Clonk (fun casual game)
A German developer team created a game called Clonk in 1994. They continued developing the franchise, releasing new games based on the design while making the old games available as freeware. Their current game is Clonk Rage which is shareware but the latest freeware title is Clonk Endeavour. (The games and web site are available in English)
I really like the game and my brother absolutely loves it so I thought they might be of interest to this community. The graphics are quite simple but considering the Dwarf Fortress love around here that shouldn't be a problem. They support up to four players on one computer and even more on a network.
I can't really describe the game play but I suggest trying it.

Thanks for the link, Andy. I'd never heard of the game before, and was surprised to find such a thoroughly fleshed-out game with a large worldwide following.
It looks really interesting. Kind of a 2D RTS that focuses on resource gathering and construction, at least from what I've seen so far. There's a nice gameplay video up on their site showing off the massive variety of content.
Everything can be debated, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's debatable.

I don't know why but those screen shots made me very nostalgic for Solar Jet Man.
Clonk does look like an interesting game.
Great little game, I installed the "rage" edition. It has a pretty decent "trial mode". It takes some getting used to. I'd recommend using the arrow keys +mouse to control it. It says up to 4 people playing on ONE KEYBOARD... that would be just stupid hectic. Not to mention you'd have to be extremely close to everyone.
Just a tip for everyone... It rains... and rains fill up holes... and eventually water underground will freeze... if you're swimming in this water when it freezes you will be trapped under the ice. The rage edition has you able to climb up walls so its easier to not freeze in a pool of water... But the free "endeavor" version you can't climb... not that I could tell. Oh, and you can dig out ice from the frozen water underground, so that when it melts it doesn't fill up holes...

Clonks can climb in Endeavour but they need a specific rank. You need to level up your Clonk a bit before it can climb walls and eventually along ceilings.
(If you haven't noticed already, your Clonks have abilities like climbing, fighting and swimming that can get better. I don't know if they increase with usage or level, though)

I just watched the video on the site and it looks pretty awesome. It kind of brings to mind Dwarf Fortress with better graphics, but maybe not as complex. Is that a fair comparison?

Ohhhh... yeah that could be why. 99% of my Clonks die a horrible fiery death trying to throw flint in the gold mine...

Well, you can compare it to Dwarf Fortress but the games aren't really that similar. You have to gather resources and construct buildings but the means to acquire the resources are quite different, for example. Clonks relies a bit on jump 'n' run mechanics.
In Clonk there are several resources: flints, stone, gold, sulfur, coal, iron, loam, crystal...
So the first thing you do is dig out some flints (stones that explode on impact). Then you start digging for gold which is mostly found in solid clusters that you have to break by throwing a flint at them. Then you can take the gold to your base and use it to buy stuff. You probably want to build stuff so you'll use it to buy a tool set(?) which allows you to place a building. So you take that to the place you want to build and start the construction. The first building you need is probably a windmill which provides power to other buildings. You need stone and logs for that, so you buy logs and dig out some stone to complete it. Next, you build a sawmill which allows you to turn cut down trees into logs and connect it to the windmill. There are quite a lot of buildings. You can build an elevator that makes mining a little bit easier since intelligently digging tunnels can be quite difficult in itself. A workshop is quite important because it lets you construct vehicles like a submarine, a balloon, an airship or even war machines like catapults and mortars. There's a pump that lets you pump dry flooded tunnels or oil reserves. There's even a wizard tower which lets you cast spells using crystal power.
There are several scenarios with different goals to achieve. You have to kill all the monsters on a map or collect all the gold nuggets / treasures available, for example, which can be quite a difficult task depending on the terrain.
Playing against a human mostly means that you have to kill the opponent's Clonks to win.
The game can be heavily modified since there's a scripting language and a lot of player made extensions and mods are available.

Erm... a Clonk needs to be hit by several flints to die, right? When a wounded Clonk returns to your base (with a flag) it is healed completely. It may, however, cost some gold depending on his health.

I have to admit defeat on this game. It so looks like something I'd love. But why can't I get my guy to climb? Why can't I make him dig a freaking tunnel that he can walk out of? Why the hell does he always dig a hole into the water in a place that makes him get stuck and drown? I even tried the simplest level (mine all the gold) and I always either get stuck at the bottom of a well, or I drown. EVERYTIME! Anyone have some pointers that won't make me feel like a moron when I start?

Yes, Indeed... but that all boils down to me being lazy and not wanting to make the trip back up to heal.
@painthappens
Are you playing endeavor? Apparently you have to level your guys up to be able to climb... as far as digging goes, try starting at one side of the map and digging diagonally towards where you actually want to go.

I couldn't find a good tutorial on the net although the game itself should have some tutorials. Digging tunnel networks that your Clonks can walk out of requires quite a bit of practice, I'm afraid. You could build (or modify the scenario so that you start with) an elevator that goes all the way to the bottom to alleviate the problem a bit, or a pump to get rid of the water. You can also use lumps of loam and stone to build a ramp to walk on. Moreover, hitting the dig button again while your Clonk is digging should leave behind a lump of dirt(?) which you can throw to fill up a hole.
