Mac and PC games in the same box?
Friday, August 8th, 2008 - 8:13pm
Are there any games that shipped in the past 3-4 years that had both the PC and Mac versions in the same box? I seem to remember one of the games I bought having both, but for the life of me, I can't find it (and don't remember what it was).

Anything by Blizzard and some edu-tainment types of titles is all know that do the dual version on same disc thang.
World of Warcraft is definitely set up that way.....erm....only other one I can think of are most of the Myst games I think, but now that you mention it I'm sure there was another one more recently.
Curse you...that's going to bug me now

Ah! Not really a game itself per-se, but Spore Creature Creator was Pc / Mac
I thought Blizzard games were that way, but every game I've come across (in my collection) was PC only. Diablo II, Warcraft 3, Starcraft... I'll go look again. I was just looking for something to take on a business trip to pass the time in the hotel.
Edit: Ah.. Starcraft and Warcraft 3 say it on the CD. I was only looking on the case. Now, though, I wonder if it will work on OS X?
I think Blizzard may have started with D2: LoD, at least as far as the dual-format disk being the default. They may have done the same for later reprints of older games though. I can certainly vouch for WoW and War3 running fine on Mac OS X, don't have Mac versions of their other games.
Haven't seen anybody else major doing this, unfortunately. I keep hoping though, since the a lot of the content should be basically the same (i.e. the art elements shouldn't really need tweaking, the core AI/engine logic should only need recompilation; the only part that has to change a bunch is the I/O elements, and a good abstraction layer can probably insulate that away from the rest of the software).

For the older Blizzard games, you can register the serial key on the Blizzard Store, and you'll be provided with a downloadable version for MAC.

Nonsense! My original copy of Warcraft proudly states it is an "MS-DOS & Macintosh CD-ROM."
Spore: Creature Creator was both mac and pc on the same disc. I have it installed on my gaming machine and mbp. Not sure if Spore will be that way or not.
Getting killed, though? In a way that you don't like? Suck it up, Gertrude.
Some wargames come that way. There's a fantasy wargame, turn-based, that Shrapnel puts out, Dominions 3 that I think comes in both formats.

Took off and left my CD on my desk at home! Doh! Okay Internet... entertain me!
The old You Don't Know Jack games were on hybrid CDs, as well. Warcraft III was a key reason I switched to Mac. I had so man issues getting the game to run on my PC, and once I finally got all of the drivers installed, the game ran like ass. I decided it was time to upgrade, but the entire process of getting Warcraft III to run was enough for me to consider just going with a Mac, since I could just use the same CD to play it there.
Now, I had to do some research, verifying that Civ III was available. I also finally decided that my gaming would just be much easier on consoles, and I could use my Mac when it was convenient. Best decision I ever made. My gaming became 10x more enjoyable once I decided to stop worrying and learned to love the consoles.
It would not, however, annoy me if we started to see a serious trend of hybrid games. EA has committed to supporting the Mac platform (but not with hybrid disks), so I could see more publishers warming to the idea if apple continues to grow market share. That development would do the most to help Macs find a much stronger place in households.
