Need Advice on PS3 (already purchased)

I don't know what it is about me, but whenever I buy anything there is usually a catch of some kind. This is one such case.

Living in Thailand, I recently purchased the Asia Edition of the PS3 (yes there is such a thing), but when signing up for the Playstation Network Thailand was not available as a country selection so I chose Australia (my country of Origin). Everything was fine until (you knew this was coming right?) I tried to buy something from the Playstation Store. My billing address was pulled from my Playstation Network account and it is not possible to change it. I tried processing it anyway, but as I feared it failed.

What I have so far discovered from my emails to PSN support staff in Australia and Hong Kong (still waiting on Sony Thailand) is that only credit cards issued in the country your account is registered in can be used (my CC was issued in Thailand). Apparently there is a message on the screen when you select your country when signing up for PSN that says it can't be changed but as I am on a SD-TV it was illegible and had I been able to ready it, there is no mention of what limitations your selection imposes. PSN HK Support also informed me that the PS3 hasn't been officially released in Thailand.

I am a pedant, I know this about myself, but I'm also a realist - in a developed country I could do a bit of pushing and just return it, but this is Thailand. Returning it isn't going to happen (especially as they don't seem to have officially released it here). So I'm left with a PS3 and a problem. There are lots of cool games on the PSStore that I would like to buy so I'm putting this out there in the hope that someone on here can, lend some sage advice, point me in a direction that will help, or put me out of my misery (though I'd prefer the former options).

Thanks for reading.

PS I don't know why everyone's hating on Home, I can see a lot of (unfulfilled) potential there.

I can barely contain my lack of enthusiasm.

Only thing I can say is that whole situation sounds awfully lot like... Poland

You could potentially setup a psn account with more correct info, or you could try & get ahold of PSN cards instead of using your credit card.

Right on, You can have multiple accounts for PSN and they can be from different regions, which is useful for demos from other regions. But that probably won't help because your billing address will forever be in a non-supported region until they officially recognize Thailand.

Trueheart's second suggestion is the easiest solution I've heard of. Find someone in the region you are locked to (I believe that's Europe in the case of Australia) or set up a new account with a different region (like Japan or US) and then have someone in that region purchase PSN cards and e-mail you the codes. It's a bit of a hassle but I'm sure there are plenty of people in this community who would be willing to help you out.

EDIT TO ADD:

There are also automated sites out there set up to allow you to import PSN cards from various regions, but I have no experience with them so I can't speak to their effectiveness.

Thanks for all the good advice and it makes me feel a teensy bit better knowing I'm not the only one.

I definitely recommend trying cards, I use them almost exclusively since my credit card is maxed 90% of the time.

I started looking at where I might get some of these psn cards and am now hesitant to use them. Apparently there are cards specific to each region/store and, most importantly, I fear that should they ever permit me to select Thailand as my country I will lose access to anything I purchased on the Australian PS Store.

Honestly, I don't understand why they've organised it like this.

It's rights issues based on territory. We have similar issues here and I know that when Australia launched Xbox live most owners who were registered in the US or the UK just left that intact.

I'm not too sure how PSN works, but with the Xbox different IDs on one machine have access to all content on the machine. so maybe if you ever can switch to Thailand then leave your current ID as is and start a new one. Unfortunately you'll lose trophies but that isn't a big deal.

I'm struggling to find a company who sells the Australian PSN cards online. Does anyone know a site that does it? I've found plenty of sites offering the US PSN cards for incredibly marked up prices (50%+). I'm not that desperate for them (yet).

This whole experience really sours me on Sony. I like the PS3, but how hard do they have to make it for me and others in a similar situation to give them my money? I can subscribe to their MMO's just fine with my credit card, but using the same card on their PS Store is a big no-no? I can't even find anyone in Sony who is willing to help me! I've tried Sony Australia, Hong Kong, USA, and Thailand, but they all keep pushing me to someone else. It's seriously f*cked, for want of a better word, and that is the sign that I am really getting pissed off with them.

I've met this sort of problem previously with Turbine, who refused to let me buy the digital download of Lotro because I live in Thailand! In that case at least there was a way around the problem, even if it was a pain in the arse.

What is it with companies who pretend to be international, but want to sweep under the carpet their collosal failures to be so?

Well the one way you could try is buying prepaid visa giftcards and trying that

At least that's how I buy anything on the PSN store.

I've given up trying to do everything using the Australian PSN, so I created an account with a US address. Thanks for the idea about the prepaid visa giftcards!

sorry to admit; skimmed through most posts... hehe.

I have the same problem, Sony hasn't added Mexico the countries where you can create an account, and hence can purchase with a local Credit Card. So far, I've asked friends that live in the US to send me the PSN prepurchase card codes to buy content.

I've also contacted Sony to address them on my inconformity. I haven't received a response yet.

Most posts seem to give similar advice, but as you say; it does help to see I'm not the only one screwed by Sony's limited vision of business.

I just bought a PS3, couldn't find a thread that suited my question better so I went with this one.

I've got a couple of questions, first of all, what Madden game should I be getting considering the older the cheaper, probably don't want to go older that 08 though?

I'm also looking for great local multiplayer games, I'm still hoping for Hoard to get an Australian PSN release, and plan to get Little Big Planet 2 and Fat Princess. What else should I be looking at?

Give these threads a shot, they might already have some suggestions...

This is a pretty general recommendation thread.
There is also this one.
