The beta for Socom has just released today and each code can be shared with two other people. I know there's isn't a huge GWJ following but if anyone is remotely interested in joining up and playing a truly great tactical shooter, feel free to use the code below.

8MMB-9PBF-ADDR

Initial thoughts:

This beta is a complete clusterf*ck. I'm so aggravated with it at this point I'm debating on whether to stop trying. I've been sitting her for 45 minutes and still haven't gotten a game to load up. Prior Socomers be warned, Slant Six jacked things up pretty bad in terms of load times, navigation, etc. More to come...

Edit:

Ok, I finally got into a match. Right off the bat, I could tell that the movement and aiming is completely off. Everything seems really slow but it might just need a few tweaks in the menu. The visuals are semi next-gen and the audio overall is well done imo. Accessing the equipment menu forces you to stop moving which is problematic and there seems to be a delay between switching weapons and gear. So, far there's been some lag and freezing but nowhere near what I remember from S2.

So, did anyone else have a chance to play? The more I play, the more I'm liking the game but it definitely needs a few major tweaks. If you guys come across any major bugs/glitches, I'd suggest posting them here. Thanks.

We need to get a GWJ room going tonight!!

My wife and my buddy in the Air Force (whose stuck in Korea right now) have laid claim to my code's other uses.

However, if my wife has fun with the game today, I will probably go put down a second pre-order, and I'll share that code here.

I went from 0 to SOCOM fan in 1 match. My roommate Devmani was standing over me laughing his ass off at the addiction set it, HARD.

I generally hate the Dualshock controller, but it felt very natural. This is an excellent game, reminds me of Counter-strike and the year I wasted on that game. The maps are extremely well designed, or the 2 I've played so far, anyway. Count me in as someone who will be spending some time with this game.

I'm going from Socom fan to 0 rather quickly. There are a lot of problems with this game and no way that Slant Six can get them addressed by launch. I might end up cancelling my pre-order and not buying until they eventually patch it.

mind elaborating 93? I still haven't heard a solid opinion on this game. How are the weapons? The play mechanics? environments? Inquiring minds wish to know!

Weapons: recoil is too high, hit detection is inaccurate, grenades are awkward to throw

Mechanics: switching weapons is cumbersome as you have to access a GRAW-like wheel while stopped, "sprinting" is what walking was in Socom 2 and during a sprint you can't change weapons or use a weapon; you have to come to a complete stop to crouch or prone; the six-axis lean function is garbage and there's no longer an option to lean using the d-pad

General: lag is atrocious, loading times are the worst I've ever seen in any game - ever, lack of information in terms of understading the status of a given lobby, freezing issues galore, incredibly small font in-game and otherwise, below-par graphics and physics

It might be better summed up by reading the first post of this:

erk... when "BUG: Sometimes when you are near an explosion it can cause you to lose all audio for the rest of the match. " is a minor issue, I can understand the wait-and-see approach.

My games have had none of the lag or hit detection issues 93 is talking about. Like souldaddy, I'm all over this.

And what about the mechanics? You're telling me none of the issues I mentioned are a problem?

You shouldn't be able to switch weapons during a sprint, that's part of the point.

The lean is great, the first good use of the SIXAXIS tilt I've seen. I don't know what your problem with it is. The sensitivity setting makes a big difference.

What I'm saying is the sprint is the speed that you should be walking and that's what it was in S2. Also, it takes a long time to cross the map (large) and during the so called "sprint" you're defenseless. They need to increase the speed of both the walk and spring and the flow of the game will be back where it should be.

I disagree on the sixaxis. The d-pad was a much more effecient way of leaning. It's unnatural to be tilting a control to lean while shooting. They should at least give players the option to choose between the two.

Well, you're right and wrong.

You're wrong that walking is slower than S2. It's really, truly not. But the size of the space you're moving through is increased. And the sprint is only a very small bump in speed. Your conclusion that an increase in movement speed to both walking and running is something that I agree with. Just a little, subtle bump, but a bump. (Also, keep in mind that your armor choice and loadout choice affects your movement speed)

As for weapon switching, are you forgetting the L1 button? L1 instantly switches between your primary and secondary weapons, and you can pick what to assign L1 to in the GR:AW wheel. The only time you have to use the wheel is to select something that's neither your primary nor L1-toggle secondary weapon. That's exactly like previous SOCOM games.

I won't argue with the idea that D-pad leaning should be an option, I'm always in favor of making control as customizable as possible. It should be pointed out, thought, that motion control does a lot more than just left-right lean.

What I'm bothered with right now is the server browser. I don't want to have to scroll though all of the custom games little jerk-off players make with Infinite respawn, in order to get to the official Medley rooms. The Medley rooms either need to be at the top (like past SOCOMs), or I need a "hide all jerk-off custom games" option in the browser filter.
