Help Me GWJ! - Online Music Service/Audiobooks!

Okay, so I just got a new Mp3 player. I'd like to fill it, outside of using other sources with names that rhyme with "Mole-Bleak", or buying CDs wholesale.

So i'd like to find a online service that lets me buy music from it without a ton of hassle. Something like iTunes, except, not iTunes. I'm pretty much a permanent convert to the church of foobar2000, so i'm wondering if anyone knows anything else reliable and worthwhile that I can buy music from at a similarly iTunes like price, or have they cornered the market?

Any music I buy online I just buy from Amazon. No DRM mp3's that work with pretty much everything. Yes please.

As far as I'm concerned, there's Amazon and Mole-Bleak. Unfortunately, Amazon doesn't keep up with the newest independent (and I don't mean indie-rock) music as much as I would like.

Yep. Sometimes independent bands will give you the option to buy it from a different source(myspace[blech] or their website), though.

And I'm not sure what rhymes with "mole-bleak" but I'll assume it's illegal and move on.

I'd use Amazon in a second if it was available to Canadians.
Curses.
In the meantime, I like puretracks - they have DRM free stuff too - just not enough.

Amazon's MP3s are very good. If I could get lossless tracks with CUE sheets, so that I could create CDs for my own use, I'd buy most or all of my music there.

If they got it down to $5 a CD or so, the question would change. Instead of 'am I going to buy music this month?' it would be, "how much music am I going to buy this month?"

As for Independent music, I'd go for eMusic.com. They have a great subscription model that allows you download a certain amount of mp3s from them a month. I've found some really great indie (not just rock) music, as that is their specialty. All their mp3s are DRM free as well. I highly recommend it, even if just for the trial.

You could always use something that rhymes with "torrent." I only suggest that because it sounded like you wanted to fill your player, which, implies a great deal needed in a short period of time.

I've used the Zune marketplace some and that was fine. They give out a lot of their music as WMA though.

Amazon is probably going to be the least hassle.

Amazon here too. I also subscribe to Rhapsody To Go. I'd say that it greatly reduced my need to buy music outright. If it's on Rhapsody, then I can listen to it at home -- on my Logitech Squeezebox Duet, and on my PC in the office; and on the go -- on my Sansa Clip. I only buy stuff if I intend to "keep" it, or listen to it in the car (my Blaupunkt does MP3s, but not DRM'd ones).

I have many problems with things that rhyme with torrent, all of them technical, so Amazon is the best bet. And consider I just managed to cross about 15 songs off my "music I heard in Guitar Hero I/II/III or Rock Band and thought was awesome", and it was totally hassle-free, they have earned my business.

Yeah, Amazon's great, and gives the artist a reasonably large chunk of the money too (at least, they do for me...)

Good stuff.

Likewise! I've been subscribing to eMusic for over a year now and I really enjoy the service. It's not always the place to go when you know exactly what you want, because it may not have what you're looking for, but it's definitely a great way to find new stuff you'd probably never have heard otherwise.

1-week bump!

Hey, I just noticed something. I was about to pull the trigger on another purchase (Raw Power this time) but I noticed it forces me to use the Amazon.com downloader to do so.

I don't want to do so. Or at least, I don't know if it'll still give me all the wonderful DRM-free Mp3s I need. Anyone have any advice here?

Full albums go through the software, individual songs are just straight downloads.

The files are still the same, the downloader's just there to save you from having to download a dozen tracks one-at-a-time. eMusic uses downloader software in much the same way. Bleep, which is another store I should have mentioned earlier -- it's run by Warp Records in the UK, and stocks all of its own content, as well as content from a bunch of other electronic labels, all as MP3 (and some as FLAC) -- gets around needing a downloader by building a Zip file for you to download on-the-fly instead.

Their download client is small and harmless, and like Edwin said is used for full album purchases. It works fine. It doesn't run at startup, or ever really, until you download something from amazon that uses it.

I know this probably wont make me popular and I don't know if you can use it with other devices, but I've been absolutely loving the Zune marketplace. 15$/month for all you can eat. If your technically savvy enough you can get around the DRM, or you can just buy the DRM free versions of the tracks.

The new 3.0 zune firmware lets you download anything from the marketplace strait from the zune itself.

As a music junky, I use that function all the time. Its rad at parties when someone asks if you have X and you walk over to your zune and a minute later you have the whole album..

Hey, so, one more question people.

I've got a hour commute in the mornings, and i've gotten into Audiobooks as a result. Unfortunately, Amazon.com doesn't sell those (as far as I can see) and I haven't heard anything positive about Audible.com. Again, I don't really want to have to download a separate program just to put them on my Mp3 player, but if it's my only option, i'll do it grudgingly. I'm considering iTunes since they're one of the only sites that seems to have an actually sizable collection of Audiobooks, but again, the DRM is rather annoying. Ideas, anyone?

If you don't mind spending a little time ripping, Simply Audiobooks is the Netflix of books-on-CD. They also do digital downloads, but I have no experience with that part of the service.

Very happy with the CD service though. Been using it for a couple of years (although I'm considering dropping it, 'cause I tend to listen to a decent number of podcasts nowadays...)

Have you checked your local library? Most do physical CDs and some also give you access to websites with downloadable audiobooks (ebooks too).

ITMS DRM isn't that bad, actually. Just burn it to a CD, then rip from the CD. Use a rewritable and it's that much easier, not to mention you can do all of that within iTunes.

Sure, but you'll lose quality from the reencoding. That's probably okay for audiobooks, but there are free tools out there that can rip iTunes' DRM properly.

The only way anyone would really notice that loss is if they're an extreme audiophile. Otherwise, you're decompressing to a CD, then reencoding/compressing to your format of choice; you can even go back into the original ITMS format without the DRM.

eMusic has an audiobooks section; I'm not sure how extensive the selection is, but it's all in DRM-free MP3 format.

I'd imagine that'd be quite a long and involved process for audiobooks -- aren't they a lot longer than the usual 80 minutes or so of audio that you can put on a CD?

As an idealist, I'd also like to point out that buying DRM content and then circumventing the DRM doesn't exactly send Apple the "I don't like your DRM" message. As a pragmatist, though, I realise that some people just want to buy content, not change the world

Of course, which MP3 player you bought will dictate some of your options. Having tried Rhapsody To Go twice now, the lack of high quality large capacity players is still a deal breaker. They did have a lot of comedy and spoken word tracks as I recall.

Have you heard much bad about Audible? For books, you might try Librivox. But as RangerRick hinted at, there are tons of podcasts to fill that time as well.

Before switching to Simply Audiobooks, I used Audible, and I was pretty happy with it. Only reason I switched was price; I was perfectly happy with Audible's service, and their selection is huge. It's just cheaper to get SAB and there's no DRM when you rip CDs, so it won out for me.

That said, I seem to recall that iTunes uses Audible for their content, so whatever selection you have at Audible, you'll have at iTunes. (Googled) Hmm, looks like Amazon bought Audible.com so who knows if anything will happen to iTunes whenever that contract runs out. I can't imagine Amazon turning down money from Apple, it's just another sales channel to them, but.... Between the two, choose your DRM poison, I guess.
