Yikes, makes me almost want to BUY a PSP, then hack it.
Reasons for not owning a PSP are getting shakier and shakier anyway. Maybe for Xmas

I can't believe that there are GWJ folks who haven't hacked their PSPs nor signed up on the list!
Seriously, there are lots of reasons to hack other than this game (although it sounds cool). Drastically reduced load times through playing games off of memory sticks, for example.

All the emulators as well. Been playing SNES and Genesis games for last couple months. Great stuff!

Wow, awesome! I'll be checking this out right away.

Yeah, I should sign up on "the list". I just worry that if I mod my PSP I'll miss out on some of the interesting functionality that Sony adds as they patch or be unable to play new games that require newer patch versions. I'm sure there's ways around that stuff with the mods, it's just something I've never wanted to mess with. For example, does Remote Play work on modded PSPs?
Having all of my games on a memory stick instead of UMDs would be sweet, though, especially for traveling.

Oh poor, ill-informed Gazebo
So far, every (major) firmware update Sony has released has been hacked and turned into a custom firmware. The "interesting functionality" updates are few and far between, but so far (AFAIK) none of these features have been compromised by CFW. I don't use it, but Remote Play works, last I'd heard.
Will Sony do something to "blacklist" CFW users? I don't know if it's possible, but the homebrew community is strong and I'm confident that most of these issues can be overcome (if and when they develop). Sony is most likely going to the PSP-3000 so quickly to try and stop hacking/CFW/piracy through hardware means, so if anyone wants a hackable PSP, I suggest they buy one as soon as possible.

According to the readme for this, it works better on slim psp's than the old fat ones because of memory. I'm currently digging around for my ultima 7 stuff then I'll check out how the fat psp works.

Yeah, I need to get around to hacking mine eventually for the functionality improvements. That and to get Monster Hunter 2 to be playable online.
While mostly true the fact that he mentions remote play does give some need for reservation. I believe the remote play always checks to make sure you have the latest firmware on the PS3 and PSP.

Remote play works. Perfectly, I might add.

Not to derail, but this comment made me think. I am seriously looking at picking up a PSP, primarily for emulators and things like the thread topic but also for a few games like Hot Shots Golf. Are there significant differences between the hardware versions, such that I should prioritize trying to find one type over the other? There seem to be 3 different iterations of the hardware: fat (the original), slim, and the 2000(?). Is any one of those better for homebrew than the others?
I'm so confused (and hungry)!

The Slim was the 2000, and they recently announced they'll be coming out with the 3000 before too long. I'd wait for that one, if you can, or try to pick up and older one on the cheap.

If you are interested in hacking your PSP, DO NOT WAIT FOR THE PSP 3000.
It's almost a foregone conclusion that the 3000 will have some new type of hardware-based anti-hacking measures. It will have a brighter screen (lower battery life) and a built in microphone for Skype and other online games, but at worst it will be unhackable, and at best it will take a while for the hacks to show up.
The current PSP 2000 has more system RAM that the original fat PSP, a TV out, and a few other features. If you're looking for a hack machine, I'd suggest getting a 2000 ASAP (either new or used).

I'd add that the PSP phat was bright enough from day one. I usually play with the brightness turned down, usually the lowest setting. Brighter is the 3000s main claim to fame, but it's not necessary.

Agreed. I still have the phat, and while it's heavier, it still works great and has decent battery life (especially since I hacked it).

Well, I up and bought one yesterday. =D
Need to get down to Chinatown today to get a Tool Battery, but I have been enjoying the fool out of Monster Hunter Freedom 2 so far, which I got used at the same time.
Thanks for the advice, guys!
