Tiger Woods 10 Catch-All

I'm generally not one to buy ANY sports games, as I always feel the nudge of regret once the new season version hits. IF I do buy them, I usually end up with a previous season that was a relatively cheap purchase. Along those lines, I just bought a used copy of Tiger Woods 08 about a month or so ago-- seemed to me that a golf game was more or less "timeless" as far as rosters go, and I didn't think it would matter all that much gameplay-wise.

Well, my brother and I have been playing the last few weeks, and as a veteran of the TW series on the original xbox, he was pretty disgusted with how 08 plays-- too sensitive on the swing, different putting set-up, and a few other issues. I've never played any Tiger games, really, so I've been doing OK for the most part. Downloaded the TW 10 demo a week or so ago just to see how it played, and I have to say I really liked the new putting system and the real-time swing indicator they put up on the screen. Now I'm wondering if I should break with tradition and spend $60 on the new version.

Any TW experts have any advice on whether or not this is worth it?

I know i've gotten a ton of mileage out of TW 09, and I wish more Goodjers were into it. It wasn't realistic by a longshot, 350+ drives and scores of -25 or better were a regularity on anything less than Tour Pro once you got used to it, but some of the minigames (One Ball especially) and just the fun of playing online made me think it was worth it. I'll be picking up TW 10, and i'll post my impressions, speaking as someone who hadn't played a golf game since PGA Tour '96 when he got TW 09, so, grain of salt and all.

I'd like to play some online golf. That's the only thinkg keeping me from going for the Wii version. I will at the least rent TW 10. I agree that $60 is a pretty steep price to pay for a game in which the yearly "roster" is unimportant. It's kept me from buying a game since TW 07, as there never seemed to be a groundswell of online play here. Golf is definitely not a game I want to play with pubtards. So I will rent it and see how many others get on board, and figure out how much I like the game.

I don't have 07 anymore, so it may be time to add another golf game to the mix. I haven't loved a golf game since PGA 2000 from Sierra on the PC. The devs for that went on to become the TW devs. I always expected to like the TW series more than I have. But even Links was a better series.

I just played my first real golf yesterday, and was thinking I'd like to pick up TW10 if there were any GWJers to play with. I think I will take the bite. I haven't played since "Tuesday Night Links" on the old ExBoxen, with some of the old-time GWJ crowd. Those were great nights!

I buy it every year. I didn't realize they were releasing it at a sane time of year this iteration. I will probably be picking this up even though it has only been 9 months since I bought '09.

Just out of curiousity, can I ask WHY you buy the game every year?

This isn't a dig... I'm just curious. With Madden or MLB or NBA, I can see the need for updated stats and rosters, but what is it about TW that makes you buy it each year? Are you a huge PGA tour fan? Or just like to go online? Enjoy the new features?

I picked up the Wii version.

Played a few holes and some frisbee golf and some party games.

MotionPlus definitely means 100% less "flake" with the motion tracking. And it now accurately measures your wrist angle as well. You can really compare the difference given that you can play with both MP and wiimotes sans MP at the same time.

Frisbee mode is fun. It really shows off the 1v1 tracking as it immediately tracks how you are holding the "frisbee" in your hand. I bent my wrist in ways it shouldn't bend and it all tracked on screen perfectly. Overall Frisbee golf is a generic/cookie cutter extra though. Fun, but all they did is take the golf courses and add in baskets and the frisbee motion and call it good. There is frisbee in WiiSports Resort and I can't help but think that Nintendo will do it even better.

Party games seem mostly meh. Hit various targets with golf balls or play a little frisbee etc. There's some battle ball mode where you can spend a battle token and then use the wiimote to flick the ball in different directions when it is in the air thus affecting your shot or your opponent's shot. Nice idea, but first impression is it doesn't quite add up to fun. My son was trying to move my ball while I tried to move it back and we pretty much canceled each other out. The "feeling" of this wasn't great either.

Course graphics are crisp. I have barely broken the surface of all there is to do in the game. And to their credit there is an online mode even and many other options.

But, and I hate to harp on this, this is a typical EA game. Tons of options and mini-games and modes etc, but screams quantity over quality. You can do everything on paper, but the reality of everything isn't always up to snuff.

Menus could still use some more thought.

Another minor beef was the intro. The game asks too many questions of you up front. I just wanted to play.

Anyway just my first impressions. I need to put some more time into the main golf game and into motionplus.

There are usually new courses each year and the career mode is rarely the same from iteration to iteration so that is enough to keep me coming back. Plus I don't always buy them new or for the same platform. This year I might go with the Wii. I also like sports games in general.

But buying a golf game annually is kind of weird. I admit it. Over the last couple of years I've seen the time I spend on real golf courses drop due to work (lately my workload has reduced my gaming time as well). This game is an okay, but hollow substitute especially during the super low rates of Summer in Florida. Paying $60 every year for this game is still less than what I pay to play decent courses during season (November-April).

PLayed some more last night.

Frisbee is more fun with mulligans. The ability to do your throws over ad nauseum is addicting. And let's you quickly get the feel for throwing. You don't have to even wait until your previous throw has landed in order to press 2 for a mulligan.

Frisbee negatives: Physics are off in many cases and putting is too easy. It's nearly impossible to miss within 20 yards. I don't think they could figure how to model (frisbee) putting in time for this game's release. It seems that you get the same graphic when your frisbee goes in the hole no matter your shot. There is a disconnect there. But, overall, this mode shows alot of potential. And it is fun.

Golf is well golf. It works pretty much like Wii golf from what I can tell except you don't get the flakey tracking and the game instantly and smoothly measures the twist in your wrist so you can add some fade/draw. It doesn't seem that difficult to maintain a straight grip on the wiimote if you concentrate. Draw and Fade (hook/slice) are too realistic for my tastes. I really wanted to bend my shots. btw, the game measures draw/fade at the point of impact (ie wiimote straight down) when determining the draw/fade of your shot.

Another difference from WiiSports golf is the game measures your backswing. And it counts for something. If you don't backswing as much you'll reduce the the potential distance of your shot.

Putting works great. Again pretty much like WiiSports Golf except without the flakiness. AFter you aim your shot, you don't even have to look at the screen. You just need to get a feel for what constitutes a quarter swing or half swing etc. Still hate how they represent greens in golf games. The grid and moving blips. Isn't there a better way that is easier on the eyes? I think you can take off the grid though which I'll probably do. I want the more "natural" experience.

In both golf and the frisbee mode a smooth swing nets better results including distance than swinging away with all your might.

Oh it doesn't appear that you can save a game mid-round in career mode and then go play online or play other modes without deleting your saved game. It gave me a warning when I did that. I had to delete my round. Perhaps there is something I am missing here?

Another beef (from what I heard) is you have to play career mode to unlock courses. (probably not news to TW fans.) Career mode seems pretty time consuming for a player like myself who is more interested in just playing a few friends or my son here and there instead of spending months working my way through the ranks. You can shorten the length of the career events to one round at least. Maybe you can switch to 9 holes even. I didn't check. Otherwise the game could use a "mini" career mode. Shorter events, less rpg stuff, etc.

Career mode round was more exciting because of the crowd noise. There is no crowd in the "play now" mode.

If enough 360 folks get this and get a friendly tournament going every so often I may get this. Hadn't planned it, but I usually succumb when I see a deal. But I might speed this up if I see things actually taking off here (which has not been the case for several years. Back when Links was an item (and great golf game). Not to derail the thread, but man, I also wish we could get some traction going on 360 Tiger Woods multiplayer. I think its tough, mostly due to the fact that not everybody buys the new title every year, and the focus is always on the new one. This ends up really splintering any possibility of good consistent MP. The only reason i'm picking up TW10 ( I have TW9 for the 360, and still want to play it) is the fact that it's on the Wii, and it has the new Wii motion plus (plus the extra content over the 360 version).

I'm wondering if the new TW Online will be the answer for Golf multiplayer action GWJ-style, at least for those of us on PC. No more yearly iterations, and hopefully robust tournament play. I guess the pricing remains to be seen, that could make or break it.

I wish so too, speaking as 360 owner. I'm not going to sit here and gripe at everyone who has it for the Wii, I just hope a few people will get together for a XBox foursome every now and then. TW 09 was a wildly pleasant surprise for me last year, and having spent an hour with TW 10 so far, I still like it. A lot of the modes I liked are back, and they've tweaked the swing mechanics a bit to make it less easy and more realistic. And Bethpage looks wunderbar. I'm enjoying it, personally.

EDIT: At least I was, until Bethpage Black just murdered me.

Well, I suck, but the Wii version is lots of fun. I can't seem to swing properly with the remote. It's too thick to hold like a regular club, and I always end up turning my wrists. My Wii setup isn't ideal at the moment, though. That's going to change on Saturday when I move, so I might wait until then to dig into it.

Also, the Wii version seems to have all the online features one could want, except voice chat, but we have the 360 for that.

This is exactly why I'd never buy the Wii version (not that I actually, you know, OWN a Wii mind you)-- I have absolutely no desire to stand in front of my TV and "swing" a golf club. Seems like it would be amusing for a while, but I just can't see doing that for entire rounds.

Geez, i just don't know. The Wii Motion plus certainly works, but the putting, just seems too finicky. I'm wondering if i'm not more cut out for on the couch 360 play. I could see this being great party fun, though. Gotta try it out with a group and see if it hits.

I get more power consistently if I swing one-handed.

Swinging is better exercise than sitting on the couch.

But I don't think swinging away lends itself to the long in-depth career mode found in TW. Just another reason TW should have a shorter career mode.

Another annoying tick. Son and I switch game mode to 1-ball instead of STroke play. Warning screen pops up. This will change saved game information or something. Do you wish to continue? Mind you this is in "Play Now" mode. Annoying.

You know the problem with TW10 on the Wii for me is it that it is just TW10 with WiiSports Golf swing controls done smoothly and accurately.

I suppose that is a big "doh," but I guess that's what hits home after spending a few days with the game.

I just haven't been like OMG I have to play this game some more.

The closest I got to that was frisbee golf, but it mostly leaves you wishing they had put more effort into this mode. Hell they should have said this Disc Golf thing rocks. Let's make this the game and screw TW for now.

I should confess. I don't tend to like the "throw everything and kitchen sink at the wall and see what sticks" EA's method of (sports) game design. These games aren't exactly what I call "refined."

I'd much rather have a more focused and polished game of golf that perhaps even bends the rules a bit in the interest of fun while still having some decent depth in the gameplay.
