Penny Arcade Episode 2 - Catch All
Well Tomorrow is the big day. Episode 2 of Rain Slick will hit XBLA as well as PC, Mac and Linux via Greenhouse.I just had a chance to sit down and play through the entire game and I can honestly say it's much better than episode 1. Not only did we learn a lot on the first episode but we got a ton of great feedback from you guys. As a result episode 2 has more puzzles, more flash cut scenes, multiple difficulty settings, a longer story with more dialog options and some really epic boss fights.
I'm curious to see how the reviews on this one shake out. I feel like episode 1 was a solid 8 and most reviewers seemed to agree. I feel like with episode 2 we've got a high 8 or maybe even a 9 on our hands. I really feel like we've made a significantly better game here and hopefully you'll all agree.
It's also important to mention that we've dropped the price. You'll be able to pick up episode 2 for 14.95 tomorrow. Also if you haven't played through episode 1 yet we've dropped the price on that as well. If you play through the first game you can bring your awesome character into the next installment. You'll also need to play episode 1 if you want to get Div as a support character. He's actually broken into two parts with the first being found in episode 1 and the second in episode 2.
If you end up grabbing the game tomorrow please drop me a line and let me know what you think.

Hmmm.. going to wait to see how the exchange rate stabilises over the next few days, we've been hammered recently, but this is a must buy.

Ditto. I was wondering when they were going to release the second chapter.

Episode 1 was also delayed on Steam too. It should be there in a couple of weeks.

Cool, this kind of snuck up on me what with all the other stuff released recently.
I shall be grabbing that this evening.
I'll be grabbing the Xbox version over the weekend. I had no idea this was coming out.

Yeah, they really snuck it up on us. Last I heard about 6 weeks ago was 'when it's ready.' Today I saw it in Google Reader.
(Why does Firefox underline snuck?)

Awful timing. Way to much to play right now to bother with this :-/

I can't remember if I found the Div piece in Episode 1. Great, now I have to replay that too.
I'll buy this and love it, but not until I'm done loving Fallout 3.

What?
Fallout, Far Cry, WAR, and now this?
This would have been perfect a month ago, or a couple months from now.

If I bought the epi 1 from ...not Steam(can't remember) and get ep2 from Steam will everything still transfer?
I need to go find Div now too.
The release now seems pretty odd. Lately all Tycho seems to do is complain that there isn't time to play the games that are out and coming soon.

Holy carp, this is out already? Time to finish up the 1st one ( I think I'm near the end ) while trying to work through Saints Row 2, Fable 2, and Fallout 3. And I still have to try to save enough scratch for Gears of War 2.
Plan to be spontaneous... tomorrow

I've got 1200 points sitting around, so I will pick this up on Live tonight. Luckily, I have resisted the siren calls of everything but Fallout 3 so far, so I can split my time between the two fairly. WineGlass, good luck with all that at the same time.

Way to go Penny Arcade, release a game that would be a must buy during a week in which the biggest game of the year in the genre of RPG is released. What genre is your game again? Oh right, RP f'n G. I'll see you in December, Penny Arcade.

Well, I am treating RSPOD as a break game. Whenever I have to take a break from being molested by super mutants and giant ants, I will be stopping Lovecraftian horrors from taking over New Arcadia. It is a lighter-weight, less involved game than any of the $60 behemoths that just hit.

From the Penny Arcade post, it looks like they are dropping the price of Episode 1. Has anyone heard if that will flow through to a price drop in the XBLA version? I'd like to play it, but with all the gaming goodness out there, I keep hoping that the price will drop before I get there.

I don't know, I think Tycho has a perspective on the whole thing. From today's main page news post:
"It's a grim fact, but all the controversy surrounding Fallout 3 is essentially irrelevant. In some cosmic calamity, they chose to launch their product just one day before the sequel to our game, On The Rain-Slick Precipice Of Darkness: Episode Two. I can't imagine what it must be like to have four years of toil completely obliterated like that, and my heart goes out to them. Hopefully their work on Post-Apocalyptic settings has prepared them for the worst."

Yeah, while it is unfortunate timing, you can't really blame them. If they came out in early 2009, then it might be too long between episodes, in the slowest sale period of games.
I understand the complaints, but I'm sure the complaints will be there with the other option as well: "When did the last one come out? Last May? I can't even remember what happened in the first one. Does anyone still care about this game? Penny Arcade calling this "episodic" is a joke. I can't be bothered to continue with this if they're going to take so long between each one."

I love that man.

I'm waiting for three things: to be done (or done-ish) with Fallout 3, to have some spending money again, and for ORSPODET* to be available through Steam. I mistakenly believed that, when they created Greenhouse for Episode One, it meant that it would never come out on Steam - that Steam was the competitor. I hate it when I buy a game right before it comes out on Steam and there's no way to get my money back to switch platforms.
I'm staggering all my big-time games for this year, so it'll be a long time before I get around to this one. It's probably going to have to wait for me to finish with Fallout 3, Fable 2, Far Cry 2, Gears of War 2, whatever games I've forgotten, and for the inevitable Left 4 Dead obsession to subside a bit. Too bad.

Why complain about when games come out? If you can't play it now, then play it later. It's not like PA is fighting for store shelf space.
On that note, I'll play it...in November after I'm done with the Witcher, and hopefully before L4D.

Personally I'm gonna buy it on Greenhouse, when I get around to having the time to play the game. Steam is a little more fully featured and convenient, but it seems they resolved the biggest difference which was the lack of "triumphs". (I love/hate achievements, but if you're gonna have them then put them in all versions of the game, especially the one you distribute yourself.) Steam's a great service, but I'd rather support Hothead and Penny-Arcade more directly.
I just finished episode 1 this past weekend as a part of my Pile of Shame obligations. I really loved it, and I'm really looking forward to playing episode 2 in a few months when things have settled down.

I found the combat way too stressful in the first one, so I think I will probably give it a pass. I wish I could have gotten into it; I really like the writing.

I'm going to do the same, I love Steam, but I bought the first one at Greenhouse and I'll buy the second one there too. I want PA and Hothead to get the biggest slice possible.
You found no-fail, turn-based combat stressful? O.O
Damn, most games must leave you a wreck.
Twitter |Steam |Raptr |Gamertag
I agree with the stress comment. The emphasis on blocking (which was practically required past the first section) and the timers which always seemed to be running alternately too fast or too slow made it difficult to find a good rhythm in combat.
I did manage to get through the whole game though, and it wasn't so bad that I don't want to play the sequel. I'll be interested to see if they made any major changes to the combat system, as they have made it clear that they've taken a lot of fan feedback to heart.
