Hi GWJ people. I'm not sure how many people around here are into LOST, but I figured some are since it's a sci-fi thing, which seems to have a high coloration with gaming. This post is spoiler free, so no worries.

I was curious if anyone had any interesting theories about the show whether they are overall main plot theories or smaller side theories, or just any other comments about the show.

EW.com has some interesting interviews with the producers. They are spoiler free. They are mostly the producers talking about the past seasons and the viewers top 5 favorite episodes. http://www.ew.com/ew/package/0,,1550612_20245764,00.html?bcpid=4396297001 I think there are 5 up. that is the link to the first one.

Anyway, I can't wait for tomorrow. Hope to be back here with more after the premiere.

I missed a string of episodes back in season 2 and became too horribly lost (I kill me!) to have any idea what was going on. Is there a cliffnotes/synopsis floating around anywhere?

This link is a quick overview of Seasons 1-3. There will be a review of all the seasons (but mostly season 4) the hour before the premiere. Combined you could be mostly caught up. I would still recommend going back to watch the other seasons though because they are awesome.

Agree. They've been pretty explicit about it since around the middle of season 3.

Here's the review I read and here's the relevant piece:

Possible spoilers wrote:
Translation: This series just took a roller-coaster hairpin of a turn. If the latter stages of Season 3 and all of Season 4 marked a course correction to the confusion that preceded it, the writers have apparently tired of making you feel comfortable in your grasp of what's happening. When Jack (Matthew Fox) says, wearily, "How did we get here? How did all of this happen?," you half expect the Talking Heads to be playing "Once in a Lifetime" in the background. Time has been "dislodged" in Season 5, and the operative words are not "Where are we?" but "When are we?" Seriously. They say that.

The essential story lines remain in place - the six people who got off the island want (and need) to go back. When we last saw Ben and Jack, they were looking at Locke (Terry O'Quinn), very much dead in a coffin in Los Angeles. Locke is alive on the island, however. And Ben is trying to put the world, or at least the island, to right. If this sounds like insanity, then you haven't been watching. If this makes sense, then congratulations on being caught up, but it's all about to go - what's the word? - insane. Season 5 starts three years after the end of Season 4. Although it seems as if every precious little hint is some kind of spoiler for "Lost" fans, and there's no joy in giving away any of the ingenious twists, setting up the structure is essential.

A lot can happen in three years. But as only "Lost" can, the series makes that point seem moot early on. There's so much time-shifting and characters from the past meeting characters from the present that time itself becomes Dali-esque.

This has the potential to either work or be very ridiculous to the point where people start turning it off out of spite.

But it was never done to this extent; one or two episodes, maybe, but not the core of the season. This whole "shattered in time" bit reminds me of a Star Trek: Voyager episode, and you all know how I loathe that show with a passion.

Hmm. So, now, Adam and Eve really could be anyone on the island. That would be a nice way to tie season 1 into all of this.

It's important to remember that even though there is time travel, one can't change history. I'm really curious to see how that plays out.

Was there any ARG between season 4 and the new one?

Anyway, I'm really looking forward to the new episodes. I was ready to give up on the show by the middle of the season 3. There wasn't really any progress in the plot, and Jack, Kate and Sawyer being imprisoned for the first ten episodes or so simply wasn't that interesting. But then the pace increased, and so did the overall quality of Lost again. I also enjoyed the switch to flashforwards in season 4 since they really had run out of ideas for the background of the characters.

I think mid season 3 was right around the time when they negotiated an end date for the show. It allowed them to not have to stall anymore.

There was some ARG stuff. I didn't really do much off it, but it was connected to Dharma recruiting again and need volunteers.

Great. Episode.

Michael Emmerson: Great actor or greatest actor?

Hurley's summary of the show's events:

Quote:
"Okay. See, we did crash. But it was on this crazy island. I mean, we waited for rescue, and there wasn't a rescue. And there was a smoke monster. And then there were other people on the island - we called them the Others, and they started attacking us. And we found some hatches and there was a button you had to push every 108 minutes or - well, I was never really clear on that. But - the Others didn't have anything to do with the hatches, that was the Dharma Initiative. They were all dead - the Others killed them. And now they're trying to kill us. And then we teamed up with the Others because some worse people were coming on a freighter. Desmond's girlfriend's father sent them to kill us. So we stole their helicopter and we flew it to their freighter, but it blew up. And we couldn't go back to the island, because it disappeared. So then we crashed into the ocean, and we floated there for a while, until a boat came and picked us up. And by then there were six of us. That part was true."

So if, say, Jack and Kate are "Adam" and "Eve" they have to die. There is no stopping it.

Also, it appears that Hurley has Miles' power and can communicate with the dead. I wonder if Jacob is dead. He does hang out with Claire and Christian Shephard.

This could explain Richard Alpert's uncanny ability to never age. But, how does Mikhail keep coming back from the dead (even though he hasn't, after being blowed up by Charlie)?

If you cannot change history, how was Desmond able to go to Oxford while he was time traveling in 'The Constant'. Is Desmond's time travel not directly related to the island? Desmond didn't physically go back in time did he? Just mentally. hrmm.

Questions questions questions.

I don't know if Miles power is the same as what is happening to Hurley. Hurley seems to have a connection to the island so the island can make people appear to him. Miles seems to be able to see and talk to all dead people (and animals). I don't think Mikhail ever came back from the dead. I think he just never died. the island wouldn't let him die until it was time (like with michael).

Daniel said Desmond was special and the rules didn't apply to him.

A great start to the season, so far. I was hesitant when I heard that they were abandoning the personal flashbacks/forwards for this season... but with all the time jumping it would have become impossible to keep anything straight. As for the time travel- they're handling it really well. Though I have always loved any time-travel based story whether in Lost or other series/books/etc, so I may be biased. I mean really, what's with the temporal hating, people? In the words of Doc Brown, You've GOT to THINK in four DIMENSIONS!

Desmond was in the hatch, mere inches away from the electromagnetic anomaly the thing was sitting on top of, when it exploded. This altered him in some way which is why he became unstuck in time while leaving the island in "The Constant," traveling back and forth along his own timeline. He was able to change things because he was experiencing the two timelines at the same time- regardless of what year it was it was still his "present day." The Losties are unstuck in time but not in the same way that Desmond was, they aren't traveling through their own timelines- they're traveling through the island's timeline. Any effect that they've had on the island's history was already factored in before they started time traveling. I.E.: the events that led up to their current predicament include the results of their present and future time travel. They can't change things anymore because their actions while time traveling are already part of the island's history.

Now that I've had a little time to digest the episodes I have one big question. Everyone on the island traveled with it except Richard and the Others. Locke was with them and then they were gone. Richard later showed up and he seemed to have knowledge of what the island was doing and what was going to happen. I imagine this is connected to Richard not aging, but I'm not sure how or why all the others could be the same. Why?

Fun for a girl or a boy.
MechaSlinky's picture

It's possible that at least Richard is able to move through time mostly at will.

It's also possible that the entire season won't consist of the people on the island moving through time all crazy-like, as it would get old soon enough and could greatly reduce the amount of real story to be told.

It's extremely possible that the Lost writers aren't complete f*cking hacks like the Heroes writers and will be able to deal with time travel in an entertaining way that keeps all the rules consistent and isn't filled with copious amounts of f*cking stupid.

It's ultra-ridiculously possible that now that the always perfect Lost is back on TV, I won't be able to sit through the garbage heap that is Heroes any more.

I loved last night's episode. I think the time travel aspect is being done very well. I'm really interested to see how the new guys (mainly Miles and Dan) work with the Losties. Miles and the boar was pretty cool. I think the season is primed to be exciting and will answer many questions about the history of the island. I'm buckling my seat belt for a crazy Lost roller coaster of awesome. I just hope that it is a great ride.

I'm stoked for this new season i have been an avid fan since near the begining i think the time shifting is an awesome idea if done properly and i think faraday is gonna be a huuuge part of this i cant wait to see how the hurley/sayid events play out i would like to know more on the jacob thing it has been killing me since they introduced the cabin and the neverending tree chopping guy lol forgot his name and i also think desmond is not affected because a) he was not on the plane b) the whole seeing the future events may have changed it so he is immune to the shifting c)he's desmond im in this till the end keep it up and namaste

Wow, uh, I don't want to be that guy, but you should probably check out the code of conduct thread. http://www.gamerswithjobs.com/node/38063.

On topic, great episode. Was Frogurt wearing a red shirt by any chance?

I was under the impression that Desmond has a special relationship to the Island Time-Weirdness because of his exposure to the Hatch magnetic-anomaly overload at the end of season 2.

My current (unfounded) theory about the "Natives" not time traveling is because they are somehow part of the island so they would not shift any more than the rocks and the trees would. No proof but it feels right to me for now.

Richard had knowledge given to him by Locke at some point in Richards past but in Locke's future. That is why he told Locke that the next time they meet he would not recognize him and gave him the compass to give to himself in Locke's future.
