Mass Effect 2 Catch All

The sequel has a teaser trailer giving some small nod to what's coming up next. But is it a fake out?! Who knows. Link.

Seems to me like moving on to a new protagonist would side-step some of the multiple path issues. Just pick one and move on!

It's an obvious fake out and probably a clue to where you start out in the game. Maybe as a captive, or as a rogue who faked his own death for the good of the galaxy or something.

I'm just happy there will be more Mass Effect. The original is close to my favorite game of this generation. Either Mass Effect or COD4.

A sick, twisted part of me is hoping that Sheperd has been assimilated into the Geth, Locutus of borg-style. The sane part of me realizes the game probably wouldn't be as fun playing as an emotionless, robot giraffe-monster.

When it comes to what I really think the trailer means... I'm with larrymadill.

While I think, in all likelihood, it could be a fake out I would actually like to see them go with a new protagonist and have Shepard be not unlike Revan was in KOTOR II (except maybe he/she is actually alive and the game pulls your save data from Mass Effect so you can meet your old character at some point). Having a new protagonist opens up the possibility of new classes (or at least differently structured ones) which after playing Mass Effect through 4 times now I would really appreciate.

If nothing else I hope our old Shepard doesn't have too much of an effect on the story. Having to play through ME1 again just to hit the right triggers for events in ME2 would be the worst sort of grind.

It would be kind of cool to import all your character choices into the world, and then have to play through in as another character and "live with" the choices your first Shepard made. And then have your old Shepard show up as a NPC cameo.

But all the talk on BioWare forums from the devs about how your characters will carry over and how you will either have kids with your mate from the first game, or cheat on them with someone new, etc etc etc still tells me it is a fake out.

I wouldn't read too much into the twist at the end, seeing how Bioware has said that ME1 save games will carry over to ME2, unless that just means things Shepard did rather than the character.

I'm checking the box next to "Fake Out" on this one. There's no way BioWare announces that you're not playing Shepard like this.

Other than that, wow, was that cool? Quite a punch in the gut. I'm really looking forward to this one.

I vote for Shepard being captured, and the game starting out with him being rescued or escaping. Of course this also means his memory likely toast due to the torture, brainwashing, and/or assimilation.

Another, distant possibility is you play as a clone of Shepard. Maybe created by Cerberus (since it's featured prominently on the ME2 official website)?

The "known alien associates" part implies to me that the theme of anti-alien prejudice is going to play a bigger role...

This is definitely among my most wanted at this point!

That and the fact that they can't mention human associates, since one of the two ended up dead in ME1.

But, depending on your decisions, one of those aliens may have ended up dead, as well.

This was my first thought. Saren started out as a Spectre, and he went rogue. It could certainly happen that a rogue Shepherd joins up with the Geth and tries to take over the galaxy, especially given some of the possible decisions in the first game.

To be honest, I don't give two hoots how they spin it - I loved the first game. Not so much for the gameplay as much as the richness of the universe. It tickled my scifi gland good and proper.

I did pick up the Mass Effect novel, and suffice to say that Iain Banks needn't start worring about the competition.

I know Certis admitted to reading the first book and I did as well. I thought it was pretty good for extended universe fiction. I was surprised to see more had been released the last time I was at Borders. Keep meaning to pick it up.

Cerberus are the baddies in the second Mass Effect book, Ascension. It would definitely makes sense for them to be more prominently featured. Given that you have to level up your character, it would make some sense for them to have you playing someone other than Shepard. You could still interact with the sidekicks from the first game. I'd miss Wrex if he wasn't in ME2.

My wild stab in the dark would be that Udina became president, Cerberus got to him (or he was already with them) and now the protagonist is on the run from the council who have developed anti-alien policies and recruited the Geth to help them. That would match the overall three-act structure for each game

I really want to continue the story with Shepherd and the crew I had in one but I realise it's tricky. I could live with a new character.

Yeah. It would give them a chance to make all the classes viable.

So would I.

I liked Tali as a character. Her accent was great.

Maybe Shepard is captured and brainwashed into turning geth, so the player has to first find him behind enemy lines and then use that Asari chick to return his memories to him (maybe she got them during the mind meld they did). It will be Mass Effect 2: The Search for Spock . . . err, I mean Shepard.

All of this talk makes me want to bag on my feeble attempts at playing through Fable 2 and go buy Mass Effect again. My local game store has it for like $15. So excited.

So if the first book was bad, how is the second book, really?

Shepard as a Geth double agent would be cool.

Start the game captured, agree to work for them, gain their trust, then reveal it was all a setup.

I'm doubtful that the Geth could be fooled like that and that they would be accepting of Shepard without some sort of crazy storyline twist.

Remember that the geth in the trailer had a Human Alliance design on it (The N7 design, specifically). This led me to assume that you would be fighting against the Alliance High Command in some form. The Mass effect Wiki lists "N7" as meaning Alliance Special Forces, Highest Level.

Finished Mass Effect today, I get the feeling I could have delved deepeer into the backstories of the other crew members (Tali, the human guy, Garrus, etc) but somehow the game didn't impose me anything so I put my efforts on getting into Liana's pants. I'll probably play it again and try a really evil redheaded bombshell this time. I hardly ever go the evil route on rpgs, but I would like to give it a try with this one (notable exception Oblivion and the dark brotherhood quest)

I think EA already hinted at Mass Effect 2 PC being around the same time as the 360 version this time around.
