Spore on Friday
Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008 - 2:38am
It seems the nytimes is saying that Spore will be out on Friday. It just kinda snuck up on me I guess, I figured there would be a much larger marketing campaign for it, as I have seen nothing so far. Of course the Spore website says its not coming out until the 7th, but still. The writeup in the times did seem kinda interesting, just not sure if it sounded $50 interesting.

Myself, I think it's $50 interesting. Pity it'll be more like $110 here when it comes out.
I'm going to wait until I've read some reviews before I get too excited. Will Wright has a good track record, but high concept games... not so much.

I saw some tv commercials for it this weekend, starting maybe Friday, so I think the push has begun. And if it really is out Friday, I'll be a happy camper. But I suspect that's when they drop to the stores; isn't the official release, erm, Sunday?

Read today that we should be able to pick it up from Big W down here on Thursday, for $74, or $79 from K mart or JB Hifi. Not too bad compared to 99 at EB Games/GAME stores.

I did the pre-order download thing, so whenever they DO release it, I'm just an unlock away.

Pre-order DL from where?

You can pre-oder DL from the EA store. Unfortunately, it will only let you d/l it again for 6 months unless you pay an extra fee.
I'm just waiting till it comes out on D2D.

Yeah, the extra fee thing sucks, but with the price of gas and/or shipping, it balances out for me.

TV specials on Discovery this week and National Geographic next week....

I'm not sure how big the final download from EA Store will be, but the preload was only 3.8GB which makes it very easy to just burn on a DVD for backup. Screw paying extra to download it again... well, assuming I don't lose the DVD

It's definately due friday here in the Uk. Not sure about elsewhere ( I keep hearing sunday).
Looking forward to it - got the galactic edition reserved, which I think is supposed to have that documentary included?
The hype for this game is pretty severe. Thinking about it, the game is a huge gamble. Going from single celled organism to planet invading super-being could have been released as half a dozen full sized games. Releasing it in one package results in at least two possibilities:
1) It is the best value in gaming ever.
2) It is a game that tries to do and be everything, but nothing is incredibly polished.
I really hope the former is true, but I have a nagging voice in the back of head that is screaming the latter.
It looks interesting. But not Day One interesting. I'll probably pick it up after a couple of price drops.

I'll wait until one of you shouts "I'm playing" then copy your route. With my luck I'll buy it from EA only to have D2D unlock it 3 days early.

I am staying away from EA link. That download service is a piece of trash and I don't trust it at all.

Well, the game is being advertised in the New York Times...somehow in the Science Times, even.
Incidentally, I'm a professor...how come they don't let me have games early??

As bad as I want to have Spore, I can't handle the idea of using EA's downloader or D2D. Both of them just make me cringe. Ironically I guess, I have no problems at all with Steam. I'd be all over it if they published it on Steam.
I guess I'm waiting for a box then. Try not to have too much fun without me.

Yeah this did kind of sneak up. I'm still pretty cautious about the game, I think it will be fun but I doubt it will be as revolutionary as people have hoped. I'll sit on some reviews and let them simmer, I've had to be more careful lately about how I spend my gaming bucks.

Dumb marketing to have this thing on slow burn for years and then not pump it up more than they have. It could have been a cultural event like Doomsday was for Doom II. Maybe the game sucks.

I to am worried about how fun it will actually be. I am hoping my thoughts will be put to rest and we get decent early reviews about the game.

The PC gamer Uk review was 91% with a pretty favourable writeup. That's the only review I've seen of it so far. I posted a couple of highlights in one of the other spore related threads a while back.
Looking forward to this (it's definitely out over here on Friday anyway - not sure about the rest of the world).
Some German mags have apparently given Spore some mediocre reviews. 73 and 79 out of 100.

Apparently one of the magazines pretty much didn't like the actual gameplay it seems. That kind of worries me because I loved the creator creator demo but really wished I had some fun stuff to actually do with my creature. I'll still probably pick the game up week one though, I haven't had anything to play lately outside of TF2. And even if it's just a basic gameplay wrapper for the various creators, it'll probably be fun enough.
I just don't see this game being all that it says it is. It seems like all the focus if on the creation of species and towns than actually game play.

Apparently Spore is on shelves in Australia already.

Ah yes, the arbiters of fun. Germans.
I've had this thing on pre-order for months. It's a Maxis toy. People who are thinking that it's going to be Thundarr the Barbarian plus Civilization plus Sins of a Solar Empire are in for a disappointment. Go play SimCity again and you'll know what to expect.

Word is Friday in Europe (Ffridmghwuiday in Wales, I think) and Sunday in the US. So unless someone breaks street date in a big way, we're gonna have to find some way to spend most of the weekend.

Price drop from $50? I wouldn't count on it, unless it massively bombs. I expected a heftier price tag considering how long its been pending/in development + the hype that it had in the past.
Hmm, $74 is getting into 'possible' territory. Being a poor student again makes me a bit pickier than I was when I was working full-time.
Words of wisdom. Maxis does tend to make 'toys' rather than games in the conventional sense. Like most toys, i'm sure it'll be fun at first, but it's a matter of how long it stays fun. I sunk a lot of hours into SimCity 2000 back in the day, but I lasted for about an hour on The Sims.
The massive success of the Sims franchise shows that a lot of people would disgree with me on what qualifies as a 'fun' toy.
