Looks like if anyone black goes to the gas station there is a possibility of being shot... but I guess everyone else is ok...

Are we going to pretend that the presumptive first black president of the US doesn't have a real chance of getting shot, so we can get outraged and cry race-card?

It seems like there's an unspoken, kind of assumed "running for president" after "as a black man". I can't be sure that was her intention or not.

I dunno. Seems like a stretch to call this playing the race card. Her point was that you can't make decisions based on fear, which is a very sound and strong answer to a question that I thought was really neither here nor there. I mean, aren't there more interesting questions to be asking the Obamas than that?

That was my interpretation as well. But it is entertaining to see the rush to paint her as a hysterical reverse-racist or something, because it's ludicrous to suggest that peace-loving white folk might be a threat to a black man running for president.

All I heard was someone saying that they couldn't worry about him getting shot as president where as a black man he might get shot doing even regular guy stuff like going to the gas station. You could argue that it's a stretch to claim that even well-educated, well paid black professionals are at a particularly high risk of getting shot, but I don't know what the stats are there.

It's funny that right wingers would spend decades talking about a huge crime problem in inner cities and then attack someone is racist for saying, "I can't worry about my husband being shot as president because high crime already makes our inner city neighborhoods dangerous."

What upsets me is that she uses the words "as a black man". I mean anyone going to a gas station can be shot, what just because your black you have to be extra, extra careful? Personally I do not see Obama as a black guy I see him a card carrying Commie Marxist.

But it is funny how everyone is dancing around this whole race issue, but Obama himself keeps saying Obama is black a black man. Look at the whole dollar bill speech for instance.

So yeah, essentially you do have to be extra extra careful if you're black.

Black people are disproportionately represented among victims of homicide, so they would be considered at higher risk. The risks are not equal, though both risks are pretty small.

Having shared gas stations with the man, I'll attest that anyone can get shot at the gas stations near his house--at any time, regardless of reason.

In the same neighborhoods? Or is that only speaking to the fact that statistically minorities are more likely to live in poorer areas, and those areas tend to have higher crime rates in general? Or are you perhaps arguing that black communities are inherently more violent than other ethnic groups (note that blacks lead both offenders and victims)?

Statistics can be manipulated to say alot of different things depending upon how you choose to interpret them. (Personally I more inclined to believe that higher population density generally leads to more crime, and that poor neighborhoods often have very large ratios of people to square miles, leading to the increased crime rate in those areas)

I don't have a direct source on this handy, and I'm too lazy to go dig one up unless I need to, but I'm almost certain that poor whites are a lot less likely to die of gun violence than poor blacks.

Now, there might be a deeper causative factor, since this is just a correlation, but assuming my memory is serving me correctly, it's clear that life is a lot more dangerous if you're black, and even more dangerous if you're black and male. Whether it's causative or not, it doesn't matter: having black skin correlates strongly with dying violently.

Whatever the root cause is, Mrs. Obama's fear appears justified.

Oh My Gosh!!! This is way too funny not to comment.

I saw the link and I am just wondering if she was referring to a person getting gas in the DC metro area? Isn’t that where the White House is? Isn’t that the same area that a gas station sniper was a few years back? Maybe she is thinking of her hubby getting gas in DC because that is where the president lives. Just a thought.

Oh, darn I need to go fill the car up. Be back in a bit.

Cheers,
Lone

Would you say that this is also true of "innocents." In other words, if we exclude criminals, and confine the stats only to regular people just living their lives, is it still more dangerous to be black? I don't expect that you have the answer, but it'd be interesting to know.

Both Communism and Socialism are represented at the national level of US politics by one guy, Socialist Bernie Sanders (registered as Independent, of course). The ease with which the Republican rank and file toss around these labels shows a serious misunderstanding of both stances, as well as the after-effects of the end of the Cold War. It's seriously outdated. And don't get me started on "hippy".
