So, on Twitter this morning, I mentioned that I wanted to hop back on the weight-loss wagon in the near future. I've always had problems doing this by myself, because I'd have a bad week and get frustrated.

However, I'm very competitive (surprise, I'm a gamer after all), and while I'd love to win $250K for losing weight, I'm not getting on TV over this. So, I'd like to submit the germ of the idea to you folks on the board, and come up with a collective competition/cheering-on thread for those of us who are a little, shall we say, fluffy?

I'd like to find out who'd be interested in doing this, and come up with ways to make this a real competition, so we're all pushing one another to get healthy, lose weight, and get in shape. Who's with me?

Edit: Thanks to The Fly, we now have a Google Docs spreadsheet! PM him with your e-mail address to be able to view and edit it to add your information.

I actually just re-started my program for health on Monday. Soft, yes, but my heart and health need the extra healthiness. I think that if there are enough of us weeble-wobbles, we could get on that show! "Soft bellied gamers with jobs" or something.

Like I said in Twitter, I'm with you! Although I will most likely gain weight from this experiment rather than lose weight.

Anyway, I'm trying to brainstorm here so I apologize if this post is a little unstructured.

Does the site still have the threads that allow anyone to edit? It might work to have everyone who's participating listed on there so they can update (weekly?) with their current weight, types of exercise done, calories burned/consumed, eating habits, etc. If not, someone will have to maintain the thread quite often.

Would there be a time limit? Maybe 6 months?

That's all I can think of right now.

So far keeping it together's been enough

I'm up for it! I started walking a few weeks ago, but then fell off. So if this gets me on a program, and I stay there, all the better.

I'd be up for this too as I've been trying to lose weight for a while. I did start walking again when I moved but it appears that this year, we're going to skip Fall in this area and go straight to stupid Winter which kind of screws that. Some kind of competitive thing would be cool though as it could help motivate me to figure out an alternative.

I would definitely be interested in this. I will begin fluffing up so as to shrink faster (take that, losers!).

We could do something fairly simple. Dependent on how many competitors we get, we could all chip in to buy the winner something. Either a game ($60 / 12 people = $5 per smallest loser) or a console/video card ($400 / 12 people = $33.33 per smallest loser) or something negotiable like a gift card and we all agree to put $X towards it. The more people we have, the more the winner (or top 2-3 winners) get.

Edit: I've got it! Everyone paypal me $500 and then when we're all done, I'll give the winner $1,000!

Talk to me when I started college and I would have won that money hands down. I went from 240 pounds in high school to a scary 128. I had to gain the 30 or 40 I have now to be a comfortable 32 inch waist and not needing a belt for 28s or 30s.

Yet even then we ran like the wind,
whilst our laughter echoed under cerulean skies...

Odd that this topic just came up since I'm on a strict excercise/diet for getting into shape for the police academy. In Jan. of 2007 I weighed 339lbs at 5'10". I started working out as a new years resolution and am sitting here now at 255lbs. Most of this was due to the wife losing weight and the realization that if I were ever going to get my dream of being a cop then I was going to have to change.

I go to Bally's mon, tues, thur and fri. and my diet for the last few months because of the cop thing has been a big green apple for breakfast. A Lean Cuisine for lunch and whatever I want for dinner.

The only advice I can offer is find a friend to work out with. Other than that just have a goal of what you want and reach it. Sounds funny but when I started I couldn't run on a treadmill for more than 3 minutes but you just increase your goal everyday. Just over a year later and I run 2.5 miles four days a week.

If there are andy Goodjers in the Troy, Michigan area I would be more than happy to go work out with ya.

I would throw down for this as well. Literally set up prize tiers and start dividing what it would cost.

Sign me up!

I set a certain weight loss goal about a month back and I'm 6 lbs away from reaching it!

To start off, I cook my food in a much healthier way than my mother did when I was a kid. She would fry everything and serve it with two glasses of soda. I believe I drank about 2 cans a soda per day. Also, we weren't given any vegetables to eat. She never bought them.

When I finally moved out I completely changed the way I cooked. I enjoy making food from scratch and rarely buy ready-made mixes, dough and seasonings. There's usually way too much salt or sugar added to these things or it contains transfat. Also, I voluntarily added vegetables to my diet. The key to eating certain "disgusting" vegetables is to cook them in a way that significantly lowers or eliminates the taste. I've noticed that some people cook their vegetables separate from the main dish. I didn't do this. Problem solved.

We'd all have to reveal our current weight and find a way to verify how much each of us has lost, right? If not, then I don't see how this will work.

Well if we keep the prize to 60$ and someone cheats to get that amount, I'm not going to worry about it. I'm not that kind of game player.

If we can't do the page here (for multiple edits) we (or I) could set up a wordpress/mt blog so each person can post/update their stats.

That's kinda the point of the whole Biggest Loser experiment. It's like the Pile of Shame. If you don't meet you're goals, you're not just letting yourself down, you're letting down the collective/being embarrassed by your laziness.

I can understand some reluctance to wanting to post your weight and such. We could theoretically set up a separate, password protected forum elsewhere for people to track this stuff (and maybe even get into weight loss strategies and post recipes and such) if people would feel more comfortable not posting that information to the internet at large, but even then, if you won (lost the most), I can almost guarantee a thread with your before and after weight (and picture?) in the main post.

You do bring up a good point. If we're talking about giving away a console or something, someone might be tempted to cheat. It would be fairly hard to prevent scamming though. There's no way to enforce that over the internet. Without being able to do in-person weigh-ins we'd be screwed.

We could set up the Biggest Loser S&T for the weigh-ins and weigh-outs.

I think the picture idea would be great, but if people were a little reluctant to actually state their weight, you could just state how much was lost each check-in. Weight and inches, maybe? I believe the community here isn't the type to be unfair and lie just to win a prize.

I'm interested. I was going to the local gym for about a month steadily but then dropped. I should go back as I do pay the monthly fee.

I put on a few pounds since moving to San Diego (mmm... California burritos & carne asada fries...) so some weight loss is in order. Been thinking of taking up Judo as well.

For the last two years, we've done Weigh in to Win, sponsored by the local YMCA. Every contestant had their own blog, and a MiniDV camera. Blogs + video diaries worked incredibly well. Of course, the complimentary Y membership didn't hurt either.

I can donate the server space if needed. Lots of DreamHost burning a hole in my digital pocket.
