AoC - Open PvP?

Intern

I was looking for a new MMO to play, and I don't think I understand something quite right about AoC: is it Open PvP?

I ask this because I started MMO gaming way back in the day with UO and EQ, and I remember Open PvP. Being griefed, and even extorted by higher level players under threat of constant PKing ran rampant, and in some games, like Lineage II, such extortion rackets have even been tied to Korean mafia.

Hell, I even remember starting WoW about two months after launch and being killed 5 times in five minutes when I was around level 20 by level 60's, many of whom dotted me once then just followed me to watch me die.

I just don't want to buy a game I know I'm going to uninstall and cancel my subscription in a week out of frustration from player harassment when I'm just trying to have a good time.

There are both PvE and open PvP servers. Both have the option of pvp in a controlled environment as well.

The pvp servers will not be your cup of tea.

I love it and would never switch but it sounds like you would hate it.

Currently there isn't anything to stop a L80 from camping lowbies on a PvP server. Right now on the test server they have the new "Notoriety" system, where you can become flagged as a Murderer from killing too many people that are below your level. No doubt it'll be patched onto the live servers and be another buggy mess, where you can reverse grief a high level player with a low level character by jumping into the range of AoE attacks (almost all attacks, melee and magic, are AoE).

Should be fun

You reminded me of why my wife quit pvp'ing for a long time. We were playing UO in the pre-trammel days, and a gang of pk's killed the two of us. After dismembering my body, they put on my wife's dress and started running around in it. I was laughing my ass off, but she took it as a personal insult. She was beyond pissed. That was the end of her pvp'ing for several years.

Hey, I'm all for consensual PvP, I really am. I'd like to flag myself for combat, run out into a battlefield, and jump into the fray. I'm not so big on being murdered while walking down the street. I never did understand the joy of slaughtering other players who want nothing to do with it. Like town killing in Diablo, or back in Everquest when someone would kill you and get to loot you too. Oh yes, you had lots of money, and nice items, but you never carried them on you, those stayed in your bank where they were safe. Lost two Oracle robes before I figured that one out.

Ah, UO. The place where two guys PKed me then berated my dead body and OOOoOOOoOOooooO-ing ghost when they picked through my stuff and said I didn't have anything, so they rezzed me and I told them that I had just been PKed 2 minutes earlier. They went off to kill my first PKer. Ye Gods.

Well, Cooking Mama didn't help me become a better cook, and Trauma Center certainly didn't help me become a better surgeon. I have the proof of both sitting in my freezer. -- imbiginjapan

You see you made the mistake of not just having a pack full of 100 res robes and random bowls. At least that is how I rolled with my pack.

Besides, we all know that the best part about Trammel was how it was all suburbs. Flee a cave full of monsters? Run through the suburbs.

Not at all -- I had those surprise packs where there would be nothing but random crap. I should've saved my rez robes though -- that's a wonderful idea. All I needed to do at that point was find an overpass and live as a UO HOBO.
