Odd Impulses...
Wednesday, August 13th, 2008 - 12:51pm
So last night I'm having trouble sleeping, so after trying to read and still not being able to sleep, I get an odd impulse...
I needed, HAD to, at that moment, watch Batman: The Animated Series!
I dunno WHY this urge came over me, but I watched some great episodes from the fourth volume, including "Never Fear" and "Mad Love."
After that, I felt satisfied, went back to bed, and with some help (a lovely iPhone app called "aSleep"), I fell asleep just fine. Weird, huh? Any of y'all get odd impulses like that?
Anyway, hope y'all are having a delightful day!

I get that, but with Stardust. Must be the thing I have for Claire Danes.

I get impulses to open the fridge ALL THE TIME. I will be putting away dinner dishes, complaining of how stuffed I am, and then I'll wander to the fridge. It gets even worse when my roommate is watching the food network. Or if I am bored. Or upset. O really happy... you get the idea.
Also, sometimes I just can't help but want to bite someone while I am talking to them. Not because I am angry, just because. I am pretty good at holding back on that until we are close friends, and I rarely do it in public. See ya guys at GenCon!

You ever get a song stuck in your head? I had the Free Credit Report pirate song in my head for 3 days running. I couldn't make it stop. It was driving me crazy(er).

At least your odd impulses are harmless. Mine usually involve me doing something with a small chance of success and a high chance of serious injury. But if I do pull it off it will be awesome.
I usually can talk myself out of it knowing full well that this is an idiotic idea but one day I'll prolly end up in the Darwin Awards.
I used to get what I called "Socially Unacceptable" impulses.
I was sitting in a friend's office when his phone rang. While he was talking, I had the almost uncontrollable urge to reach across the desk and hit the button to hang up the phone. Not because I wanted him to get off of it, just because.
Another time, when I was in my grade 11 Physics class, my teacher was leaning on the desk in front of me, which was unoccupied. I barely repressed the urge to "nudge" the desk, just to shake him up a bit. Not maliciously, I quite liked him as a teacher.

Speaking of insomnia, playing three hours of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. then reading House of Leaves for an hour and a half is definitely not conducive to quality sleep.

Mine's more of a habit than an impulse, but for some reason I carry around the last napkin I used from a meal for hours afterward (provided it's a paper napkin). I don't even realize I'm doing it half the time. I'll look down and realize I have a folded napkin tucked in the crook of my palm and remember that I had lunch over an hour ago.
Weird.
This song gets me consistently. If I don't change the channel immediately I'll have it in my head as I'm trying to sleep. It's the only song that gets me every time.

I waggle the stick shift in my car from side to side multiple times whenever I shift out of gear. It started as a simple way of making sure it was definitely out of gear with one simple wobble to one side, and it sort of grew from there.
I also tap the button on the e-brake whenever I'm sitting at a stop light.
I don't generally even notice that I do it. I never even caught myself tapping the button on the brake handle until someone asked me why I did it.

A friend of mine in college did this all the time.
I have an automatic and often rest my hand on the gearshift and push the button in and out, but never far enough to engage it.

I learned to drive on a '69 VW Beetle. My mom used to waggle the shifter too, and I picked up that habbit. I also click the break release button in and out.

On one forum recently (I've looked but can't find the posts) someone typed: It's unxpliceble!
Later in the thread someone else quoted him and wrote: I hate to correct people but your spelling is really bad it should be: It's unexplicable.
I get the urge to buy books from Amazon all the time after hearing them being recommended on TV or podcasts. Thank heavens for wish lists. I can put my potential purchases there until the urge to buy them fades.

I click the e-brake button in my car too, except I also do it when moving. It makes my wife nervous because she thinks I'm about to pull the e-brake and do a powerslide. So far I've contained that impulse.

MY GOD!! We need to send help/escape packages to Wordy ASAP! Or at least some germolene or savlon or something for the injuries!
I have to agree! My brain almost exploded reading that.... he's just lucky it's a piss-take otherwise he'd really be in trouble!
Sometimes i have impulses to do stuff. Sometimes it's harmless like wanting to 're-experience' good times from my past by re-using some of the neurons from those times... e.g. wanting to watch movies that remind me of certain points in my life (Groundhog Day) or certain songs.... or certain foods.
Other times i have urges to do stuff (non-sexual stuff i mean)... like seeing what it would feel like to punch that person who's annoying me in the street in the face.... or attack those teenage punks on the corner because they're public nuisances... generally not very often. But i do get the urge to kill people i think are detrimental to society: those people who consider themselves and their menial lives more important than the rest of humanity... 'Why should they let you out into traffic?', 'Why should they care whether you're robbed or not?', 'Why should they care if they keep you awake all night?'....
The answer is that if we lower ourselves to that level of thought society breaks down. There has to be a certain amount of respect for other people otherwise the whole she-bang doesn't work... humans are a societal species and without the benefits that go along with that then society doesn't work.... humans don't work and it devolves to a point where the strongest get what they want and no one else does.... Well, my friends, i'm stronger than you and i'll show you what happens when you get what you wish for....
Oh, wait.... er.... disregard everything after 'foods'.

Sorry, I tend to only get sleep-depriving impulses when something is wrong. I don't have any OCD or anxiety, but I can count twice where I was lying in bed wide awake, knowing there was only one thing I could do to put my mind at ease. *marches to his computer with his pants down*
Lol j/k. I made a funny see?
Video games can do that to me. I'll lie in bed and something will come back to me. A boss I couldn't beat or puzzle that defeated me, and I'll know how to beat it. I can't sleep until I do. That count?

I click a lot while I'm reading something on the Internet. It probably has something to do with the fact that I have an incredibly hard time sitting still. If I move my legs while sitting down it bothers my GF so she's learned to deal with the clicking of the mouse. Usually it's the right mouse button so I bring up the menu. If I'm showing someone something on the internet I'll pretend I did it by accident as I can't ... not ... click!

I get weird destructive/self-destructive impulses that I have, thus far, managed to resist. Wanting to crush a drinking glass, jump through a window bizarre things like that.

I also regularly get the urge to climb back up to my third-floor apartment instead of taking those boring old stairs, especially when drunk. It looks like it'd be *just* doable.
"The trouble with fighting for human freedom is that one spends most of one's time defending scoundrels. For it is against scoundrels that oppressive laws are first aimed, and oppression must be stopped at the beginning if it is to be stopped at all."
I had a friend who used to climb public buildings when we had been out drinking, often going up as much as 6 or 7 floors. Once he found an open window in the City Hall and went inside and played with the computers and moved stuff around.
I wouldn't recommend it though, he was an awesome climber.

At college, a buddy and I went through a phase like this. Alcohol was pretty much always involved. Mostly the 2-5 AM time period as well. We climbed a lot of buildings, and invaded many labs and rooves. Many of the buildings at this particular (large and well known) campus were quite old and had lots of grooves and crannies to use as handholds.
It was fun, but damn we were so dumb.
"I have not supped of Buffy, nor have I supped in any wise during the absence of Firefly. When Firefly returns again in glory, then shall I sup at the table of Whedon." - Fedaykin98
My roommate and I did the same thing. He was a rock climber and he kind of taught me also. We would scale the campus buildings and leave flags, banners, other stupid things.
The students kind of got a kick out of it. Maintenance hated us since they had to take it down
After a while people kind of figured out it was us, maybe it was all the rock climbing gear in our room and someone seeing us make that banner that was up the next morning.
Fortunately most of the security was students and friends. Who would turn a blind eye to us. They would casually bring up the times and locations they would do their rounds so that they could always just miss us.
Although one of my friends decided to prank the pranksters a bit and "caught" us one night. He came out with a light and a microphone with a voice modulator.
I was scared, with a big scary voice and a blinding light in your face, who wouldn't be. I was thinking “Aww man, I just got expelled”. Then my friend said "Man, that’s a big bird and walked away."
He shined the light on me from down below and shouted "Freeze".
Again, fun but stupid. Yup just Stupid fun. The best kind
During my four years in college, I peed on every campus building. I crossed them off on a map when I got home from drinking.
So that's similar.
