Official Spore Catch-All [All Platforms]
Spore is finally coming out! This is the official catch-all to talk about the game, make friends and ... do whatever else you do in Spore. I've been on media blackout.

I highly recommend everyone read at least some of this great article over at Rock, Paper, Shotgun. It's not full of spoilers at all, it just gives you a good perspective to approach the game from.
The first four stages you’ll play through in four hours tops. The space stage is at least twice that, and probably a lot more. When you play the earlier games, it’s clear there isn’t much more depth there compared to a normal strategy game… but they’re designed to be comprehensible and entertaining for that very brief period of time. The problem with that is, on the first play through, you’re being mildy entertained and wondering “is this it?”. Spore is a big game - in terms of scope - and its actual experience is actually quite intimate. It’s not blowing you away in the way that you’re expecting it too.But the game fundamentally changes when you reach the Space stage - it’s the one part of the game which is absolutely on par with any other game of its type - which is pretty much Space Rangers and sod all else in recent years (Comparisons to a game like Galactic Civilizations are deeply misplaced - you may as well say that Mount & Blade doesn’t stack up against Age of Wonders). It has a mass of mechanics - many of them introduced in the previous four hours, in a subtle and elegant way - and is a real, proper game, a pop-cute Elite with terraforming.
If anyone wants to start a new thread specifically for creatures and such, please feel free!
Before you can respond to this though, you must collect 12 donkey rectums. - Pyroman[FO] deflating all arguments.

Should we post our Spore account names here, or should that go elsewhere as well?
SOLD.

Might be a good idea to make a Spore account/Creature thread. I'll take care of it!

Is it hitting the big box stores on Sunday?

I ordered via Amazon (I can't stand giving money to EB/Gamestop - and I have PRIME! Woot for a few bucks on next day shipping) - I'll be curious to see when I get it.
And I think that Kieron is on to something with regards to approaching Spore... I am curious to see how my own experience trends.

Is there an endgame 'win' condition for Spore or is it endless?

Quick tips:
Don't try to be either a social carnivore or a combat herbivore on your first character. Get a feel for the game first.
Play on easy difficulty on your first character
Equip a plant mouth and meat mouth to make an omnivore
It seems that your selection of herbivore, omnivore, carnivore will concentrate which parts you find. I.E. I have yet to find a carnivore part as an herbivore and vice versa. Omnivores have their own selections too so you won't be finding herbivore nor carnivore parts as an omni.
The tribal and civ stages are the most fun for me. The cel stage and creature stage can drag on if you aren't consistent with your actions. (make friends or enemies but not both)
Being fangoriously devoured by a gelatinous monster.
I just want my species to end up like the Shadows or the Vorlons in the end game explore the universe section. Can I manipulate lesser species? Can my final act be setting a course beyond the galactic rim before the credits roll?

Yes - ultimately the idea is to discover the secret at the centre of the universe.

Meh, it sucks the US has to wait until Sunday.

oh FFS!
I wouldn't worry about having to wait. Right now all I'm getting (along with a large number of other people I gather) is...
"You do not have the proper privileges to use spore's online features"
Urge to kill....rising.....
granted, I could press on and play with the vanilla Maxis creatures but....what the hell's the point in that...

The reviews are all saying the same thing: Spore is a charming gateway drug that might not peak the interest of regular gamers.
I'm gonna wait on this until the goodjer-pedia fills up somewhat. Something tells me that Spore will be much more interesting if I stumble across Certisians, Swatzskis, zeroKFE-ites, TempestBlayzers, etc.

TempestBlayzers huh?

Swatzskis sound, well, frightening. Not sure I want any of those.

nope - PC. Apparently it's a generic error message which in this case can be translated as "We screwed up and the servers wont recognise your CD key. We're sure It'll all be fine at some unspecified point possibly in the near future....sucks to be you right now though" (i might be paraphrasing slightly)
Which is why i'm slightly annoyed about their servers snafu. *sigh* I was holding out in the hope that it was only a temporary thing...guess I'll try it with the default beasties for the moment.

I saw this at my pirate local market yesterday. I didn't buy it tho, I don't have time to play and my gaming time is TF2-only.

Well, played an hour or so (through the first stage and part way through the second).
Drinking things to death as an omnivore in stage 1 is hilarious
Stage 2 I'm not so keen on so far,but I've only played a few minutes into it so far so too early to tell really.
I will say it could REALLY do with some more interesting creatures to encounter. The default beasts are shockingly bland next to some of the things the community has come up with.
Hurry up and fix yer servers EA dammit!

I got on straight away - and lvl 2 is a riot, once you start converting other creatures to your cause
"The players come from all over the world, the money from deep underneath the Persian Gulf, but, as another, older City poster campaign put it, this is their city. They may now exist in the global spotlight, but they intend to keep it that way."
Ah good - seems to be working for me now too.

Is it released in Canada yet or are we like the US?

I'll probably pick this up on Sunday, after I'm done moving. I hope it has plenty of CINEMACTION.

I saws this in the store today, picked it up, and put it back down. My interest is piqued, but I'm waiting for a few more play impressions.

Played a little more....couple of quick opinions so far.
First stage
Quite a fun little mini-game. Doesn't go on long enough to get annoying, although your pretty much collecting the same 'pieces' each time through and there's not a huge variation in the types of creatures you can make at this stage.
Second stage
A basic little "roam around, make friends/enemies and collect stuff" type of affair. Wasn't too keen on it but it's kept interesting by the random creatures pulled form the sporepedia. Again, doesn't out-stay it's welcome. Creature editing is pretty much as per the creature creator released previously (except you are limited to the parts you have found already in the game world).
Third stage
Again, it's a pretty brief stage (completed it in under an hour).
The RTS stage. To be honest, this felt a wee bit too fiddly (when trying to swap around the various 'jobs' you can give your creatures) and there didn't really feel like there was much of a challenge to it. Dressing up your creature in his finery though is quite entertaining
Fourth stage
The civ stage. Haven't played it much yet but the building and vehicle editors are awesome - just as powerful and entertaining as the creature editor.
