Since this morning it's official: after more than a year of trying my girlfriend and me are having a baby. So far it's only 23 mm (an inch in your strange American measurements) and we don't know the sex yet. But I'm quite sure it's a future gamer.
I know for almost three weeks now and I'm still as happy as the first time I heard it. We just kept it hushed so as not to jinx it until the doctor says that everything is fine (which he did an hour ago).

Those fears don't go away. Number one is almost three years old, and the fears are still there, just different. As long as you're not ruled by them, it'll be alright. We're gearing up for number two, and they are there again. You could see the release in my wife's face when the OB discovered audible redemption with her doppler for the first time.
You are correct though. Happiness usually prevails.
