August 31st. See? This is how little people care about it! The first game was so great, too...
I just can't help but feel like this one is really muddled. The hijacking minigames don't sound fun at all, the development of your own company sounds a LOT more linear than you'd hope, and it feels like they've simply lost their focus. Remember when dynamic fire was supposed to be the big awesome feature? So important they PUT IT IN THE DAMN SUBTITLE? Then they just cut it out almost entirely. They even took out the lighter you were supposed to use to start these amazing fires. The character design still sucks, too.
Of course none of that matters as long as it's as good as the first one.
Anyone know if it's splitscreen co-op also, or just online co-op?
I would love splitscreen but I doubt it will be in there. It seems like open world games just require too much CPU / RAM to be able to render the world from two different views. At least that is how they explained the lack of it in Crackdown.
baggachipz: Who cares about Japan, let them have their silly pointless dog games and countless re-hashes of anime-based dragon princess super lucky crapitty crap.

Well, it would seem that way but I would also ask... where are the developers or the publisher? I would think that they might want to let people know that their game is coming out. It's not like this is new IP, first was awesome and so I would expect them to make some announcement, to get the fans excited.
Seriously, I like the first game and I look forward to the sequel... I also visit a lot of gaming news sites and I honestly didn't know that this game is coming out... especially this soon. I know the game was shown at E3, but, I was under the impression that the game is still TBA release.
Looks like Mercs 1 with a Just Cause grappling hook (+1), online coop (+1), quicktime event vehicle jacking (-1), and better physics for the vehicles (+1). Sold.

Looks like it'll be fun. I'll probably be in for the co-op. Is it weird that I'm thrilled that there's 2 player co-op in this, but disappointed in Too Human for only having 2 player co-op?
Still really looking forward to this but between picking up The Orange Box on 360 last week so I can replay through all the HL2 content, having a hankering to play through Dead Rising again and barely scratching the surface on the many downloadable games i've bought in the last month (still waiting on Castle Crashers for next week) I feel like I can wait on this for a bit. Online co-op is nice, but, like in Crackdown, I don't see myself realistically using it too often because I find this to be much more of a single-player experience for me. I'm wondering how the differences will stack up between the PS3 and 360 versions. Given that i'm not so hot on co-op, I could go either way.

Go ahead and save your money then. With October looking like it does, this winter's gonna be mighty cold for a lot of us.
That's good enough reasoning to wait, Asz, but I found that Crackdown felt like two people playing a singleplayer game where the original Mercenaries felt like one person playing a two player game. There were lots of vehicles with secondary functions you couldn't take advantage of without jumping out of the driver's seat, and situations where a two-pronged approach or buddy waiting to airlift would have been spectacular.

My co-worker said you can use a helicopter to pick up a tank with one player in the chopper and the other in the tank. He thought it'd be fun to make it like a flying tank.

Seconded. Although I will say that I was "intrigued" by this but not "amped" for it. However, I am a sucker for Online Co-Op that features violence and explosions (see: GTA IV) so let's rock and roll.

I could definitely see that point. Does anyone know how does Mercs 2 handles co-op? Is it jump-in/jump-out?

I just finished replaying the original Mercenaries to prep for this, and can't believe how much fun was in it for under $10 used (on the XBox; the inferior PS2 version is inexplicably much more expensive).
You need cheat codes for the near-impossible final mission, but the thirty hours leading up to it have a nice difficulty curve; when you die (which is often enough to make victory rewarding, but not enough to be frustrating), it's usually because you're not using clever tactics to fulfill your mission. (As a side note, there are cheat codes for unlimited health and ammo; but if you just need a little help and don't want to go that far you can use codes to unlock overpowered weapons or load up more money for additional airstrikes. I usually avoid cheat codes but I liked their implementation here.) Dork bonus: I was delighted to discover that Jennifer Hale voices Jennifer Mui, the female mercenary. I could listen to her read the phonebook, if she does it with a "sexy British superspy" affect.
I'm a little hesitant that the character design seems rather more Mountain-Dew-chugging-eXtreme this time around, and the story a bit sillier. That could be bad. It could also be good, in a Die Hard kind of way, especially if you prefer the "one man army" to the "stealth" approach. This game must be great for the kind of people who play Grand Theft Auto and immediately use a code to get a rocket launcher; but I'm not that kind of person, and I really got off on figuring out how to complete each mission with minimal conflict.
The GameStop preorder bonus seems pretty ace, and that's what sold me on getting it Day One instead of waiting.

I think the above setup was achievable in Battlefield Vietnam (or maybe a mod for it), and it was hilarity.

That's just Mattias. The other two mercenaries are much more subdued. On the other hand there is a motorcycle with a tank track instead of wheels, which is pretty extreme.
The first game had a cheat where you could get equipment drops for free (basically you'd throw the marker and switch to another weapon before it hit the ground). I think it might've worked with some of the airstrikes too. That... helped.

Game's rated Teen. Just throwin' that out there.
Well, i'm not just in this for strippers or anything. The run-and-gun in the first one was a blast, although I could live without the quicktime events. They've promised me I can still rain down Cruise-missile based destruction wherever I so please, and that's enough for me. I do wonder about how the vehicles are going to handle though, in the first I found them to be worthless against anything other than other vehicles, but maybe...

Yea, but with another cheat to deposit an additional $1mil in your account...
Maybe it was just how I approached the game, but I didn't feel the need to cheat until the last mission, and by then I'd banked close to $9mil legitimately. Lots of stealthing around, sneaking right past the defenses with a North Korean helicopter...
