It's that time of year again. We lucked out on Gustav and Hannah but it looks like our luck has run out.

Already spent some time re-drilling and re-anchoring the hurricane shutters into the concrete of the house and I still have to do the entire front of the house. Any other So Fla people getting ready?

edit: The keys have been told to start getting out. http://www.wunderground.com/blog/JeffMasters/comment.html?entrynum=1065&...

Ok, so maybe that was completely tasteless and insensitive, but really who names a hurricane "Ike"?

Man, you guys are getting hit pretty hard at the moment I have to confess to having a certain vested interest in Florida, but even outside of that I hope everyone will be ok. Please be careful out there.

If you can't be a good example, at least be a horrible warning.

Sigh, after it grazes FL, it looks like it's coming right at my doorstep. I get the hear the mayor of New Orleans call this the "father of all storms", etc. This one looks bad...

The problem is going to be that the remnants of the last storm haven't left yet. The ground is soaked through and through, and the water is already high. It won't take much for Ike to do the deed.

We're first-world infrastructure. We should be able to handle whatever happens, assuming reasonable competence on the part of the authorities. But poor Haiti; they've been hit by two hurricanes in the last two weeks, and another monster is passing close by; they could easily be hit directly by a third.

THOSE are the people I'm mostly worried about right now.

One of the most respected of the MeFites, who lives in Louisiana, but not New Orleans proper, posted about his experiences with Gustav.

Short version: not good at all. They got really messed up, but it didn't make headlines because New Orleans didn't drown this time.

Another storm would be much worse there than I'd realized; I didn't know it was this bad.

Thanks for that link, Malor. I've been trying to get in touch with friends in Baton Rouge all week, but have heard nothing. I assumed power was still out, but wast not sure. I heard from many different sources that this was worse for BR than both Betsy and Katrina. If they can just start getting power back, they can start on the road to improvement. I know Entergy (and the other smaller companies down there) are trying as hard as they can. It must be miserable working conditions.

I realize we can't stop hurricanes but for God sakes we can do something to minimize their devastation in cities like New Orleans. If our sitting government had half a clue they'd get the Dutch engineers on the phone then get them on a plane to New Orleans.

They are the world experts on flood prevention and I'm sure they could properly engineer a flood control system.

Even the best flood engineers in the world can't regrow a few thousands of square kilometers of wetlands and mangroves in a season, unfortunately.

I don't think that Dutch Engineers are known for their construction of Hurricane resistant locks and keys, when was the last time they had to deal with them?

I also agree that we should be able to handle weather at this point, but I think that outsourcing isn't the answer, and better allocating or own resources is.

Actually, New Orleans is 300 years old and the original footprint is quite a bit above sea level. It did not flood in Katrina, either. You may have heard it called "the sliver by the river". The parts that flooded are in areas that 100 years ago were swamp. So before you go spouting off like you know what you're talking about, do a little homework.

Edit: Also, Robear is right. 300 years ago (100 years ago, even), New Orleans was much more inland than it is now.

I have to admit my amusement regarding the fact that the first two "it's heading for me" posts were from FL and LA. Personally, I'm glad and relieved that Ike is coming to TX instead of either of those two storm-battered states - we need the rain.

Large Hurricane Ike Poised To Impact Texas

Quote:

Wayne Verno, Lead Meteorologist, The Weather Channel
2:51 a.m. ET 9/11/2008

Hurricane Ike

As of 1 a.m. CDT, Ike was located about 645 east of Brownsville, Texas, with maximum sustained winds near the center holding at 100 mph. Movement is now toward the west-northwest at around 9 mph.

Ike's pressure remains low (a sign of strong hurricane), with the latest reading from an Air Force Hunter Aircraft of 946 mb (27.94 inches). But despite this low pressure, Ike's winds have not increased yet due to the very large size of the storm. However, additional strengthening remains likely and Ike is forecast to become a major hurricane today or Friday

So around 7am on Saturday the Hurricane is going to make landfall just south of Houston if it continues on the current track. All you GJer Houston/Galveston types better be packing up at this point. Us here in College Station, TX are going to be experiencing either Cat 1 Hurricane force winds or Tropical Storm weather. Either way it's going to rain like hell.

Check out the path:

Check out the number of Oil Rigs in the Gulf. All those little dots are oil rigs.

If you experience anything in this storm and have some pictures afterwards post them up here.

Well, I am in Central Houston. My house is maybe 10-miles outside the current mandatory evacuation zone. Fortunately I live in the Houston "Heights" so I'm not too worried about flooding. Unfortunately, my house is 80 years old so I am worried about damage from wind and debris. Lots of trees in the neighborhood. I will probably pack up some belongings and head over to the girlfriend's house later tonight. She lives about 30 miles further inland than I do.

Three years ago Rita was supposed to hit us dead-on at one point and ended up missing us by about 100-miles so its still too early to panic. Having said that, there is no reason to believe given the current models and wind speed predictions that this one won't put us on our asses for a while.

Of the Houston Goodjers, I know Fed lives just a few miles from me. There are several others but I think most of them live more inland.

I'm really glad I live in a area of the world where the most exciting weather events we've had to deal with are The Storm That Blew Down A Tree In My Neighbour's Yard and That Time It Looked Like It Was Going To Rain But Then It Didn't. Hell, we had an unusually large snowfall in 1996 and people are still talking about it.

My offer, of course, extends to any of the Houston GWJ crew who might be seeking refuge. I merely singled out Pharacon because I knew he recently moved there from California(?) and wasn't sure if he had any family around here.

Not recently, but the scientists keep telling us we're due for some kind of apocalyptic superquake sometime within the next 100 years.

Hey guys checking in! Last few minutes in the apartment so last few minutes of fast internet. Thinking about bailing out and heading north-west. But this will more then likely depending on tomorrow. Thanks for the offer Grump, pm'd you my email if you would forward your cell incase I need to use it.

My new house is all loaded down with all my crap but has a ton of insurance to boot. went out got a ton of water and canned food. The neighbors I spoke to this morning said we should be good because Rita didn't mess up our section other than a few trees blown over.

The squeegee push room is locked into "ready" position.
