GWJRPG: Scales of War Catch-all

I am running a campaign, using the Adventure Path from Dungeon Magazine: Scales of War. The basic idea of this Path is a series of adventures made to take 5 characters from level 1 to level 30, with a new section in each month's Dungeon. As this adventure path is planned to cover 30 levels, with Wizards putting out 1-1.5 levels worth of story every month, this should be a fairly long term project, so I'd like to have players who can make an effort to show up each week. We are playing Wednesday nights at 9pm EST; Fantasy Grounds alias to get in is "just wand dead user".

Post your interest in this thread, then we can start nailing down the details of what your initial backstory is, and when you can join up.

Sounds good! I'm possibly in, depending on KingMob's plans as his campaign is currently Wednesday nights but I believe it is about to conclude.

I want to play too, and sadly my campaign is not concluding because you guys are not killing the bad guys fast enough. Seriously, you guys have at least another four sessions to go. Deleted some ranting here that gave away too much of the plot.

How long do you think you want to go per session Atras? My only problem with 9pm EST is that I absolutely have to stop by 12 EST so I can wake up the next morning (GETTING TOO OLD FOR THIS SH--T as my hero would say). I could log on at 7 or 8. Also I am free Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. Possibly Saturday night.

I'm in KingMob's game right now, and am certainly having a lot of fun in it. I'd love to be in on this too, assuming the scheduling can be worked out.

I would be aiming for 3 hour sessions, much longer and people's attention starts to drift. Looking at the campaign so far, it seems like it would break down into nice chunks that should fit in 3 hour spans. I can't really go much earlier, because I tend to be putting my kids to bed until 9, so me being there at 9 is enough of a challenge. I'm pretty tied up Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, and the weekends are always tough to schedule people. Do you have an ETA for wrapping up Kingmob?

Me too, i'd love to play, just let it be known that every 3rd wednesday or so I cannot play because of work obligations. (though this may be subject to change, I'm not sure yet)

Hey! Tsurras is doing the best he can. Considering he's usually the ONLY tank and sometimes the ONLY healer, it can be tough on the big guy.

Nosferatu, id love be a part of your campaign as well but my first loyalty is to kingmob's campaign which makes Wednesday nights a non-starter for me. At least, until we've defeated all of Kingmob's various foes and Tsurras has crushed the dark crystal under his mighty clawed foot.

Also, I think you might be underestimating the time it takes to get things done in FG2. Three hours might be difficult to start, get through a noncombat and combat encounter and wrap things for the week, especially if not everybody is there on time. Definitely takes some herding.

Lastly, I think I might make a suggestion to both you and kingmob: If you have in-game info (notes and the like) that you wish to share with the party that will be important later on, you might want to consider emailing them or posting them on a wiki, after they've been revealed in game (I prefer email myself). Since (at least as far as I know) FG2 doesnt allow players to keep GM generated notes, it can be hard to remember and then refer back to past info if it isn't readily at hand. Just a thought.

It's Atras's campaign, not Nosferatu's.

And Benticore... you know we have a wiki... I could post notes up there, but I was kinda relying on you guys to keep up your character journals... I could email everybody recaps but that would mean I'd be more organized, which doesn't seem to be happening.

I could potentially wrap up after the next two sessions. So September 10th would be my last game. Hopefully there will be more GWJRPG games for you guys to play those characters in...

Bent's referring to the things you reveal to us in-game, like the letters and what-not. FG2 doesn't cache those for us so that we can read them later. I don't thing anyone expects you to summarize the session by any means, but the posting of the chat log at least is very handy.

This would actually work pretty well, then. If I take over Wednesday night, people should be in the habit of showing up, so it can help to cut down on the herding.

What levels did you guys wind up at? If you are still lower level (like under Level 4) I can probably just adjust the level of some of the encounters and you could play your characters. It might even help if you wind up skipping encounters.

Depending on the number of players, I think having someone as a declared ringer to handle your missing character would work on those off weeks.

There are a couple of good options here. FG2 does save your Notes, so if you are jotting info down as it is revealed, you can share it with the party and keep track of things like that. Also, the DM can make a character that doesn't participate and do that for you. I won't be doing that, but it is an option. I do intend to post a session summary on the Wiki, but it will be more general: "The players learned that Old Man Smithers was the ghost, and he would have gotten away with it if not for the meddling PCs." instead of "Tsurras gathered the 5 clues: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and tracked down the Ghost".

As to character level, we're more or less just hitting level 2 right now, so unless there's significant inflation, it seems unlikely that we'd be above 3. On the other hand, I wouldn't mind starting from 1 again with a new character. It would be more accessible to newcomers that way. (Plus KingMob, being the DM, doesn't have a character yet.)

Atras,
Either way we're probably going to be at most level 3 by the time Kingmob finishes. Personally I've had a bit of an itch to give a warlock a go, or even the new wizard rules could be interesting.

Benitcore, I'm not sure you want me to DM a made up campaign, I have a wicked and sometimes evil sense of humor (let's just say one of the last times I DM the PCs ended with a wish that could be granted, and they wouldn't take it because they were afraid of the cruel twist they knew I'd throw in (What? So I lean towards the Djinns side of the wish granting). I'd might think about running a "boxed" module, because I couldn't be too evil with that (My villians aren't morons that post clues on how to get into their lairs)

If we end in two sessions I don't think you guys will hit level 3. But I'll probably give each of you something nice.

I was planning on starting a level 2 character with one level 3 magical item, if I played with you guys. Up to Atras of course, but it didn't seem too unbalancing to me. Probably a Dwarven two-handed fighter, since the group doesn't have any fighters and I like fighters. If Benticore isn't playing Tsurras and we're starting at lvl 1 however, I'll play anything.

Atras, do you know the Fallcrest setting in the back of the DMG? Just to warn you, if they play their old characters they'll start with a good reputation in Fallcrest, but they won't really be welcome in Witchlight Swamp.

I prefer having new characters in the campaign, but it is mostly to avoid having to change things (laziness). I was throwing out the idea of reusing characters to be accommodating, but it seems like that isn't needed. I've been reading the Dungeon and Dragon magazines (obviously, given the source materials) and I would not mind one bit if you guys wanted to try experimenting with some of the newer content: Warforged, Star Pact Warlocks, new Rituals and the like.

I was planning on making the town of Brindhol fairly distant from Fallcrest, just to avoid sticky situations like that.

Ack...I meant Atras, not Nosferatu...Sorry.

Also, if we have one large encounter or two small ones, I will definitely be 3rd level since I'm knocking on the door now.

If we get to keep our characters great! If not, I've got a wicked voodoo juju cleric named Thalamus ready to roll out and rattle the bones...

And I always forget to update my wiki. I've got to get better about that.

I'm quite happy to start a new character as well. I've been thinking about a Eladrin Tactical Warlord aiming at the Wizard of the Spiral Tower paragon path.

And yes, I should see about being better at updating my wiki as well one of these days.

I'm thinking along the lines of a Two-Blade Ranger as a char but I would be starting out at 1st level.

With six people we have a few options with regard to the campaign. I can look into upping some of the encounter difficulties to hopefully keep the leveling on track, but it means more for me to do. We can leave things as they are, and just let you guys have less XP each, which should make the early stuff easier and the later stuff harder. We can exclude Godryk, since he was the sixth person to show an interest. We can have one of you as a reserve player, doing some monster control when everyone shows up, and playing someone else's character when they aren't there.

I prefer the second option, since it would not leave anyone out, and I wouldn't have to do anything extra. I'd rather not exclude someone new to the site, it's not terribly welcoming. The reserve option has potential, I think, but when there is not combat and a full roster, that person gets kind of screwed. Any thoughts?

I have started to add some information to the Wiki Page.

I'll be watching this campaign closely. I took a look at the 1st installment of this latest adventure path and it doesn't seem anything close to the quality of AP put out by those fine folks at Paizo publishing. This saddens me. I am too lazy to write my own 4th edition adventures from scratch but all the published 4E adventures from WOTC are just a string loosely connected combat encounters. I look forward to seeing your opinions on the quality of this new AP.

I'm fine the just spreading the XP a little thinner. I don't think anyone will vote for excluding someone, worst case if it comes down to it I'd bow out to make room.

My feeling would be to go up to 6 players (at least) each with their own character. Again, if KingMob's game is a reasonable guide, not everyone will be able to show up for every session. And when we do all show up, it's generally pretty easy to scale combat encounters appropriately by adding and extra critter or two in 4E. The downside to this is that we have to strain a bit to explain why characters are showing up and leaving willy-nilly. But it may be a price we're willing to pay to let everyone play with a character of their own.

Sounds good. I think 6 players is probably as many as I'd want to take, but things happen, and it is at least 2 weeks out if we go after King Mob's game.

The first part of Scales of War seems to be more combat-oriented, but I think there is enough room for role playing.

I'd love to have you in the game. I'll be keeping a close eye on people who are actually going to play, so hopefully we'll have a solid count of how many players we actually have.

On the Fantasy Ground front, I am looking at what is the best way to do combat. I got a huge number of really nice tokens to use for all sorts of monsters, but they are all much, much bigger than the ones that come default with FG2. Should I go ahead and start resizing them so that they are the same size as the letters (for small sizes), a little larger for Medium, double for Large and quadruple for bigger? Also, does anyone have tips for Monster creation in the tool? I started off making a Personality for each monster type, then copying the XML for those until I had the right number of NPCs. This took a while, and I recently noticed that I don't have to make 1-x copies of a type. Basically, I'd like to have a list of Monster NPCs that I can drag into various encounters.

Yes.

As to Monster creation, you just have to make one personality per monster type. When you're ready to go into combat, you drag monsters from the personality list onto the initiative tracker and they are created there. If you drag it on more than once you create more than one copy of the same monster - it names them Thug1, Thug2, and so on. Then you can drag the token from the init tracker onto the map.

Not sure if you've seen the tutorials from Xorn on Fantasy Grounds but it has a great tutorial on how to make the D&D Miniatures into tokens.

Hold on, this looks really cool. What is this? An online client for 4th edition D&D rules, or something different?

Either way, it looks really neat, and I would definately be interested, and I do nothing on Wednesday nights, so my attendance is guaranteed.

Just a quick question. I'm assuming that if you are joining a game just as a player (even if you have the full version of FGs), that it does not matter if you have any rule-set loaded. However, if it does matter, there is a new version of the rule-set for 4E FGs (V1.0.2). Will you be using this version or V 1.0.1?

I've moved up to 1.0.2, but if any players haven't it should be able to download the needed files pretty easily. I'm pretty sure the changes in version allow better Magic Items, so it is probably good to grab the latest.
