Awesome DS Game: Retro Game Challenge
I don't have much time to type this out before I go to sleep, but I just had to start a thread dedicated to this great new game.
It's based off this Japanese videogame show:
http://www.veoh.com/collection/gamecentercx/watch/v1434248968K7BR3z
Arino-san plays old NES/Famicom games and tries to beat arbitrary challenges. Very amusing stuff, and yes, I only just discovered this whole thing because of the game.
In the game, Arino is messing with you and sends you back to the 80s to play Famicom games with his younger self. The "80s Famicom" games are actually brand new games designed after classic retro games, and the game environment simulates a kid's bedroom in 1980s Japan-- there's a magazine shelf you can access for hints and articles on the games, a shelf full of cartridges and manuals, and a ton of other atmosphere (the "TV" is on the top screen, and the view of the kid's room is on the bottom screen). For each game, you're given certain challenges to beat. Once you beat all four, you unlock the game for "Freeplay" and move on to the next cartridge.
Anyway, if you haven't heard of this game before, you SERIOUSLY need to check it out.

I was just about to start a thread on this game. It looks rather amazing. The 10+ hour DQII clone is enough to make me seek this one out.
*oh!* A question for anyone with this game - does it follow an actual story arc? Lots of games within the game appeals to me, but I couldn't quite figure out if there was any progress made toward an actual completion or just unlocking more stuff.

I remember this game mentioned (and loved) by Chris Kohler in Wired. Seems I need to get it. Meanwhile, a fun admission from one of the models for game characters - Dan "Shoe" Hsu.

I've been waiting for this game forever. My town is so sh*tty than it still hasn't shown up here. It's frustrating as hell. That's all I have to say on that.

I'm glad this is on somebody else's radar. Between this and Deadly Creatures and Onechanbara and Flower, lots of little sleeper hits I've been interested in are all dropping at once...

I picked this up a few days ago but only had a chance to play it. Great stuff so far! I love the fact that it weaves a bit of a story into everything; so often a feeling of progression of any kind toward an ultimate goal is absent from 'collections', and here it has just enough of one (including chatting, reading magazines, etc.) to keep me going.
I'm stuck on the 3rd challenge of the 2nd game right now; dang my 8-bit skills have atrophied!

I'm looking forward to picking this up sometime in the future. It's funny to me that this came out at about the same time as the recent Sega Collection because they've both got me reminiscing about the gaming days of my youth pretty hard.
Right now I don't play my DS enough for me to rush out and buy many titles, but I put them in my Amazon shopping list so that I can monitor them for price drops. My DS has been getting treated a lot my my GBA... tons of stockpiled games (esp. RPGs and strategy games) just hanging out as part of the 'everlasting library'. Something about the portables keeps me picking up titles... I suppose it's because the appeal of the games today doesn't really hinge on graphics, so I know that years down the line the games will still hold the same pull for me.
This is definitely on my list.

So far, I'm on the fourth game (Star Prince), meaning I've beat the four challenges for each of the previous three games. Ninja Haggle Man isn't too hard... just keep plugging. If you haven't figured it out by now, every time you go into a door, any doors of the same color also close (which smash the enemies). you can get it set up so that 6-8 or so doors are all the same color (go in order through A, B, C, D, etc.) and then smash away. Otherwise, just ninja-star the hell out of them and jump on their heads.

Yep I finally got through the 3rd one this afternoon; I found that the trick of repairing by venturing through the doors backwards to be quite handy.
Made it to level 8 and then my battery died yarrrrgh. I'l recharge that bad boy and give it another go.

(Sorry that I made a new thread, posting that content here to bring it all together.)
I've just started to play Retro Game Challenge on DS and its captured the feeling of being a kid playing games with friends and looking up cheats. I grew up in the 90's, not the 80's and with PC games, not console games, but Retro Games Challenge is making me feel like I'm playing games with some buddies, something I haven't done in person for a while.
Playing the games, while listening to the buddy cheer me on and then reading the dialogue where his mother says she'll bring us snacks brings back those memories of playing a game as a kid. I suggest everyone check it out. This is what I enjoy so much about games and playing on the internet will never be as much fun as running across the street to my friend's house to play some new games late into the night.
Ooh, it's finally out now?! Eeeeeee I'm excited.

I'm still waiting... I had to make my purchase inside the Intertubes. Won't see the game for another week. I am currently hating everyone else in this thread.

Yep that's been one of my favorite parts of the game so far. A little bit of nostalgic inducement can go a long way.
[({(wavy lines)})]
Sitting around with my cousin in the basement of his tiny Michigan house, playing Dragon Warrior IV, Destiny of an Emperor & Gemfire and slurping down egg noodles and popcorn after everyone else had gone to sleep; good times, good times.
The magazines have been fun to read too; I have a moderately sized collection of late 80's/early 90's gaming magazines and so far the period writing voice in the game is spot on.

Somehow, magically, the game came in today. I only played through the first two games' challenges, but holy crap. I love everything about it so far. And now I love everyone in this thread. You know what that means. Everyone take your pants off!
I love how it starts with an explanation that any resemblance to real people is purely coincidental, then cuts to a picture of the host of Game Center CX.
I also love what happens when you sit on Cosmic Gate's title screen long enough. It's a touching tale of the need to defeat "HUMANY'S MOST DEADLIER ENEMYS!"

Congratulations on the magically unexpected premature delivery.
Today I finished the Rally King one after several tries. It reminded me a bit of R.C. Pro-am. I usually managed to drift boost myself straight into a wall, but I finally got through it.
Oooh, Star Prince! Kind of looking like a high-power Xevious so far.
I hope this bad boy sells enough to warrant a sequel; I'd love to see them tackle some Genesis/SNES 16-bit love.

Currently pantless as I write this.
I completed three challenges so far and I'm enjoying it. My only issue is the dialogue. I want to smack this kid with an NES controller for talking so much. Just let me play!

Holy sex beasts!
I'm doing the Guadia Quest challenges now. The only complaint I have so far for all of Retro Game Challenge is that super old RPGs were not very user friendly. Buying equipment and using new items and magic spells is an exercise in mildly annoying trial and error. Still, awesome game. I was going to play The Lost and Damned today, but I still haven't started it thanks to Arino's bullsh*t.
I love that one of the special extra features of Rally King SP is in-game advertisements.

Been watching some of the real show's challenges on youtube.....it's hilarious!
My favorite segments so far have been when the host takes on a romance game for girls by Koei and when he tackles Beat Takeshi's game (from the host of Takeshi's Castle....aka Most Extreme Elimination Challenge in the US) (2-part episode).
Can't wait to get this for the DS!

Oh hell yes... that Beat Takeshi game was just pure insanity! Just sit there exposing the "note" to sunlight for an hour-- a real in-game hour! One thing, though-- why did the Famicom allow karaoke while the NES gave us R.O.B.?

I'd be down for some fake Tetris. I cleared the 200 lines in Tetris DS just a short while ago, and while it's a little easier than Gameboy Tetris, I was still pretty proud of myself.
Have you been responding to kid Arino honestly? He thinks I'm a cocky bastard.
I've been mostly honest with the boy so far. Yeah, I thought it was pretty cool that he won that contest, so I told him as such. I'm hoping he'll open up on how he gets all this scratch to buy new games + controllers at his age; I'm in my 30's and I STILL have to mind my pennies when it comes time for a new game/upgrade. Dang!
