TF2 (PC) Achievements Problem!
Thursday, August 21st, 2008 - 9:52pm
Has anyone else been having trouble with TF2 Achievements? I've been playing Pyro for the last three hours and finally completed 12 Pyro challenges. So, I go to look for the Milestone 1 achievement and Flare Gun and neither are showing. Ok, I decide to reboot TF2 and now it's only showing 6 achievements completed with less than 1/4 of the total kills I had! WTF is going on and is there any way to get my stats back?
Lag used to be a lot worse back in the day. Hell, it took Jesus 3 days to respawn.

I THOUGHT i saw you log into TF2... come to Stan's where the waters warm!
There are times when Steam goes wonky for some period during the day and you're not able to use your achievment gear and stats are wacky. There's always some weirdness day or two after a big patch release. It tends to clear up after awhile.

It always gets weird around class update time because so many stats and achievement are getting tossed around. That may be the reason.
Thanks for standin' still Wanker!

I had the exact same problem when the medic achievement pack came out. I believe it was related to playing on two computers. Whenever I played on my macbook pro my achievements would get reset to however many I had on it. Then, my desktop would update to that. I think I got some of the achievements a dozen times. It was quite frustrating and I never got it working properly. I haven't been playing on my macbook lately so I'm not sure it's fixed yet. If you play on two different machines that could still be an issue.
Getting killed, though? In a way that you don't like? Suck it up, Gertrude.
all your achievements are belong to us.
There's been small patches almost everyday this week. I guess they'll have it fixed in a matter of time. At least we can still play.

Unfortunately a lot of the time the stats won't fix themselves. Mine got messed up in the other way (got credit for stuff I didn't do), some of which was never fixed. For instance my ubercharge in one life record is 16, and I've never come close to that.
Well, it didn't get fixed and ended up playing for a few more hours to get back to where I had been. I eventually unlocked the Flare Gun, which I think is rather lame, and also got the Backburner but have't used it enough to see the benefits.

I had that happen too when the Medic Achievements came out. When I complained I was told it was a possible error wth connecting to the Steam server due to high volumes. They don't you them back (in case you try to cheat). I had to go re-earn them.
Flare Gun has its uses. If you were expect a killing machine, well then yes it sucks. If you wanted something that annoys snipers and disrupts packs of enemies then this is the right gun. It's true calling is as folows:
Flare a ground enemy
Switch to Axterminator and run a them swingging!
or
Flar a sniper up high. Repeat until he stops shooting at your team (death, or starts shooting at you.)
Tell team to move while sniper is no longer a factor.
Flareguns do have more uses than just that. It's actually my favorite pyro unlock, though it does take a bit of practice to get down.
Harassing snipers is a big one. And I use it for that pretty often.
However, you can also peg a medic with it. And when it's just one medic helping a heavy hold ground the slow drain, the damage from the flare and incidental hits will kill a medic quick. You can also use it to "soften up" your targets. When they're on fire before you charge them, they tend to die much faster. (I use that on heavies quite a bit).
Another real good use for it is marking spies that are going to get away from your flamethrower.

Thanks for the tips on the flare gun. I've been getting a little better with it lately...

Edit: Damn, wrong thread.

I love me some flaregun. Even if you don't hit, it scares people. Very few people will stand there and keep firing as you shoot flares their way.
NOTE: This is not a doodle bug.

I'd even go so far as to call flare gun a psychological warfare, if you handle it properly. If you can coordinate with other players and shoot flare without being seen, it's a great disruptor of rushes. Flare a heavy far away, he starts turning around looking for pyro. Your backburner-wielding teammate can immediately rush out from around the corner and crit him.
Flare a medic, sometimes he backs up and leaves heavy undefended. Or maybe he's low on health and flare finishes him quickly.
Set a few people in a tight enemy group on fire, they start turning around and shooting, creating total mayhem among themselves and breaking a rush. (Works better on pub servers I'd say.)
Also, shooting high windows where snipers and heavies lurk (like in Goldrush) is great to scare them away. Or soften up, as has been mentioned. Once you learn to shoot with it properly for great distances, it's a great weapon for team support (as in: I set them on fire, you finish them while they scream for medic).
I'd say that flare gun is definitely my favorite unlock so far, greatly expands the possibilities you have with pyro.
You can't take the sky from me.
There's still nothing better as a pyro than seeing another pyro at a distant with the flaregun. You then proceed to whip out the shotgun and mow them down

Though, you can use that to your advantage. Say, luring them into a heavy with natasha. Then cooking them.
I love the flaregun, especially as a medic. Nothing quite as fun as watching a pyro nail the sniper that was shooting you with the flaregun.

Sure, losing shotgun to flaregun kind of sucks, but if you know the maps, you can equip one or the other as appropriate. More close quarters=shotgun, open spaces - flare gun it is.
Word of caution: when I play in tandem with my brother (he's pyro, I'm heavy) never ever go mowing him down with your shotgun, ever. Or I'll punch you in your face mask. Blood's not water, man
