The Sims 3 Catch-All

Release Date: June 2

In case some of you don't know about The Sims (which I would be surprised if you don't), you basically play as a human in the game, known as a Sim that goes through day-to-day activities.

Anyone else anticipating this? I've been a Sims fan for as long as I can remember, but I feel a sort of skepticisim towards it. Considering the Maxis team isn't developing this one is somewhat of a scare. Then again, staff that has worked on Sims games in the past are working on Sims 3, so it may be alright.

The whole mood system is dumbed down with only 3 states. (e.g. Good, okay, bad) The personality traits and aspiration system is completely revamped. Heavy gameplay changes. I'm also disliking some of the perks, such as the Steel Bladder, which means you don't need to tend to the bladder mood any longer. It just seems too cheap.

Does anyone else find the whole game delay quite suspicious? I know that they have to tweak the game, create a marketing campaign and resolve issues with it, but I sometimes wonder, "Could this delay possibly be simply because this is a bad game, so they should advertise it more to get more people to buy it?"

Don't get me wrong, I'm expecting a wonderful game from this, but all of this could possibly add up to a disaster.

Well, you just explained why I'm actually curious in the game to be honest. All the talk about them taking out the monotony that deterred me from enjoying the previous games and making it more like other "tycoon" style games sounds appealing to me. More time shaping a human's future and less time constantly doing dishes and using the bathroom all day.

Mind you, that might make the game so different from the previous titles that it completely turns off the clearly massive amount of fans, and even those changes hasn't convinced me to buy the game, especially knowing full well it'll be sold to me piecemeal for four years. So yeah, maybe it's a horrible idea.

I would think the first rule of PR is to ignore forum people, because they vacillate between crazy and liar. - Elysium

My girlfriend is really excited about this game. Fortunately she will be getting her own computer soon so not to use my computer for non zombie killing sillyness.

I dunno, I'm looking forward to it. As kuddles said, it seems to remove the annoying issues with the Sims series and let me run my little world into the ground. The Sims isn't exactly a mind blowing series but I still pull out Sims 2 when I feel like spending an hour or two unwinding with a game that doesn't involve mass murder and/or epic world changing events. So I'll probably end up buying it pretty soon after release assuming reviews hold up reasonably well and it isn't bug-ridden. Admittedly, EA will send dozens of expansions at me afterward but that doesn't mean the original product won't be worth my money.

I'm bored of the old signature, please feel free to suggest a new one.

As with Sims1 -> Sims2, it looks pretty clear that Sims3 will be a wildly inferior game to Sims2 with the expansions. They are competing with themselves, so it's difficult for me to get excited.

We'll see where things end up, but EA had to fight that attitude with the Sims2 release, and I suspect they're trying to find the best way around it for this iteration.

They seem to be spending years/months on the new gameplay changes. The whole concept can be daring and frightening for fans like me, but I know that their goal is to have a much broader audience with this sequel and it seems to go along nicely. Of course,I haven't heard much major praise of the game from the previews I have read, but only time can tell.

(I dearly hope that I'm not spending $70 for something that will disappoint me in the end.)

No, he's been passed around EA quite a bit in the past six months, haha.

I recently read the PC Gamer review, and they seemed to love it. (92%)

I kinda wanna pick it up, but I don't know if I could forgive myself for buying a virtual dollhouse at full retail as well as for exposing myself to the temptation to buy the million inevitable expansions. I think a big part of my choosing to buy this is whether or not it will be made available on Steam.

I want it, but I always feel like I've been overcharged for the Sims. I don't really have a disposable income right now and I expect to be game system-less in about 4 months so I don't know if I could get this one. The Sims always makes me feel like I'm wasting my time, especially with all those expensive expansion packs, plus the gameplay has always gotten monotonous after a couple of families... every time I've bought it, it's required a huge amount of modifying and downloading to work on my computer, and then sometimes it doesn't work anyway. You have screwed me over too many times, Maxis.

If anything I think another delay is needed. This time just till the end of June. Why? I have an odd feeling even after the first delay we are still gonna get a quite uncooked turkey like The Sims 2 was resulting in a ton of expansions. About 50% of the Sims 2 expansions were meant to be in the original release but were cut due to technical problems or release time.

Yes I want to get the game but not only will I miss the chance to preorder my Collectors edition but there is the sad fact my parents who somehow got a hold of me are forcing me not to get it until mainly after Fathers Day. Unless I happen to win a contest or somehow come by money I did not earn. Then I'm allowed to get it.

Why is that the exception? Because the most my family ever won was around 20 dollars on a scratch off ticket.

Arg I accidently jumped off topic. Anyway Sims 3, Gonna Rock if they give it a little more time to cook. Why am I so sure it will rock? While I will miss the old bars I feel the personalities and free open world will make up for it. Along with the sims having cars from the git-go.

Games provide a world of worlds. A life away from life. Maybe one day that life away from life won't take so long to get to through loading screens.

When I played Sims 2, it held my attention only a tiny bit longer as it took for me to build my houses. The people don't really interact with the environment in a way that really interests me... at least, not the base game. Really, I get more out of Dwarf Fortress. I don't know what was included with all those silly expansions, since the base game didn't keep me coming back.

I have my pre-order in.

I'm looking forward to the "living neighborhood" thing. I always hated how I would create ancillary characters for my main ones, and then have to actually play them so they weren't jobless losers.

Anthony Gallegos talked a little bit about Sims 3 on the latest Gamespy podcast.

He said he keeps getting robbed and the robber stole his toilet. He didn't have enough money to buy a new one, so his guy took a cab downtown to go to a store to use their bathroom.

Can you make hot co-eds make out in Dwarf Fortress?

Actually, there's probably no reason to buy a new release just for that... and you can't drown your Sims anymore by removing the ladder from the pool apparently...

Actually, now that I think about, him taking a cab was probably unnecessary. The PC Gamer review talked about how the editor of the magazine created a character with an obscenely large nose who walked about town impregnating all the women he could charm. He never owned a house, preferring instead to bed with his women, and shower at the local gym.

This, my friends, is called living the dream.

I just got my copy of PC Gamer today, and it made even more excited. Give me a virtual world filled with virtual people I can toy with to my hearts desire. Make a Utopian vision of small town America, and then let loose a serial killer in it. His property will be nothing but windowless, odorless kill rooms.

But one of the many possibilities.

...And as for the "dumbing down", it's a slider option that's given you. If you want to constantly feed your Sim you can, but you could just as well not.

.......And "The quintessential casual game" is a misnomer. A casual game is something you can learn in a couple of minutes and play for a couple of minutes at a time, The Sims is neither. But hey, it's not "cool" and chicks play it, so it can't be hardcore right?

I've been playing it for about two weeks now, and it's pretty much the same. Good thing if you like it already, bad if you grow tired of watching a lazy nerd play video games.

The whole evil "plot line" my guy was going down was pretty amusing though. I enjoyed practicing World of Domination speeches in the bathroom mirror.

Yet even then we ran like the wind,

Does this arbitrarily used term bother you THAT much that you needed to bring it up in two seperate threads?

It's casual because it CAN be player for minutes or hours, but is simple to pick up and understand. It's casual because it appeals to a wide range of demographics that don't normally play more "traditional" videogames.

As the judge once famously said, "I know it when I see it."

It would seem to me, that those who feel the need to make the differentiations are the ones who are hung up on words. Nebulousness bothers me.

What's a "traditional" video game? Text-based Adventure? ASCII games? First person shooters? Side scrolling shoot-em ups? Flight Sim? City Sim? People Sim?

You can point to Monkey Island and easily say its a graphic adventure, but how about "traditional", "casual" or "hardcore"?

It seems to be nothing more than a "...pearls from the swine" set-up.
