Halo Wars Catch-All

It looks like the Demo is out and so far the comments that I have read are that it is actually pretty good. I have always played my RTS games on PC but I'm curious about this one. It's too bad that it had to be Ensemble Studios last hurrah. Hopefully it will be a good one!
The demo is over a GB and includes 2 campaign missions and a skirmish mode. The skirmish mode is where you supposed to be able to dig into the meat of the game. I have it queued up on xbox.com to start downloading when I get home from work. I hope to post some impressions tomorrow (If Dawn of War II doesn't steal the spotlight tonight).

I played a bit of it. The controls work fine for a console RTS and they seem simple enough. The mechanics though seem very C&C-ish. Essentially build a lot of dudes, ram them up against other dudes, get them killed, rinse and repeat. All in all though better than I expected. I might actually pick it up.

That doesn't sound too promising. I was hoping for more of a Company of Heroes type gameplay. Do the units die ridiculously fast like the do in C&C?

I'm definitely picking this up as soon as possible. All the videos of it looked surprisingly intuitive and cool.

From the campaign the units seemed fairly hardy, and there are cover spots on the map to help infantry. Seemed pretty good for a console RTS, with my biggest initial gripe being a fairly limited ability to zoom out.
Very pretty and lengthy cut scenes with the demo for those who like the Halo universe.

Nah not for me.
1) I have even less desire to play a RTS with a controller than I do a FPS*
2) I have no interest whatsoever in the Halo Universe. Especially if the Flood are in it.
*Granted as I say that I am downloading the demo of Killzone 2, but I don't really have any other choice for that one

I've never been very interested in Halo, and I'm not particularly good at RTS games, but this looks interesting enough that I'll give the demo a try when it's available to Silver members.
It looks like StarCraft with the Protoss lopped out, so I'm worried that it will lack depth. However, it looks like it would be fun and intuitive, and I appreciate that they've taken out a lot of the resource micromanaging. Also, it's neat to see air battles that take place in the actual air instead of hovering twenty feet above the ground.
My Latest: Insufficient Resources and Hands in the Dark
Not quite as fast, but there doesn't seem to be a great penalty for just sending out charge after charge of the Light Brigade to get slaughtered either, so definitely not like CoH or Dawn of War 2.

I like the music and the cutscenes. Why is there a RTS attached to the content I'd purchase?
Didn't have any problems with the controls or interface, but the prospect of making and moving little dudes remains as unexciting as ever. That hasn't been really all that entertaining since Red Alert, my first RTS.
The best bits of the strategy/tactics spectrum are at the extremes. I feel like these games would be more fun if I were either more in control, but also more focused, like Full Spectrum Warrior; or less in control with a broader focus, like Dwarf Fortress. The traditional RTS compromise misses the good parts and picks up the baggage of each type of game.
You can pause the cutscenes as well as skip them. Is that a completely new thing? I haven't played a game where I've noticed it before, but now that I have I'm certain every game from now on needs this.

It's not as common as it should be, but yes, a lot of games let you pause during cutscenes nowadays.

I enjoyed the demo. The controls worked pretty well, the only time I really wanted a mouse is when I had a big group of units and I wanted to quickly select one of them and use its special ability.
Yeah, I was worried it was going to be shallow but I was pleasantly surprised with how many units and upgrades there are, not that the numbers necessarily make the game deep, but certainly not overly simple. There also seem to be 3 commander types you can choose before the game (in multiplayer) but the demo only allowed 1 for each race.

Seems ok for a "my first RTS" type game. It's very simple, units are all straight forward, tactics are basic and it's really doing nothing that hasn't been standard to the genre since say, 2001. If you don't play these games and want to give one a try then it's certainly worth a look. If you are a strategy game fan then I can't imagine this having any appeal over DoW 2 which comes out at roughly the same time.
My days of not taking you seriously have certainly come to a middle.

I was impressed by the demo. It controls well, although I wish there was an option to select one type of unit on screen (although that may be in there, as I didn't play the advanced tutorial).
It's kinda cheesy that you can destroy a base by only destroying the main part of it, though. That might lead to some problems in multiplayer matches.
It's not going to replace Dawn of War II for me, but I'll have some fun with the single player.

I imagine this is like any RTS demo, you get 1/3rd of the units for 1/3rd of the fun.
No plans on getting this unless they manage to capture some of the hectic Halo gameplay, and I don't mean the sights and sounds. I mean sniping some poor bastard in the head who just rocketed your buddies in the warthog who just ran over some other guy who just stuck you with a plasma grenade.

I am still puzzled, why this is not a GFW Live title. I think that is the wrong term, Microsoft has been rather candid why their top 360 games are not, but still, why?

Building bases? Blech.
F*ck.
I don't know why but I was really hoping for Myth in the Haloverse rather than gather/build/attack nonsense. I should have known.

Not really. There's pre-assigned spots. You juts pick the building you need at a given time on an empty spot and off it goes.
They removed most of the resource stuff too. I'm pretty sure two power plants can get you all the power you need for everything, and the only other resource is the supply thing, which is just a structure. And there's bits of it here and there scattered around the map, but you just park a unit on it for a few seconds and generally you've picked it all up.
I spent most of my time focusing on tactics and using unit special abilities.
I had fun with it.

Having to spend time mucking around with peasants and robots for resource gathering is what has really put me off to RTS games. I feel like I spend too much time micromanaging the resource gathering and not enough time in the battle. It sounds like this game trades that in at the cost of a bit less complexity in the strategies; it could be fun.
My Latest: Insufficient Resources and Hands in the Dark
That is exactly what they've done.
I do still wish it was a PC game though. It works pretty well with the 360 controller, but it would be leagues better with a mouse and keyboard.

I just tried the demo out and it was fun.
Did I miss something in the tutorial about how to assign units to control groups? I played around with the controls afterwards and wasn't able to do it.

I never figured that out either.
Double clicking a unit will select all on-screen units of that type, and you can use the right trigger (I think) to slide through all the individual unit types in a selected group and give separate orders that way too, but I never saw anything about control groups.

I just gave the demo a go this evening and damn, what a fun little title. I wasn't even seriously watching Halo Wars, but the demo showed up on Live so I figured, "Why the heck not?".
I'm quite smitten based on what I've seen so far. Sure, it's RTS-lite, but I think it's a perfect fit and speed for the console. Controls are quick and streamlined, the combat-action fast and the engine performance smooth as butter (so far, at least). It gives the whole experience a very arcade-like feel.
Now I'm not the biggest Halo fan, as I know there's better shooters out there on both console and PC, but seeing the universe explored in a whole new game genre is actually really fresh. It makes me excited about the material again much like the first Halo game felt way back when on Xbox.
I suspected myself that the typical frat-boy Halo audience would not take to Halo Wars and that the project was likely doomed, but I'm wondering if the streamlined RTS experience might just catch hold with more casual gamers who are drawn in by the name, yet might just stay for the friendly execution.
Am I actually considering pre-ordering this game? Hell, I couldn't even be bothered to finish the sp campaign in Halo 2 & 3 (both of which I own), but this short demo of Halo Wars has got me completely jazzed.
EDIT:
Just had to add that the graphics are freakin' dope in this game. There's a great use of lighting on this thing and it makes the models really "pop". Awesome cut-scenes too.

Add me to the "I'm surprised that this is quite fun" list. It helps a lot that it's a famous universe with awesome music, too.

Agreed. It is in no way going to replace any other RTS for me. But it does seem to be a fun, simple game.

I've been playing a lot of Company of Heroes as of late and so Halo Wars seemed pretty mindless in comparison. I know that's unfair given the tack of a PC RTS versus a console RTS but with all of the other solid titles I'm still catching up on in 360 land, I think this one is a pass.
That and shouldn't the Spartans kick way more ass? Have like a "Blow up tank" special ability? All they did was hop in a Warthog.

They do have the, "I like that tank, I think I'll take it." special ability.

I'm pretty addicted to the Demo at the moment, but I'm not very experienced at RTSes (PC crowd flame away). My experience with Skirmish on Heroic right now is:
Build up base pretty well.
Take over nearby base, too.
Fend off minor Covenant attacks easily.
Get swatted away by Covenant base.
Base(s) get trounced by massive Covenant force resembling the Normandy invasion (with extra walking tanks).
I've been focusing on Scorpions and Warthogs with upgrades, base defense, and some Spartans. What am I missing? Halp!
XBL: CptGlanton
PSN: CaptainGlanton
You're missing the infantry. Cheap and very effective. At your main base I reccommend 1 power, 1 barracks and the rest supply. Build another power and the vehicle stations at the second base. Supply is huge in this game. Being able to pump out hundreds of cheap infantry is the key.

Will try. Thanks!
Edit: It worked.
This game is sliding way up my list for the spring. I can't believe the Halo Wars demo knocked the snot out of the RE5 demo.

The demo is fun, I'm not much into RTS, not by a long shot. That LotR game on the 360 was unenjoyable, maybe it's the story (or lack of) and familiarity of characters?
