks great and I had no problems with the controls (played with mouse and keyboard). It's the feel of the game that sells this to me, the narration, the visuals and the general charm. I liked the way there were multiple ways through the level so that if one character dies you may still be able to carry on. Also liked the fact that a lot of the puzzles were optional, however skip them and you don't get as much experience and take longer to level up.
Not sure about the price point. A little bit cheaper and I'd have pre-ordered it straight away but can't imagine it costing this much on the 360 and get the feeling it will be in one of Steam's weekend deals relatively soon after release... I guess it all depends on whether I want the bonus of Shadowgrounds which I hadn't even heard of before now.
Good call Thowky. I'll wait for the Steam deal.
Yeah, I liked the demo but didn't expect the price point to be $30 and Shadowgrounds doesn't interest me at all.
Ok, just finished the demo and I'm totally sold.
First of all, this game is GORGEOUS. The environments are absolutely beautiful and it's a joy to just watch this game in action. The platforming is fun as hell too - this is Lost Vikings HD people.
30$ is just right. I can't wait to get this game - and see what the next wizard abilities are. The demo only hints at the cool RPG aspects this game has to offer - I think there is a lot more content than the demo suggests.

Slightly off-topic: Shadowgrounds was pretty great as well, although it's clearly a more budget title than Trine is. I do recommend it if you were at all into Alien Breed. Great physics, lighting, mood and action, weaker on the character design and especially plot, which you might want to disregard.

Shadowgrounds is basically DooM3 done in a SmashTV style. The original was pretty good but at times quite tough (I only beat one early boss by exploiting a bug), but the follow-up, Shadowgrounds: Survivor was much easier and included hardware physics support to make things bounce about nicely
As for Trine - color me intrigued. Frozenbyte is certainly working its way up my "respected developers" list!

I haven't played a proper platformer in ages and whilst it's not my normal cup of tea, this demo has me almost convinced to get this on two counts: 1) it looks gorgeous and 2) it's a platformaer that seems to play well on the PC. I only say almost as it seems a little expensive compared to similar offerings. I wait to be proved wrong though...

Any idea on the pricing for this on psn/xbla? $29.99 seems awfully steep for a downloadable game on those machines.
Oh, and the topic might need a little tweak. All the major news outlets have this listed on all three platforms now.
I'm digging this. I really like how it plays on the PC.

I am not much of a platformer - don't tend to buy, well, any. But following up on Certis' twit (twat?) the other day, I figured I needed to lose my pants. It was 90+ degrees yesterday afterall.
I absolutely loved the art! The whole environment (music included) and the wonderful narration really make it something enjoyable and worthwhile. Not sure if I will pony up the ducats when it's released, but I totally appreciate what they've done here. Bravo!

I had some trouble putting my finger on the thing that got me feeling so warm and fuzzy about the whole atmosphere and charm of this game. As I thought about it I realised it reminds me alot of the Discworld saga and even the narration reminded me of the intro of the brilliant Discworld point&click adventure game from the 90's. Trine propably wont go as far in to the absurd side of things as Discworld does but I'm very eagerly waiting to see what humorous back and forth these characters will engage in during the game. Also about the price. I could be totally wrong here but I vaguely remember hearing that this is actually close to a 10h game so if thats true, then the 30$ price is actually a bargain.
I got the demo and am going to try it today. I can't wait for this as I'm a massive Frozenbyte fanboy. I loved Shadowgrounds and after I beat it, I e-mailed them with my comments both good and bad. The President of the company e-mailed me back personally and had a great back and forth with me. He was super nice and was very straight up about why some of the small issues the came had were there. And in Shadowgrounds Survivor, they were all fixed.
Awesome team totally deserving success.
