Got my first Ethical Elk kill this morning, first shot was at about 205 feet but I only winged him and gave chase to find him stuck on a tree/bush...I debated just letting him bleed out but I thought that was kind of cruel so I put him down quickly.
Elk (M)199 5/8
Weight: 404.8 kgs (892.4 lbs)
Tracked: 11 Minutes 44 Seconds, 0.30 km (981.0 ft)
Spotted: 64.1 m (210.3 ft)
Kill Distance: 8.4 m (27.5 ft)

By the way does anyone know how you get more weapons? I've gotten the extra three from having a wardens licence but I notice that there are a lot more weapons and I cant find any info on how to get them.
Also, hangover + headphones + extremely loud rifles = pain
Edit: Also got my first turkey, my first shot I kinda overestimated the range of the shotgun
Turkey (M)65.5

Good point on the range of the shotgun. I'd imagine the pellets spread out pretty good by the time they reach 80m
I know what you mean about the sound of the gunshots. I'm usually all focused on the quiet ambient sounds, and when I fire my rifle, I usually jump in my seat.
I don't know how you get more weapons. I haven't upgraded yet, but I think I'm going to do it by the end of the month. Does anyone know when the "get 4 months for the price of three" $12.99 Warden deal ends? I looked on the website, but didn't stumble across an expiration on the deal.

I was looking through the official theHunter forums and apparently an item store is going to be opened in May, dont know anymore than that.
Grabbed myself one more Mule Deer, I actually came across him during a 1 hour track of an elk I missed that had the biggest rack i've ever seen...soooooo gutted I missed him

Time for food then more hunting, my backlog pile is going to increase in size methinks heh.
edit: Good god, just checked my lifetime statistics and i've played this for 15 hours since I started on Friday O_O
There's no other weapons currently in the game other than the 4 you get with the Warden's license. You'll no longer be able to purchase a Warden's license after April 30th. Whatever amount of time you bought for your subscription is still good, it's just nobody will be able to purchase new Warden licenses or extend their subscription after that time. At least that is what they're telling us. I wouldn't be surprised if it's availability pops up every once in a while or if they offer it as a prize for their own contests or something (just speculating though, maybe it will be gone for good).
The item store is opening May 1st and they're supposed to release more info next week about it. Assuming they're ready for release, the other weapons should be available from there. They haven't said too much about it yet, so hopefully next week we'll find out more. I'm not too thrilled about the micro-transaction model but I'll reserve judgement until I see how it works what their pricing is. I'm really hoping they don't make us rent guns (versus purchase once and you own) or have to buy bullets.

I'm not terribly thrilled about losing the 30.06 when the 4 months are up, but still having elk wandering around the island, but I, too, am waiting until the store opens up before getting too worked up about it.

Thanks for the date, Vega. When I went to log back in to The Hunter website, they have the April 30th date for the end of the Warden special on their front page. Duh
I was checking my lifetime stats after Orgun mentioned it. I've only hunter for 8+ hours. 15 is pretty impressive, although I suspect I would have been close to that this weekend if I was single!
I'm curious about their pricing model as well. I think they have a good thing going so far. I hope they come up with a way to make people feel like they're getting a good value.
I also hope they think about a fly-fishing sim that's as compelling as the hunting. I don't think there's been a really good fishing game made yet, and there's a lot of depth to fly fishing that could be a lot of fun in the right system.

Nice, if you add everyone from the GWJ list to your Friends, you can sort the Leaderboard by Friends, by animal, by score, and by range. It'd be sweet if you could also filter by gender and weight, and if you could get accuracy statistics.
Maybe that's something else I should add.
By the way, adding Friends is kind of annoying. I went to Stengar's page and clicked on his friends because he seems to have most of the people on the GWJ list. I'd click on their names from his Friends list, and there's a "Request Friend" button under their profile pic. Seemed quicker than referring to the GWJ forum page and typing in names.
I'm off for a BBQ, but I hope to get some hunting in tonight. I'll definitely be telling hunting stories while I'm drinking beer and enjoying the party

The killshot is only so close because it glitched into a tree. The initial shot was just a few seconds after I spotted it so it was closer to 375-400ft. It was bleeding enough to eventually die (I was following a blood trail, so I know it wouldn't have lasted long), but it seems once they glitch into a tree they will never drop.

I've only hunted a few elk bull, but this guy's rack was the biggest I've seen. Maybe it wasn't symmetrical or something...

Really thought that one would be special. Ah well, top ten ain't bad.
Before you can respond to this though, you must collect 12 donkey rectums. - Pyroman[FO] deflating all arguments.
I have noticed this as well, I imagine that the bleeding is based not on time from the shot, but distance travelled. That would explain why stuck deer never seem to die.
Darren, it might be a long time until someone brings in a smaller turkey
Vega, yeah, I know there are no official stats that count doe kills, but it'd be easy to add to the Leaderboard filter in case someone wants to have an unofficial doe season, or just for bragging rights if your longest shot happened to be on a doe.
Is anyone having success using the callers? I'm having mixed results. Sometimes, it seems like they ignore the call. Sometimes I'll get them coming my way, stopping and listening, but they turn and run away (maybe they saw me, or smelled me). Occassionally, I'll get them to walk really close by calling them in.
I had a kill last night that I almost lost. I was in a stand, calling the deer in, and it came out of the trees and offered me a good shot. He didn't drop immediately, and turned and ran back in the direction he came from.
I was following his tracks, but since he ran back in the direction he came from, I got confused which tracks were him coming in to the call, and which ones were after he was shot. I finally figured it out, but it was a briefly tense puzzle. I didn't want to lose the kill

Grr.. came across a grouping of like 4 different Elk tracks and got all excited. This is going to be the big one, I thought. I tracked them for a while and finally spotted the first one just ahead. Crouched down, moved a little closer, and pulled out the binoculars. A cow. Sigh, that's okay.. I'm sure the others.. then they all started coming into view. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.. a 6th! All cows.
Yesterday I decided to try something different and took the .243 and started in the southern island. Figured I'd concentrate on whitetail and forget elk for awhile as I'd heard there usually lots of whitetail about the mountain area down there. Start the game and don't take more than 5 steps out of the camp before I realize I'm in the middle of a herd of elk. I immediately drop to a crouch and they go about their business. And then I see they're all male and 2 of them have enormous racks. But I had no .30-06. Sigh.
This game mocks me.
Oh, I forgot to mention earlier, I tried out that AutoHotKey program for remapping the keys in the game and it works great. It was a little daunting at first when I first installed it and realized I had to create a script for it to use, but it's actually super easy. It even puts itself into the systray so you can right click on it and select "Suspend Hotkeys" to turn it on and off. The scripting is pretty simple once you take a look at it, here's my script:
Anyway, at least until they patch in a way to remap the keys, this little app is a pretty handy way to do it.
