This. If you staccato click the block heals between strikes.

I'll third their advice. The dying thing is fairly standard, though. You don't lose anything but the stuff you're carrying when you die.

This is not strictly true: if you know where you were when you died and you can get there in time (within 5 minutes is what I have seen posted, but I am not certain it is that long), you can get all your stuff that yopu were carrying back after you re-spawn.

You are correct in the main - I meant what you said but I wrote it wrong. Thank you for that.

But in the beginning I'm not totally wrong - you only get your stuff back if he's in a position to fight off what killed him or wait until full sun (if it's not a spider or a creeper which don't die in the sun), which your first few nights you rarely are.

I thought I'd mention that you can customize your characters skin by going to the preferences link at www.minecraft.net (when it's up ) and download the template to make your own OR upload a template you already have. There are plenty availible, just do a little google-fu and you'll find a bunch. I'm currently rolling as Gordon Freeman. Anyway, it came up last night on the MP server but I thought with the influx of interest I'd mention it.

Also, if you downloaded the executable you still CAN play offline. Just a reminder

Hey guys, does anybody know where I can download the executable? I started playing last night and lost about 10 hours, was desperately hooked, and may have paid some euros for the game. Now I can't get to the site, can't play the minecraft... I NEED MY FIX, PLEASE, I'LL DO... um... not many things, ok, not anything... Just some things...

He released an update today and there are some many people trying to download his server is getting overloaded. Unfortunately you are going to have to wait till things settle down.

oh nooo...

Thanks for the explanation though, I guess I'll just go into the corner and sob.

So the latest update causes some very weird behavior on my system. The program comes up and shows the splash screen, but when it goes to the main menu my entire screen turns what looks to be a pure 50% gray. The OS still runs, and I can still see and move my mouse pointer, but that's about all I can see. CTRL-ALT-DEL causes the screen to flash black for a moment before returning to a slightly darker gray, indicating that even though the Windows 7 ctrl-alt-del screen successfully appears and the GL context changes, somehow the game still manages to completely bork the framebuffer.

Seems to be a bit of a buggy update, there are mentions on the forums of the gray screen issue.

Possibly due to a partial update? I don't know what kind of error checking Notch has in his update mechanism.

EDIT: I see Notch has Minecraft up for free now due to the problems, and is using an Amazon cloud repository for downloads. Even with downloads out of the equation, I'm not sure if making the game temporarily free for all is the smartest method when bandwidth is being hammered.

He fixed the Grayscreen issue:

from twitter

I found the grayscreen thing! It was caused by a failed Gamma setting experiment! It should be fixed now.

One caveat with the new crouch feature: Move BACK from the edge before releasing that shift button! If you're right on the edge when you release shift, you will fall.

Just bought the game. Heard about it on the podcast. Would love to join the community. Unfortunetly new to the sight long time listener.

Phew...that was a struggle and a half to grab the patch and no mistake, but all seems good now.

Also, made the near fatal mistake of reading some the comments on his blog re: the current situation. Between general trolls and some peoples ridiculously inflated sense of entitlement...blech. You'd think they'd sunk their entire life savings into the game or something.

Hey, quick question, I was finally able to grab the executable, but now every time I launch the game, it does the "grab updates" thing, followed by a black screen. Is this something that happens with the new patch, or should I trawl through the support forum for a solution?

You may want to grab the newer executable, I have both versions and the difference is about 1kb, get the one that he says "If that version doesn't work for some reason, try this: Minecraft.exe"

I can't embed html... sorry.

but I'm encountering a new problem where now I just gets this black screen after all the updates are done...

Whenever I launch, it tries to download the patch but then announces:

Fatal error occurred (5): null
Extracting lwjgl.jar.lzma to lwjgl.jar

I sure wish I could just decline the update for the moment and play my single-player game until the situation improves.

Edit: I went to minecraft.net, which has reverted to plain text since it is getting hammered. Notch posted an updated version that resolves the problem I was having. Just had to download it and replace my old Minecraft.app with the new one. Then when it launched, it auto-updated without any problem. Yay!

The crouch/sneak feature is great for building skyways and bridges!

So I'm a bit behind on comments due to multiple birthday parties today, but hope to have the update tomorrow when I have a moment to breathe.

As a note to those discussing trees before, I also used to take the time to cut down all the leaves...but eventually disobeyed that if you just let them die by cutting all the trunks out, the saplings fall anyway. Saves a ton of time.

Does anyone know if my old save will work with the new version? I only need to add one more tower to my castle before I declare victory, and I'll be damned if I'm going to start over just because I decided to try out crouching.

My old save appears to work fine.

For all my fellow foresters, I have leaf-related advice. Keep your harvesting forest separated from the natural world by a half-dozen blocks or so, and you can clear out old leaves with a little flint and steel action. Bonus fun is had if you plant the trees close to each other, so you have a fairly solid mass of leaves all over.

Anyone got hard info on all the game changes that made it into the last patch?

Anyone figured out what to do with fishing rods yet?

As of this update, you can save them for when they have a function.

Pretend you're fishing.

I haven't tried this yet, but it looks pretty awesome:

This is the most complete info I can find.

Ah, new paintings! I'd just finished my library/gallery. Time to experiment.

Remember, Don't play with fire kids

Jesus. Reading the comments on Notch's blog make me wish for an aneurysm.

Sneaking looks like the big reveal on this patch. I think I might have to use it to make the ultimate skyway with all the stone I've been digging up on my strip mining project. Who knows? I might have to turn it into the sky canal eventually.

Does boat travel in a straight line go faster than running? I'm pretty sure it does, but haven't tested it for sure. If so, building a sky canal would be sort of like building a monorail or elevated train.
