So anyone else excited for the "spiritual successor" to FEAR? With Fallout getting pushed back I'm thinking this may have become a day one purchase for me. The graphics look stunning and well . . . . . MECH PILOTING SECTIONS WITH DRUNKEN MISSLES!

Also, for those that never played the original:
Let's Play: FEAR

I'm definetely looking forward to it. Despite my dissapointment with Condemned 2, Monolith are still, in my opinion, only bested by Valve in terms of FPS titles.
I do think it's falling under the radar, though. For starters, they have a tough time trying to market a F.E.A.R. sequel where they can't use the name. Combine that with the fact that the original wasn't that huge of a brand on consoles, and I worry it'll get buried, especially since it's due out the same week as Fallout 3 and Gears of War 2 is the following week.

Well that's the thing, Fallout has been pushed back to the end of October, so this has jumped from "I'll get around to it" to "Hrm, day one?". I'm sure GoW2 is on alot of peoples minds, but for whatever reason I've become more interested in Project Origin. Crazy right?

I very much enjoyed FEAR, but from what I have seen of Project Origin so far, I cannot justify dropping $60 on it when so many other games are coming out at the same time.
I love the story line of FEAR, and the slow-mo abilities, but this looks like it will be picked up as a 2nd hand copy for me.

"I may be out of ammo but I ain't out of chainsaw B*TCHES!" - Sinister's warcry for Gears of War
I'm really looking forward to it.
I think it's coming out the same day as Far Cry 2, though, which presents a bit of a dilemma. I'm looking at the PC version of both games, so my decision may come down to which one has the more modest system requirements.

You know, looking at those screenshots, I'm struck by how much Monolith's architecture always looks like it was exported straight from AutoCAD. I don't know if it's the bland textures or all the straight lines, but it gives me the feeling of "Here's our prototype of how the place will be laid out once we build it."

Definitely looking forward to it

Actually, that's gotten me thinking. I realise it's a new team/protagonist but are any of the characters from FEAR going to be in it (even as ghosts like the bald chap who pops up every now and again - sans eyes)?
Are they even allowed to use any characters from FEAR 1?
I'm just curious since they were all essentially killed off in extremely stupid and pointless "quick lets hit the reset button so that we can get away with not being able to use the characters in FEAR2" kind of a way.

Yes, that's why Alma is back. They can't use the name, but everything else is free for Monolith to use.

well...yes that was pretty much a given
Also I believe they mention whatsherface CEO (who only appeared as voice in the opening and closing cutscenes) as being central to the plot.
I was wondering more about the FEAR team itself - whether they would bother referencing them or just putting them to one side, as the way they killed them off in the non-monolith expansion really grated and it would be nice to have some sort of "official canon" explanation as to what's happening with them for real. Or maybe that's a bit too geeky
3DS: 4983-4918-2993 | Backloggery : stevenmack -> Feel free to leeeloo daallas multitap
Neither of the expansions were made by Monolith, and they've already stated that nothing that happened in them counts as far as they are concerned.

As it should be.
....although they can pretend Norton Mapes got chewed up by something nasty - I won't hold that one against them

Delayed until 2009.
Yeah, on one hand I'm pissed because this game is one of my most anticipated.
On the other, hype for it was pretty low, and I could see it getting buried underneath the ridiculous amount of releases, and releasing during the spring might do better for it's numbers (or maybe not, who knows).
I mean, it's not like having a lack of games I'm really excited to play over the next three months is my biggest concern right now.

Exactly. This seems like a good thing for them. And for me, since I now won't have to choose between Project Origin and Far Cry 2.

Agreed and I found the environments in F.E.A.R. to be extremely repetitive after the first few levels. I'm hoping they open things up a bit and venture into new territory outside of office buildings and warehouses.

Yeah, thre'll be more than enough to keep me occupied for the next few months
They can take all the time they need as far as I'm concerned.

You know what? I kinda felt like this game was never coming out in 2008... it just didn't seem real. I was always going to buy the game but it felt like it wasn't coming out any time soon.

Watch some of the GT footage, there are definately some more open free-roaming areas and some nice changes in scenery.
As for it being delayed, I guess it kind of explains the absense of hype surrounding this game. If they really intended to release it in the coming month you'd expect more pressers and media events. Oh well, there's more than enough coming out in the next 2 months to keep me busy.

This is my primary complaint about the first game. I felt like 90% of the game took place in the same office building. Other than that, I really enjoyed it.
If they vary the environments (and the initial screens/vids back this up a bit), then I'm really looking forward to Origin.

I remember reading a developer blog about this game that provided an interesting explanation for adding health packs back into the game.
Apparently they first designed it with regenerating health, but they found that it slowed down the game pacing as play testers would huddle to regain their health and also reduced the tension. They decided to remove the regeneration feature and went back to health boosters because it heightened the level of tension in the game. Ultimately I guess it is a form of resource management.
I'm looking forward to this one, but I'm on spending lockdown.
(except for one february release.) I picked up Fear Files on the cheap a while back and I should play (slog?) through that first.
I wouldn't be too concerned with playing that first (or at really). FEAR 2 in fact completely contradicts what happens in those games anyways storywise, since Monolith doesn'taccept those as part of the series, so it's not like you'll lose out on what's going on.

That's good to know. Thanks
I played F.E.A.R.
I think there's no way on earth I can go back to an "Alma" game, she haunted my sleep for months.

Just finished playing the PC demo, I get the distinct impression that Monolith have learnt a lot from making the Condemned games, the shooting feels great, the game looks gorgeous and the general creepiness of the environments has gone up several notches, I'm glad they released a demo, as this is a game I wasn't really thinking about (got Dragon Age fever), but now I think I'll have to go pick it up.
Good news for you, the impression I get from the demo is that they are playing up the Alma thing even more in 2.

I am excited to play the demo but fear that my I will soil my frilly panties. I don't deal well with scary games. Hell, I get goosebumps whenever Swiper tries to steal things from Dora. He's so sly!

Seriously now, the experience is quite different. Here we have zombies moaning and screaming, you have a kickass shotgun and 3 buddies to cover your back. On F.E.A.R., on your second mission the devs let you know that all your gunpower is useless against Alma. Add to that creepy static noise, whispering voices in your head, flickering lights, etc etc. F.E.A.R. should have warnings for people with heart conditions, while L4D for me is like a walk in the park, it is scary, yes, but not terrorific.

Downloaded the Demo. I got to say I am more than a bit impressed from what I played. I really dig it, and it just went on my, OK, I might buy this list. Too bad everyone is going to forget FEAR 2 in the midst of Street Fighter IV and Killzone 2. At least on consoles.

Yeah, as I realize I already said months ago in this thread, Monolith are probably one of my Top 5 favorite developers. I'm not even trying out the demo so that I can go in with as fresh an experience as possible.
I wish making FPS titles that weren't dark and gritty could be seen as financially viable though. While Monolith has done a fantastic job of freaking me out, I would kill for a game like No One Lives Forever on a modern system.
